"Well, at least you for sure aren't the weakest link… we're all a bit pathetic right now. I mean, the goth seven year old has a concussion or something, doesn't he? 'Mori', isn't that what you call him? And at least half of us are injured…" Kas sighed softly in exasperation.
"Yeah, that’s his name. And he does. And I mean… I could use the rest myself. Those zombies tore the shit out of my arms yesterday, and my back is still really sore from the glass shards," Tohru admitted, "There's hardly anyone who isn't recovering from something."
(Levi: is relatively okay)
(Levi: Haha I'm in danger)
(Yep lol)
"But we can't all be resting… then no one's doing anything, and we'll die." Kas whined, clinging tighter to Tohru. "And you shouldn't have to carry me if your arms are all messed up. Not exactly good for them."
"It's just some scratches. I can carry you down one flight," Tohru insisted, "And don't worry, we can send out a small hunting party or something if we need. We can just use this old hospital as a base for now, basically."
"Mmm…" Kas hid his face again, groaning softly. "This sucks… everything just… it's all stupid and terrible and I hate it…" He buried his face in Tohru's shoulder and held tighter to him.
( @Luna_Lily just wanna make sure you can still find this ^^)
"It is," Tohru agreed, "But at least we have each other to help fight through it. Lightens the load a little."
He hauled Kas down to the end of the staircase.
"Great, great. He's up, seems to be alright. He looks not as horribly tired," Lis replied, "I'm doing pretty well, too. I don't think I have as much trouble sleeping as the rest of you guys, though."
"How do you do it?" Levi said, joking. He sighed and leaned against the wall behind him. "Can I be honest with you Lis? Like, tell you a secret?"
"Mm…" Kas looked up when they reached the bottom of the stairs, looking pale and drained. "I guess we should go and see if the others are awake, yeah?"
Lis shrugged.
"I dunno, that's a good question. I'm usually able to sleep just fine when I know others are around on watch or I'm otherwise pretty safe. Always been the more relaxed type."
She tilted her head a bit at Levi's next words.
"Yeah, sure! What's up? My lips are sealed."
"Yeah, but I think Lis is taking care of that for the most part," Tohru said, "Let's just get you sitting down in the waiting area, and I'll grab those crutches from where I dropped them."
"Okay…" Kas fell quiet and closed his eyes when Tohru set him down. He was exhausted, and his leg was still hurting badly because the meds hadn't kicked in yet.
Tohru let out a sigh as he went back to grab the crutches. He wasn't gone very long, but it was long enough for him to collect himself a little more.
He slid a chair out in front of where Kas sat as he rested the crutches on the floor.
"Here, prop your leg up on this. It should be better that way."
Kas seemed pretty out of it by the time Tohru returned, his gaze shifting in and out of focus. "Mmmnh… what…?" He looked up, whining softly in pain.
"Put your injured leg up on this chair," Tohru repeated gently, "Keeping it elevated is better for healing."
His brow was a bit furrowed with concern, but he tried to remain outwardly calm.
Kas obeyed with a little difficulty and then closed his eyes, too tired to stay awake much longer. His knee was visibly swollen even through his leggings, and it was very painful. "When… uh… meds?" He asked weakly. "When will they work…?"
"Probably within the next ten minutes?" Tohru guessed, though he wasn't certain.
In fact, he wasn't completely sure over-the-counter NSAIDS would put a dent in Kas' pain at all.
"Can I help you focus on something else in the meantime?"
"Mmmmh… I dunno…" Kas coughed weakly and curled up a bit on the chair, looking very uncomfortable. "Just don't wanna think… it huuuurts… make it stoooop…"
Levi took a deep breathe in and sighed it out. "I think- I uh- oh fuck." He rubbed his eyes. "I think I like Tohru. As in, more than friends kinda like." He tipped his head back and let it hit against the wall. "Ugh, it just feels dumb to think about at the moment. The world's on fire and I'm just a dumb gay boy with a crush. It's all I think about."
"Aghhh… I'm so sorry-" Tohru sighed, clearly frustrated, "I should've just gone by myself, and I wouldn't have made things worse."
He found himself staring at Kas' knee, and his throat caught a bit as he noticed it was almost certainly more swollen than before- or maybe misshapen? Or was he just imagining it was worse? Either way, he was really worried Kas had dislocated it again, or otherwise hurt himself worse.
"Kas, um… you don't think it shifted back out of place, do you?" Tohru asked, trying to maintain his calm.
If it had, he wasn't sure how he was going to explain that to whoever had to come and fix it.
Lis laughed softly, a gentle smile on her face.
"It's like that, yknow? Sometimes falling in love at the worst times?" she said, "But who cares if it's the end of the world? Might as well have someone you love at your side."
She thought for a moment.
"As for whether he feels the same way, though, that's always hard to tell, isn't it? I'm just a useless lesbian myself, so I'm not sure how much help I can provide in that department," Lis chuckled, "But if you do want my two cents, I think he definitely looks at you differently than the rest of us. He seems to go to you for comfort. That's gotta mean something, right?"
Kas' eyes were stinging with pained tears by now, and he was hugging himself tightly while trying to distract himself from the pain. "I-I dunno… maybe…? I… I-I really don't know how to tell, I just know— that it hurts a lot…" His breathing hitched and he paled further as his knee touched the chair.
"O-okay," Tohru whispered, "I can't really tell just looking either. I'm sorry-"
He pulled an ice pack from his bag and squeezed it until it started feeling cold.
"Here, this should help dull it some more, and it'll bring down the swelling."
Kas grimaced when the ice pack touched his leg, but he tried his best to keep quiet and still. "What… what are we supposed to do if it is dislocated again…?"
"Put it back in place again," Tohru replied shakily, "But probably splint it or find a brace or something this time. It'll be fine, we just need to fix it if it is."
Kas whimpered softly and curled up tighter. "B-But it hurt really bad when they did it last time… it's gonna hurt more again… w-why can't it just fix itself…?"
