Phoebe glanced at Marco. “Um, how’d you get your tallies, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Phoebe glanced at Marco. “Um, how’d you get your tallies, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Marco shrugged. "When I was four, I was trying to make a snowman in the middle of summer. I succeeded, but they caught me."
It took a few minutes, but Micah easily fell asleep. His dreams were filled with different ways the events of that day could have gone; some good and some bad.
“Oh.”, Phoebe glanced down. “Sorry if it’s a sensitive subject, I can’t keep my mouth shut sometimes.”
Mariko went back to her seat and sighed. She was going to have to stay awake because she was the only one who knew where her grandfather stayed.
After only a few minutes, Micah woke up. He put his legs down and glanced over at Mariko. Micah never could fall asleep easily.
Mariko looked at Micah, and noted he was waking up, "Just 30 minutes now."
Micah smiled. "Great." He tried not to show it but the closer they got, the more nervous he got. Micah was usually a pretty safe person and this was the most interesting thing that ever happened to him.
"It's gonna be okay." Mariko attempted a smile, "My grandfather knows what he's doing."
"Yeah…I'm just not used to doing stuff like this. I don't want to mess anything up for you guys." Micah gestured to Marco, Phoebe, and Mariko. "All of you have at least three tallies. I don't want to do something stupid and get you guys…" He trailed off.
"Killed?" Mariko tilted her head and played with her gloves, "I've run through all the possible probabilities that kill us and I've mapped out every step we could possibly take." she clasped her hands neatly in her lap, "We die in about 67 realities, but we don't die in 45."
Micah flinched. "I'm not sure I like those odds."
"The most important thing is that we don't die in this reality." Dove wanted to reassure Micah, "As long as we do the right thing, in the right way."
Micah nodded, smiling slightly to make himself feel a little happier. "I'll be sure to listen to you then."
"Good." Mariko blushed.
He awkwardly swung his legs back and forth again, thinking of something to say. Micah took out the rubix cube again and leaned forward, handing it to Mariko. "Could you teach me how to do this?"
"I..sure." Mariko took it and scanned it, deciding how she would turn it. Her hands flew over it and in 7 seconds, the rubix cube had all the colors aligned.
Micah stared at her in shock. "…How…how did you do that?"
"Programming." Mariko handed it back to Micah, "I scanned it."
"Neat." Micah said, trying to think of a word other than cool; he'd said it too much already. He looked over at Phoebe and Marco. "How do you think they're doing?"
"They're talking about-" Mariko turned, "I probably shouldn't tell. Sorry, my ear. It's not human."
"I don't want to seem rude…but how much of you is…human? I mean, the robot stuff is cool and all but…" Micah nervously ran his fingers through his hair, hoping that Mariko wouldn't be offended by the question.
Marco noticed Mariko listening to their conversation. He turned back to Phoebe. "Hey, it's nothing… I mean… I'm fine with talking about it."
"Oh." Mariko remembered her body scan back at the lab. "I'm 58.3% human."
"Oh alright." Micah nodded and sighed. He took out the pocket knife he had from his pocket and began tinkering with the rubix cube, trying to get it to do something else.
