Finn ducked his head as he walked in, hoping the teacher wouldn’t recognize him.

Jayde chose the seat farthest away from the teacher's table that wasn't currently taken and put her bag down. She waved Finn over next to her before taking out her stuff.
Finn sat down next to her, noticing the fact that his cousin was in one of He first seats, and that one of his friends was in the middle row.
"Is this teacher related to you?"
“Yep. Aunt Gloria.” Finn whispered. “Hates me.”
"That's rough but I'll be here and won't let her give you any crap." She said, not caring if she got kicked out of the school or not. She didn't even want to be in the school in the first place so she had nothing to lose.
“I can take care of it. The kid in the first row hates her too. He’ll say something before either of us have a chance to.”
"Ok then, but I still will." She said, not changing her mind. "What are we even supposed to learn in here?" She whispered back
“Books. Verbs. Essays. You know.”
Jayde groaned before turning back to the teacher and zoning out.
“Good morning, class. I’m glad the majority of you were aware of what time class begins. We will begin with a three page essay, double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font. Tell me about yourself.” The teacher said, while writing her name on the board.
Jayde listened the second the teacher said essay. What the hell, it's the first day back. She thought, taking out her laptop and going to word.
“Young lady!” Mrs. Carson said sharply. Everyone in the room turned to look st Jayde.
Jayde looked up from her screen and scowled at the teacher before answering. "What?"
“I did not say to get your laptop out yet. You must wait until I’m finished giving directions.”
Finn’s cousin, who’s name was Riley, rolled his eyes and said, “I see you’re no nicer at school than at the family reunions, eh?”
Jayde barely stifled a laugh before closing her laptop and turning her attention to what was happening.
“Riley Maddox, do I need to give you detention on the first day?”
“I don’t know, do you? That’s kind of your job to decide.”
Finn smacked a hand to his face in pure exasperation with his cousin.
Jayde pulled her laptop up under the desk so the teacher wouldn't see and started scrolling a story.
“Finnegan, do you have an issue as well?” Mrs. Carson asked.
“No, ma’am.”
“Very well. I’d like to continue teaching, please.”
Jayde heard the name and turned to Finn, stifling a second laughter. She closed her computer and focused on the teacher.
“It’s not that funny!” Finn hissed, whiched caused Mrs. Carson to whip around and stomp up to him, handing Finn a detention slip.
Jayde stopped her laughter the second the teacher came around their area but still pointed with a face towards Finn.
Finn rolled his eyes, caught his mistake, and then received a sharp smack to the head from his aunt. “Don’t sass me mister.”
Mrs. Carson headed back to the front of the classroom, while Riley attempted to make eye contact with Finn to check on him.
"Hey, you okay?" She asked him, turning her attention to him, not caring about what the teacher had to say.
“I’m fine…” Finn said, not looking fine.
“Corporal punishment isn’t legal here!” Riley protested to the teacher.
“Mr. Maddox, I will have to give you a second detention.”
