Briar sighed.
Briar sighed.
Caleb whispered, "She sounds sweet…"
She smiled. "she's the sweetest".
Caleb glanced up from underneath his hair. "Who does she look like?"
" she has your hair and eyes" she said.
Caleb smiled softly. "I bet she has her mother's stubbornness too?"
she laughed a bit "of course".
Caleb stuck his hands in his pockets. "Um… So, when may I see her..?"
"I imagine you have things to do or id let you see her now".
Caleb shrugs. "Uh, make a tourniquet for my leg? That's pretty much it." He could barely feel his leg anymore…
she nodded.
Caleb sat on a chair and asked, "Can you hand me that blanket please?" He pointed to the one that covered him earlier.
she grabbed the blanket handing it to hiim,
“Thank you.” Caleb said politely, as if she had handed him some salt over a dinner table rather than a filthy blanket in a room of dead people. He shook the blanket out and wrapped it tightly around his leg, using his knife to twist it tight enough to stop the flow of blood from the wound in his leg. “You’re an amazing shot, by the way. Were you always that good or is it practice?”
¨i walked into training and they sent me out telling me I didn´t need practice¨ she said.
Caleb grinned. "Top cop indeed! I don't know if I should actually be surprised or not." He stood up, wobbling a bit.
Briar smiled. "Well I'm glad to see Your not dead" she said.
Caleb chuckled. "Not yet anyway. I've had a couple close calls over the years…" He then looked back out the door. "Why are you the only cop here? I mean, "Top Cop" and all that, but I'd think you'd have at least a couple backups."
she pointed to her walkie-talkie " I can call back up".
Caleb shrugged and started limping towards the door, hands stuffed in his pockets, and shoulders hunched nervously.
"Are you okay" she asked.
Caleb just shrugged again. He didn't feel right lying to her, but…
"If your good I have to get home to lizzie" she said.
Caleb just nodded and limped out the door into the pouring rain. He dragged his lame foot through the puddles and gravel. He looked pitiful, soaked through all his clothes, his hair plastered to his face, like a stray dog's fur to it's bony ribs.
Briar sighed and made her way to the car driving home to her daughter.
