He frowned a little. "Those are people?" he asked, looking from Jude, to a child, and back again. "But they're so…noisy. And dirty. And…tiny."
"They're young," Jude smiled, kissing his cheek before picking up a large rabbit quietly idling nearby. He glanced back at the smiling children around them and chuckled, "Most of 'em here are only about four or five, and they're still growing."
Nyx frowned a little bit. "But they're tiny. And loud." He repeated, shaking his head slightly. "I don't like them."
Jude quietly snickered to himself, petting the rabbit's fur, "Yeah, they're noisy, but they're also pretty cool. They won't always stay that way, you know; loud and tiny." He smiled, "We were all children before."
Nyx frowned. "Well…maybe so, but…" He sighed. "Why would anyone choose to keep those things near them?" He obviously didn't quite grasp the idea of a family, of what having kids was all about.
Jude let out a slow breath, "Because it's fulfilling, I guess," He smiled, glancing at a child holding the hands of both of their parents, "You make them happy, they make you happy, and…yeah." He never knew if that had happened with his family; happiness was often confused with his bland achievements.
He frowned a little. "How does a screaming little banshee make someone happy?" He asked, eyebrows pulling together in confusion.
Jude let out a softened laugh as he put down the rabbit, "You'd be surprised," He shrugged, "I don't really know how to explain it but…it's a very beautiful thing– having children in your life." A quieter child with oversized glasses had wandered over to the rabbit nearby, slowly petting its soft fur.
Nyx shook his head. "I don't understand that." He replied. He took a few steps away, petting a goat.
"They aren't always noisy," Jude said, nudging a small pile of hay with his foot, "It's something…hereditary. Like…love." He shrugged, "Humans need to love and…be loved, and this is how we do that; through raising these 'screaming little banshees.'"
Nyx shook his head a little bit. "But I don't have any children, and I've turned out just fine." he replied, looking at Jude curiously, not quite sure he understood what Jude was talking about at all.
"Yeah, a lot of people don't have children." Jude said with a nod, "But you were raised, weren't you? Learned how to walk and talk, one way or another. It's like a cycle; adults raise children into adulthood, and so on."
He frowned a little. "No, I was grown in a tank and walking and talking was programmed into my head." he replied, eyebrows drawing together as he looked over at Jude.
Jude didn't know how to further explain this. He wasn't a parent, after all. "But…you want to be with people, right?" He shrugged, "–To learn new things and feel like you belong?" Jude tried to use his own childhood– or what should have been a happy childhood to reference, "That's why we need to be around people as we go through our lives."
Nyx still didn't quite understand this. "But I don't belong." he replied slowly. "I'm too…different." he shrugged his shoulders. "Besides, most people just want to figure out new ways to utilize my programming or my limbs or…whatever."
"But those people aren't here anymore," Jude reminded him, reminding himself that they could still very well be in New York. He dragged his gaze from off the ground, "–And you're where you belong. You belong here."
Nyx shrugged again. "I don't belong here. I don't…belong anywhere." he replied slowly, quietly, looking around and shaking his head. He took a deep breath.
"Aw, Nyx, come on," Jude sighed, smiling as he reached for him. "You're getting a little freaked out, I get it. Just take a few breaths for me?" He looked at him hopefully, his hand trailing a quiet path through his dark hair.
Nyx leaned into Jude's hand a little bit, taking another deep breath. "Right. Yeah. Sorry." he mumbled, biting his lip for a moment.
"It's okay. It's a lot to take in." Jude nodded, meeting his bright blue eyes as a toddler chased a goat behind him, "You belong. You deserve to be happy. And you deserve to have a day filled with animals and sun, in the best city in the world."
Nyx took a deep breath again, looking up at Jude. He shrugged his shoulders a little bit, then moved, wrapping his arms around Jude and holding onto him. "Sorry…" he mumbled.
"Don't apologize, it's okay," Jude smiled, sliding his arms over Nyx's shoulders and resting his chin on his head of dark hair. "There's a baby goat eating my shoelaces," He said without looking down.
Nyx stayed pressed against Jude for a moment, then glanced down when he heard that. "Oh. I don't think they're supposed to eat shoelaces, are they?"
"Oh, no, it's part of their diet; great for their bones," Jude said with a serious face that melted into a smile, "I'm kidding. Shoo~" He laughed, nudging the little goat that promptly frolicked away.
Nyx watched the goat go, smiling a little bit. "Alright." He replied softly. He kissed Jude's cheek, letting out a slow, quiet breath.
