"Uh…" she faltered greatly. You're screwed. Go away, now!
"Sorry… I didn't want you to be uncomfortable…"
"No, it's… it's fine…" GO!
"Okay… Do you come to the beach often?"
"Every day," she replied, making sure to keep her tail out of sight.
"Wow, impressive," he joked playfully. "Maybe we should go boating or something sometime? I have a boat but I just moved here and haven't gotten the chance to bring it out,"
"Oh, um, I don't know…"
“You can’t tell me you’re afraid of the water. You dove in to save me and you come here every day,”
"I'm not," she said quickly, holding back a laugh. A mermaid afraid of water.
*Maybe it's me? Maybe it's me she doesn't want to be around. That explains why she's uncomfortable, "Anyways… Sorry to bother you but I at least owe you dinner or something… You saved my life,"
"Um, I'm not sure that would work…" She bit her lip. He was a really sweet guy. She hated to have to do this to him.
"O-Oh… Uhh," Shot down… turned down… it hurts… "It doesn't have to be like a date or anything just a thank you dinner… It's fine I'm sorry,"
"No! Oh, I'm sorry. I made that sound completely the wrong way. I'd love to do it. I really, really would, but, um…"
"It's okay I get it… I should probably get going then. I have a– I have to– I wouldn't want to be late for uhh… Work," he said finally. It was his best on the spot excuse.
"I'm a mermaid!" she exclaimed, unable to contain it any longer. Her tail flicked into his view.
"What?" He glanced at her tail and laughed, "Yeah… Okay," he said sarcastically.
She blinked in shock. "You… You don't believe me?"
"Mermaids… mermaids aren't real… It's ancient legend from the Siren in folklore… what is that?" He looked at her tail, "What is it… made out of?"
"Scales… It's real," she insisted.
"Really fake," he joked under his breath… "Can I touch it?" he asked a little louder.
Hesitantly, she nodded.
He ran his fingers along the scales and let out a nervous laugh, "What the hell?"
"It's real," she whispered.
“It’s magnificent. What kind of science? Were you born this way?”
"Very, I have no idea, and yes," she responded simply.
