Paige widened her eyes. The bell rang. "I'm going to be late," she said, but she didn't move.
Paige widened her eyes. The bell rang. "I'm going to be late," she said, but she didn't move.
"Do you like algebra that much?" he shook his head, "That's insane,"
"There are other things that I like more," Paige smiled. Then her face went deadpan and she clapped a hand over her mouth, realizing what she said, then realizing that she meant it.
Darren squinted, "So you wanna skip with me, oh and don't worry about getting in trouble, they don't notice after 1st period,"
"Skip school? With you?" Paige's eyes were a mixture of excitement and fear.
"Yeah, they never notice, they never check and I don't want to be here anymore," He smiled, "Unless you want to be here that badly, in which case I'll endure being lonely,"
"Sure. I wouldn't want you to be lonely…" Paige chided herself internally.
"Sweet," He smiled and started walking, "We have to go out the back though, my cars already parked back there,"
"Ok," Paige followed him. Her shoulders lifted. She had finally found a dominant emotion: excitement.
He turned around and walked backward while he talked to Paige, "So, this your first time? Skipping I mean,"
"Yes. I've never even considered it before," Paige replied.
"It's a great alternative to… this," He made a face as he gestured to the around him to indicate the school. He turned back around and walked with a small spring in his step, "So with your first ditch day, what do you wanna do?"
"I don't know. What do you usually do?" Paige inquired.
"Whatever I want, that's the point. Sometimes I hang out with some of my older friends, sometimes I go home and chill, or even go somewhere in town like Maggiano's or the beach or something."
"Wow… But what should we do today?"
"Well my young recruit, that is up to you," He smiled as he unlocked his car, a '69 Challenger RT that made him look like his family had too much money.
Paige admired the car and slipped into the front seat. "But I must learn from the Ditching School Master," Paige joked. "Show me your ways Mighty One."
He shook his head, "I'm no master, but I can show you a good time. What kind of things are you into?"
Dancing. "Oh, it doesn't matter," Paige said.
"Do you like music and Italian food?"
"That sounds great!" Paige enthused.
He smiled and started the car, "Then let's go," They drove awhile before stopping outside of what looked to be a classy family restaurant from the outside, but inside there were tables and low lighting over a dance floor. Darren didn't say anything when they walked in, the waitress simply sat them at a table and seemed to know Darren.
Paige brushed her hair behind her ear, revealing more of her face. "You come here often?" she asked.
"Actually, I work here," He frowned, "I'm not a like a waiter or anything," He said it like there was a problem with being a waiter.
"Oh. What do you do then?" Paige asked.
