"They have bridges," Tohru reassured Mori, "They serve as a cutoff point so they can choose who to let in and who to keep out. I mean, bridges are how people got to islands before. I only assume it's the same now."
"They have bridges," Tohru reassured Mori, "They serve as a cutoff point so they can choose who to let in and who to keep out. I mean, bridges are how people got to islands before. I only assume it's the same now."
"What if they don't wanna let us in?" Mori asked nervously, fidgeting a bit with his hands. "What if we go all the way there and then they just turn us away?"
The siblings looked at each other. Surely they wouldn’t do that….right? “I-I doubt that will happen,” Bean said nervously.
"As long as none of us are infected, they have no reason to turn us away," Tohru answered.
He wasn't certain of it, but he was sure enough to actually say it.
"If they're smart, they'll try to save as many people as possible."
"Is it… is it safe there…?" He asked weakly, hugging his stomach more tightly as it angrily growled again. "Do they have supplies and stuff? Could we… stay there?"
Luka wanted to say But what about Hailey? How will we visit her? but he realized Hailey would’ve wanted her family to be safe…even if that meant they wouldn’t visit. Bean shrugged. “Hopefully…” she told Mori, sighing.
"I would like to think so," Tohru said, "At the very least, they should have plenty of food, and I'm sure they've figured out a way to get clean water. But like I said, I don't know much about what's going on there. They were mostly rumors."
Mori nodded a bit and sighed, resting his forehead against his knees. He was achy and exhausted, and his stomach wouldn't shut up. He closed his eyes, figuring it wouldn't hurt to get a bit of rest.
Bean sighed as Luka leaned against his siblings. I think everyone’s so exhausted…we should just sleep… Bean thought to herself as she, Luka, and Lilac all started to fall asleep.
"Um… why don't we move inside?" Tohru suggested, "I'll see if I can find any food, if you guys need it, and we can rest for the night."
Tohru grabbed his bag and hauled the shovels back inside, not stopping to see if the others followed.
The siblings woke up a little and trudged inside, still tired from everything. When they got in, they immediately sat down and curled up against each other.
"It would be nice to settle down," Lyn said. They were almost done with filling the grave. "Sef, you're being very quiet. Is there something on your mind?"
Josefine paused in her scooping dirt. "A lot of things, but one of them can be saved for later. But I guess…" she started filling again. "I was just thinking about my biological family again."
She wondered if they were still alive and had made it somewhere safe. Could they be on one of the islands? Did she really want to know that?
Lyn nodded, deciding not to ask further. At least, not now.
When they got inside they immediately showered and clean up. They stepped into the room where all the mattresses and blankets and pillows were and found the Rose siblings in the spot where they slept the night before. The sight was bittersweet; Lilac had found at least some of her family, it wouldn't just Lilac, Lyn and Josefine anymore.
"Make some room," Josefine chuckled. The hot shower made both of them even more lethargic.
The sisters held onto Luka in their sleep as Luka kept twisting and turning. He mumbled and kept moving.
"Sef, clearly they are too tired…" Lyn was interrupted by a yawn. "Too tired to move over. But…"
She bent down and gently touched Luka's shoulder. "Shhh, shhh, it's alright," she cooed. Josephine went around, making a comfortable spot for herself and Lyn, muttering to herself in Portuguese.
Luka stopped moving and cuddled against Bean, smiling a little in his sleep. Bean held him close.
Mori managed to drag himself to his feet and followed the other's inside, rubbing at his eyes sleepily. He huddled up on the corner of a mattress, curling in on himself a bit, and yawned. It was hard to get himself settled and comfortable, but he eventually managed it, dozing off into a light sleep soon after.
"Pobres meninos," Josefine murmured sympathetically. Lyn gave a sad smile and stood, seeing Josefine had made a small nest of blankets and pillows. They had changed into their sleepwear while in the bathrooms, so it was easy to get comfortable. They curled up next to each other, and Lyn yawned again, leaning on the other's shoulder.
"We should talk," Josefine said.
"We should," Lyn replied. "What were you thinking about earlier?"
"Just…" she sighed. "The future, I guess. Are you really sure about Tohru?"
"For the most part, yes. But we can keep an eye on him."
"Yeah, right, but… It's not just the three of us anymore."
"Yeah… Are you upset about that?"
"No, no, it's just been that way for so long, I guess it's hard for me to wrap my mind around."
Lyn nodded. "And your family?"
"Oh, it's nothing. Just wondering if they might be… Lyn?"
Her breathing had turned soft and rhythmic. She'd fallen asleep.
Tohru made sure they were locked in before settling down.
He was glad to rest his tired body, but he found it impossible to sleep. So much responsibility had just fallen to him. Had he been alone and died that way, no one would care. It ultimately wouldn't have mattered. But now he had several other lives to look after again. Knowing that last time he failed at the very same was terrifying.
Mori stirred in the middle of the night, roused by memories of strong emotions connected to events he didn't quite remember. Although he couldn't determine the cause, he still felt shaky and upset, and found himself wandering over to Tohru's bed. Assuming the man was asleep and also not wanting to wake him, he just quietly curled up beside him and eventually managed to drift off again.
Bean soon stirred awake, for reasons unknown. Was it the urge to check the time? Probably not. Was it the urge to watch her siblings and keep them safe? Most likely. Nevertheless, she woke up and found herself looking at Lilac and Luka’s faces. God, they looked like they hadn’t slept in a while. Bean sighed.
(Poor Bean, she didn’t ask for this to happen)
Tohru was only half-asleep when Mori came to snuggle up next to him. He didn't move, not wanting to scare the child away.
This kid depended on him more than anyone else ever had. It was intimidating, but he appreciated it.
Tohru continued through the night, unable to fully rest, but still comforted by Mori's presence next to him.
Bean laid down again, staring up at the ceiling. She felt Luka’s embrace even though he was asleep. She glanced at him, smiling softly before that smile faded. She went back to staring at the ceiling, still in shock at everything that happened. I can’t believe this…just months ago, we were with our parents and Hailey. We were so happy…now, it’s just us three. she sighed, keeping these thoughts to herself.
Mori was still fast asleep in the morning, his head resting against Tohru's chest. He didn't stir much, even though his stomach was audibly growling. He hadn't eaten anything in almost a day, and while he didn't mind too much, his body begged to differ. "Mmm…"
Bean covered her face with her hands, trying to resist the tears that threatened to fall down her face. She had been struggling ever since this apocalypse started but hid it from her siblings in fear of worrying them. Now that Lilac and Luka were asleep, however, she couldn’t hide anything any longer. She started to quietly sob as she tried to not wake her siblings up.
