"So, adopted mom, I'm guessing?" Jaidyn asked as she leaned against a table and picked up a book. "Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but you didn't call her mom, so I assume…"
"So, adopted mom, I'm guessing?" Jaidyn asked as she leaned against a table and picked up a book. "Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but you didn't call her mom, so I assume…"
"Oh! Er…" A bit of pink rose to Lucas's cheeks. "Yeah, actually. For a few years now." Lucas suddenly became very interested in a book.
Jaidyn nodded, falling silent. "Er, sorry to bring that up. I know it can be…a difficult subject. My dad passed a few years ago too."
"Yeah… it was… difficult, to say the very least. My brother didn't take it well and acted very brashly. I wish I had been able to talk him out of it…"
Jaidyn looked up at Lucas. "What did he do, if you don't mind me asking?" She asked quietly.
"After my mother was killed, he… he went to get revenge." Lucas said quietly. "I tried so hard to talk him out of it, but Claus was always so stubborn. He never returned, and… his body was found weeks later."
Jaidyn bit her lip, looking down at her book again. "Sorry doesn't cut it, but for what it's worth, I AM sorry. You don't deserve this sorrow."
Lucas fidgeted with the pages of his book. "I'm sorry… I shouldn't be burdening you with my problems, especially so soon after meeting you."
Jaidyn shook her head with a small smile. "I specialize in problems, I'm studying to be a therapist or guidance counselor."
"Perhaps that's why you seem so approachable? I never really got that with Kiara… She just… never seemed like a mother to me. She'll never be able to fill in the hole that my true mother left."
Jaidyn nodded. "I get that. I feel the same way about my mom's new boyfriend. Then again, he's a big jerk so…yeah…"
"Kiara isn't cruel or anything. She's just…. she's just not my mother. And with Claus gone and my father distracted with everything, really I've just got Rocky." He pet the dog, sighing.
Jaidyn smiled. "Well, you'll have a lot more here. I mean, if you want. Everyone's really kind and you can literally carry a conversation with anyone. I like volunteering at the retirement home, everyone there always have the most interesting stories."
"I hope so. Perhaps you could take me there sometime?" Lucas skimmed his book absently, not taking in any of the information. His mind was muddled with memories of his mother and Claus now, and he couldn't focus.
(I gtg now, goodnight.)
"Of course!" Jaidyn replied, then fell silent, reading her book.
(Night)
Lucas eventually gave up on trying to read and just became lost in thought, staring at the same page for ages. That was so long ago… well, not so long, when I think about it. Claus and I were just nine years old at the time…
Jaidyn sighed. "Okay, why don't I take you to the animal shelter?"
"Hmm? Oh, sure." Lucas closed his book. It wasn't like he was getting much out of it anyways. "That sounds nice."
Jaidyn nodded as she stood up. "You'll love it."
(I'm so sorry for being gone! We had a tornado watch where I am and the power was out for hours)
"I hope so. Wonder if dad and Kiara will let me get another dog?" Lucas put his book back on the shelf.
(Oh, that's okay)
Jaidyn chuckled softy. "If not, the shelter is less than a block from your house." She said as she started out of the library, waving the librarian, Ms Gianna, goodbye.
"True. Maybe I can volunteer there or something? That'd be a job I would enjoy. I sort of have a thing with animals… it's almost like I can talk to them."
"Same! I prefer to be around animals, cause they just…..I don't know…..get me I guess?"
Lucas nodded, petting Rocky's head as they walked. "Animals don't really judge you the way people do. They're loving always, and loyal. You can count on them in a way that you could never count on people…"
Jaidyn nodded. "I agree with that statement." She said, rubbing Tucker's head too. "I rescued Tucker when he was just a puppy, and now look at him. It's amazing how he went from being half-dead to his healthy self now."
