Bucky nodded a little. "Yeah. I…I'm sorry." He said quietly, looking at Steve with uncertain, cautious eyes.
Bucky nodded a little. "Yeah. I…I'm sorry." He said quietly, looking at Steve with uncertain, cautious eyes.
"No, don't be sorry," Steve told him, speaking softly as he shook his head, "It's alright, it is. You're safe, and I'm here." He let out a quiet sigh, silently taking his hand as he glanced back to his bed, "You can come stay with me, if it'll help you sleep."
Bucky nodded again. "Alright. Thank you." he said softly, lacing his fingers with Steve's and taking in a breath.
Steve nodded in reply, half asleep but still watchful of Bucky's unstable state. "Okay, okay," He quietly replied, biting his lip and wondering if he'd be alright with sleeping on a mattress as he slowly led him back to the bed.
Bucky followed him quietly, holding onto Steve's hand. He glanced at the bed for a moment, eyes flickering over to Steve.
Steve sighed as he neared the bed, meeting Bucky's gaze as he turned to face him. All he could think about was what how different— how frightened he looked, now that he was fighting with whatever horrific memories had found their way into his sleep.
Bucky's blue eyes were hooded and haunted, and he didn't speak, merely looked at Steve quietly.
"Bucky," Steve said, leaning on the edge of the bed and still holding his hand. The man before him was so distant to the man from earlier that night, heavy gazed and slightly trembling from the shock of his dreams. "You gonna be okay with sleeping on a bed? Tell me what you need, please."
"I…" he swallowed faintly. "I don't…" he took a deep breath. "I don't know." he finally said quietly, eyes skittering away to look down at the floor, rather than meet Steve's eyes.
"Bucky," Steve said, softening his tone as he tried to meet his troubled gaze, "It's okay. All I want is for you to be alright." He gave his hand a reassuring squeeze after a quiet moment, wishing he knew what Bucky really needed, "We can talk about it tomorrow, but for now, would it be better if we slept in your room?"
Bucky shrugged his shoulders helplessly. "I don't know." he said again, closing his eyes and trying to calm down, trying to stop being so scared.
Steve reached for Bucky's hands, slowly and almost cautiously pulling him into a hug. "It's okay, Everything's okay." He repeated, running a gentle hand through his long hair and holding him close, "You're safe; you can go back to sleep. Let's go back to sleep."
Bucky leaned into Steve, letting out a slightly shaky breath. He wrapped his arms around Steve, holding onto him desperately.
"You're okay," Steve quietly told him, sighing as he combed a hand through his hair. He couldn't imagine how painful the memories were for him to just about collapse in his arms, and a part of him thought this might be a dream as he softly spoke to him, "Just breathe, I'm right here."
He was trembling slightly, clinging to Steve and closing his eyes tightly. "S-steve…" he stammered faintly.
"Ssh, it's alright," Steve quietly replied, holding him close as they stood in the dim light of his bedroom, "You're safe, and everything's okay. Let's go back to sleep."
Bucky's breathing shuddered faintly as he stayed close to Steve, holding onto the blonde with a desperate grip.
Steve ran a gentle hand through Bucky's hair as he spoke, his eyebrows softly pulled together as he thought of his own sleeping troubles after the war. "C'mon, Steve said, barely a whisper, "It'll be okay. You're safe, and I'm here with you." He had his own share of painful memories that haunted him, but seeing how severe it was for Bucky was something he hated to see.
Bucky hid his face in Steve's shoulder, taking another shaky breath. "Sorry." He said faintly. "I-I…"
"It's okay," Steve softly reassured him, wishing he had better words to console him. "Really. I know it's hard, Bucky, I know. But it was just a dream," He said, knowing that these dreams were just as painful as the memory, "–And you're safe, see? You're with me, and nothing's gonna hurt you."
Bucky swallowed faintly. "I-I know. I just…" he kept his face hidden in Steve's shoulder.
"What is it?" Steve quietly asked, silently remembering that twitching look in Bucky's eyes when they were on that SHIELD helicarrier; betrayed by his own memories in a fleeting moment of doubt towards what he knew and what he saw.
(smol heads up: gonna be gone for a few days on another lil trip :)
(it's fine! Have fun! :)
He shook his head a little, closing his eyes. "I…I can't. Steve, I…" he curled closer to Steve, pressed into the blonde like a scared child.
"Hey, it's okay," Steve softly replied, combing a gentle hand through Bucky's hair as he held him, "You've had a rough night, and we don't have to talk about it right now if you don't want to. But you're safe, I promise, and we can go back to sleep."
