Mori decided to follow Tohru, keeping a few feet behind the man as he walked. He glanced around as he did so, seeming a bit nervous. His mouth was dry and he was a little woozy as well from not eating, but he didn't like to complain about that kind of thing. He just hoped that the pantry would have something edible in it that they could take with them.
Lilac and Luka rubbed their eyes as Bean followed Tohru and Mori. She figured it was best if all three of them look that way they could possibly find more stuff.
Tohru opened the pantry door. It was mostly dust and cobwebs, save a jar of peanut butter, two soup cans, and a can of tuna.
It wasn't great, but it was something.
"This should be enough to hold us over," Tohru sighed, "but we're probably going to have to get some more food on our own later."
Bean nodded. “Yeah….” she sighed, looking away. It definitely wasn’t much but it was the best they had.
Mori nodded and pulled a soup can off of the shelf he could reach. "I'm sure we'll find something. There's still animals and stuff we can catch, right?"
"Oh, yeah, that's what I've mainly been living off of," Tohru replied, "And to think I was considering going vegetarian before this shitshow…"
"Where's vegetarian?" Mori asked, confused. The use of 'going' made him think that vegetarian was a place. "Did it get overrun by the zombies?"
“No, kid. A vegetarian is someone who doesn’t eat meat,” Bean told him, trying to hold back laughter.
"Ohh… why not?" Mori asked, still seeming confused. "Isn't meat good for you?"
“Yeah, but that’s their decision if they don’t want to eat it,” Bean nodded, pulling Mori close.
"Oh," Tohru murmured, trying to think of how to explain it simply, "Well, it's not because it's bad for you. It's more because it's bad for the animals. Yknow, since they get killed. That's one reason people might not eat meat."
"Oh…" Mori was quiet for a moment, contemplating the new information. "But meat is good for us, and there's a lot of animals, right? If we don't eat the animals, then there's gonna be too many of them or something."
“Good point,” Bean nodded again. She was glad Mori didn’t focus too much on the killing part.
"Eating wild animals is definitely better," Tohru agreed, "And especially now, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive."
That wasn't really his reasoning, but it would've been a headache to explain to a seven-year-old.
"Hunting sure is a pain, though. I usually try to fish instead when I can."
(Tohru trying to explain the ethics of vegetarianism to a seven year old-)
"Yeah… I think I've fished before, but I don't have a fishing pole with me." Mori shrugged a bit and rested his head against Bean. "We should probably bring the food out so we can share with everybody else."
Bean nodded again. “Of course,” she smiled.
(I'm getting breakfast, I'll reply when I get back)
Tohru let out a heavy sigh and took the food back to the room where everyone else was.
"Here, we found some things to eat," he said, "Take what you want."
Mori sat down on the ground and started quietly eating a bit, not wanting to eat too much since there was so little.
All the siblings nodded, grabbing their choices. Bean sighed. This was gonna be hard for everyone, for sure.
