"So what about you? What do you do as a hobby?" asked Silver, feeling his vision clear a little as he focused on Aurelius' face.
"So what about you? What do you do as a hobby?" asked Silver, feeling his vision clear a little as he focused on Aurelius' face.
The question caught him off-guard, even though it shouldn't have.
"Me? Well… I'm more of an academic, I guess. I read anything I can get my hands on. I also do a bit of research here and there, mostly on wildlife and magical creatures. I'm not great at it, but it is fascinating. I'm also trying to finish some of the work my mother left behind. She was a fiction writer, you see, and after she died, some of her books were left unfinished. I'm not sure where to go with some of it, but I'm trying. I'll finish it someday."
"Magical creatures huh?" asked Silver, "Ever study wolves before?"
"Not personally. I've read things, but that's not research I've done myself. My main focus has usually been draconic species," Aurelius explained, "Honestly, dragons are adorable…"
A small smile spread over his face.
"Try wolf pups" said Silver, "Now those are cute! fluffy, clumsy, and generally adorable"
“No kidding,” Aurelius laughed.
He started to look Silver over with worried eyes.
“You seem slightly better off now. How are you feeling?”
"Tired….." replied Silver, "But seriously, "I already told you I'll be fine….."
“I know, I know. I’m just trying to make sure you don’t go unconscious if I can do anything to help it,” Aurelius replied.
"I think we're mostly past that…." said Silver quietly, "Though I don't think I could stand no matter how much I wanted to…."
“Alright, then we’ll stay here a bit longer,” Aurelius said, “Or I could try- emphasis on the word try- to help you back now.”
"Either one is fine, though I wouldn't mind staying out here with you" said Silver with a slight smirk.
“Oh, of course not,” Aurelius laughed nervously, “I quite like your company, too, you know.”
Weird. Usually once people see my powers, they run the other way. And he saw me lose control of them, but here he is.
Aurelius realized he was really tired, too. He could probably stand and also walk back to camp if he tried, but it would’ve taken a lot.
Silver smiled, watching him somewhat mischievously. "So I'm going to guess niether of us is in good enough shape to try and get both of us back?"
“You guessed right,” Aurelius replied, “I could go back on my own, but uh… I highly doubt I would physically be able to bring you with me.”
As of right now, there were just over 100 pounds on his 5’7 frame- barely enough to support him alone.
"Oh well," said Silver, "We can hang out here, for just as looong as we need."
“Yeah. Seriously though, I’m more than happy to stay here with you all the while.”
His smile was very slight and fragile, but a smile nonetheless.
(I’ll be back in a few hours)
"Thanks Aurelius….. I'm just glad I was able to help….."
Aurelius' gaze was a little unsteady and sad.
"Yeah… um… like I said, no one's ever been able to do that for me before. Even Septima and Taurin. They've tried, but both have ended up hurt because of it. Usually I have to wait it out alone somewhere until I use every ounce of power I have, or until I manage to calm down. I'm really grateful."
"I'm just glad I could hold out for you," said Silver, " 'specially since I don't normally use my ice abilities…."
Aurelius' lip quivered a little bit. He was about to apologize again, but he was sure that was the last thing Silver wanted to hear.
"I'm glad you're okay. Anyone else could've been seriously injured by that magic."
"Technically I could've gotten hurt too…" said Silver, "I was using something called a wolf's bond, that golden aura that protected me? It wasn't mine…."
"Oh…" Aurelius said, a little disappointed, "Then I'm even more glad whatever it was protected you."
He checked his hands again to make sure magic wasn't seeping out. It seemed to be completely gone this time, despite his fears it might decide to flare back up.
"Hey…" said Silver, grabbing his arm, "You don't have to be scared for me, I just wanted to tell you, so neither of us got hurt, and so you weren't under a false illusion. I can summon that aura almost anytime I need, so don't worry about it….."
"Okay," Aurelius replied, "Thanks for telling me, though."
He laughed, but it felt ingenuine.
"And to think you haven't even seen me at my worst… I hope you never have to."
"I've witnessed the twins at their worst…." said Silver, "I don't think you could be worse…"
