Harlow reached out and hit the phone, making it drop.
Harlow reached out and hit the phone, making it drop.
Santiago stumbled to his feet, reaching out to take the phone from her. “Rylan, no!” He cried, his hand grabbing onto her wrist tightly. “Put the phone down!”
The phone slammed to the ground. Alec's voice was now replaced by static.
"I-I'm sorry, Santiago." Rylan said, looking up at him. "I just can't let this happen."
“Rylan, there are other ways!” Harlow said desperately.
"No. There aren't!" She cried out. "He's going to kill them, then he's going to come for us too. This is the only way!"
Santiago still gripped her wrist, looking down at her with a pained glint in his eyes. “I’m not letting you leave to be murdered by that monster!” He said, his voice raised almost to a shout, his tone on the line between anger and upset.
“Yes there are! We’re all fighters. We can do this. Take them out, get Santiago’s family to safety. You don’t have to let yourself get EXECUTED!”
"It's about time I was executed!" Rylan choked out. "I've been running all my life. I don't want to run away again." Tears started to stream down her face. "I ran when they came to kill my family. I could have saved them too."
“Rylan, listen to me. None of what happened means you deserve to get killed. I’ve been running too. It gets tiresome, but it gets better. Especially knowing we can do something! We both know Alec most likely won’t listen and will kill Santiago’s family anyways after you die. It’s not going to work. But we can fight our way out of this! I was trained as a soldier. Santiago is a soldier. And you can fight good enough to take out a grown man. Ee’ve got this, but it’s not going to happen if you die,” Harlow said, grabbing Rylan’s shoulders.
Santiago felt more choked up than before. How could she say that she should be executed. He opened his mouth, but his mind seemed to have blanked on the English that he knew.
"It's never gotten better. Nothing has ever gotten better." Rylan explained. "We're talking about the whole Republic pointing guns at our heads."
“You can’t just give yourself up like that,” Santiago exclaimed, breathing shakily.
"I can't let your family die." She said, turning towards him, her amber eyes heavy with sadness.
“We can change things. We can do it,” Harlow threw her hands up in frustration. “Rylan if you walk to your death, I’m going with you.”
Santiago ran a hand over his face, shaking his head. “We’ll figure something else out. We still have time. If you were killed trying to help my family and I,” he paused to take a deep, shuddering breath, “I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself.”
“Great, no more debate on it. Majority wins. Here, Santiago, have a gun. I’m going to look for some more,” she said, placing the pistol in his hand and turning back to the boxes.
Rylan opened her mouth, but paused at Santiago's words. She glanced at Harlow. They really didn't want her to die. "We can figure something out. . . talk to the Patriots. They tried to get me to join once."
"Attack them from inside. Make them think that I'm going to get executed."
“I’m not great at plans, you two discuss and I’Lol give tips when I can,” her voice was muffled by the boxes. “Have another gun!”
Santiago looked at the gun in his hands before stuffing the weapon into the waistband of his jeans. He chewed on his lower lip and nodded, agreeing with Rylan’s idea. He felt sick to his stomach with worry.
“Oh yeah, Santiago, Rylan, didn’t you two want to dye your hair?”
"I'll pass, they'll want to see my face." She explained.
“Er, I’d rather not mess with my hair,” Santiago murmured quickly.
“Okay. Santiago?”
Rylan looked down at the guns. She had only fired one twice, and never liked them. Killing someone was not something that she enjoyed. Rylan looked back at Santiago.
