Tohru threw his bag down and got to his knees, fumbling for his med kit. His supplies were dwindling with as much as he had to use it, but he wasn't going to deny care because of it.
"Name's Tohru," he murmured, snapping the case open and scanning over the supplies.
He gave a short pause, and asked the dreaded question: "Was she bitten?"
"No problem! Is she gonna be okay?" He asked softly, looking down at the injured girl. Although he had seen his parents die, he didn't remember it, and he'd been traveling alone ever since. He had only seen the aftermath of death; he'd never seen it happen right before his eyes that he remembered.
“N-No, she just fell out of a tree but she landed really badly…” Luka told him. Bean nodded, looking away.
Tohru's expression fell. That was good, right? But it wasn't easy. Not for him.
"Alright, how'd she land? What else can you tell me so I can help?"
He pulled out some disinfectant, seeing that several people had already grabbed bandages. Then, he grabbed his bedroll and laid it out so they had a place the girl could lie down.
Luka moved his twin onto the bedroll. Meanwhile, Bean described how Hailey had climbed the tree to see if she could find the outpost originally but she fell and got a really bad gash in her gut. “I-It’s really bad…”
Mori kept close to Tohru, watching the process. He paled when he saw the wound, looking away for a moment to draw in a few deep, wavering breaths. It didn't look good at all, and there really wasn't much he could do. He brought the bandages already, but he couldn't do much more than that. He had no exploitable skills for circumstances like this. He glanced back over, trembling lightly.
(By the way, Hailey has to die unfortunately ;-;)
(Mori boutta have a traumatic experience 😀 👯)
Tohru wasn't usually squeamish. Far from it, really. But when he took a closer look at the wound, he suddenly felt sick to his stomach.
"I…" he murmured, shuddering a bit.
He didn't want to tell these kids he couldn't do anything. But that was the truth. Even if she had the medical help that doctors and surgeons could offer, it was possible she wouldn't have made it.
"I… I'm not so sure we can do anything."
Tohru's voice fell to a weak whisper.
"I'm really sorry."
He was pretty sure whatever she had landed on had damaged internal organs as well, and that was way out of his ability to treat.
"I think… I think all we can do is make her as comfortable as possible."
Lilac and Bean gasped. “N-No…” Luka muttered, “No, no, no…I can’t lose her! Please!” Luka cried.
Tohru bowed his head.
"I know it's hard. Is this your first time losing someone?" he asked.
He reached out to put a hand over Hailey's arm, trying to soothe her in some capacity when he was barely holding it together himself. He'd seen a lot of people die, but never a child.
Luka cried as he softly hugged his twin. Bean and Lilac tried to hold back tears to stay strong for their siblings but failed as they joined the hug.
(hi, Hailey’s gonna die ;-;)
Mori watched the siblings, his own eyes stinging with tears. He held one hand over his mouth, feeling sick to his stomach at the thought. This girl was going to die, and none of them could do anything to stop it. He kept close to Tohru, trembling a bit and obviously upset, but keeping quiet so as to not draw attention to himself.
(me: hugs Mori you should never have to see this-)
“I-I really hoped w-we’d all be together with Mom and Dad…” Hailey managed to get out in between coughs, “Guess I was wrong…”
Lyn watched the scene unfold, her limbs beginning to shake. She felt her chest tighten and her eyes beginning to water. She did not want to see another dead body, not again. She simply averted her eyes, letting Josefine put an arm around her. They backed away, knowing it wasn’t their place to be apart of this.
Josefine scowled, unsure of how to feel. She’d barely known these kids for five minutes. Yeah, it was cruel that one of them was dying already, but that just meant she’d been right. Why should they go looking for someone to take care of them when they’re all going to die anyway?
Lilac looked at them, her face filled with desperation. It was as if she was begging them to not go. Bean wrapped her arm around her younger sister but failed to fully comfort her. She couldn’t blame Lilac.
Josefine blinked. “She needs us, Lyn,” she whispered.
“She does…?” Lyn sniffed. “Of course she does. But I’m afraid. And this doesn’t feel right.”
“She needs us,” the former repeated. “So we’re going.”
She guided Lyn over to the siblings, giving a nod to Tohru. Lyn looked just a little to see where Lilac was, and put a hand on her shoulder, closing her eyes, refusing to open them, even as tears spilled out. Josefine stayed standing, tapping her thigh and keeping a silent vigil.
Lilac turned to Lyn and immediately hugged her. She sobbed into the older girl’s embrace as Bean held Luka close. Luka held Hailey’s hand, knowing she won’t live to morning but not wanting to leave her alone.
Mori hiccuped weakly, the sound muffled by the mask and his hand. He moved closer to Tohru, a couple of tears rolling down his cheeks. He closed his eyes, not wanting to see the scene anymore, and hugged Tohru, burying his face in the man's side.
(immediately hugs him because he’s a little bean)
“I…I love you guys so much…” Hailey told her siblings weakly. “H-Hails, p-please…j-just stop…” Bean choked out, tears falling down her face.
Lilac’s forced Lyn’s eyes open in surprise, only catching a glimpse of Hailey before closing her eyes again. For some reason, Lilac’s hug caught her off guard. Why did she deserve to be hugged? But then she realized that she was being hugged because Lilac needed comfort, it wasn’t because of Lyn herself. Lyn held the younger girl tight and whispered, “Shhhh, shhhh,” too soothe her, but she didn’t think it would do much.
Josefine stared at the grass. She could hear Hailey’s breathing getting shallow and ragged, and her weak voice filtering though the quiet sobs. She looked up to lock eyes with Tahru.
“Should we get her inside the building?” She asked quietly.
Lilac continued to sob as she hugged Lyn. Bean looked away, tears forming at the edge of her eyes.
Tohru placed an arm around Mori, careful to avoid his injuries. He was probably the only one not in tears, or even close to tears. If anything, he was just shocked. He came to this survivor's outpost expecting to find, well, survivors. Not a dying girl and a bunch of kids who probably didn't know how to protect themselves any better than he did.
"You don't have to look," Tohru murmured to Mori.
He could barely handle the sight himself.
