"I'll try." They chuckled softly, holding onto Jay tightly. When they reached the side of the road, Kale waved out an arm and soon a car pulled over. The driver's window rolled down to reveal a concerned woman and Kale explained the situation as best as they could. The woman didn't seem convinced yet took a moment to call the police, repeating what Kale had said. Kale rested their head on Jay, whispering while the woman was on the phone. "I hope this works…"
"yeah. Hopefully." Jay replied.
The woman turned to the two of them, holding the phone towards Kale. "They want to know how to get to this…orphanage."
Kale gave rough directions to the police and they informed them that help was on the way. The police told Kale and Jay to wait at any entrance road that led to the orphanage before the call ended. Kale passed the phone back to the woman and thanked her for her help. She pulled away and drove down the road. Once out of sight, Kale ruffled Jay's hair gently. "It won't be long now i should think, i just hope that nothing goes wrong in the meantime."
Jay nodded. "Do you know where the road would be?"
"I do, it's not far from here. From first glance it looks like just a bunch of trees but there's actually a road there that just blends in. How else would the deliveries get there? It's goinv to be harder to find it since it's dark but i'll know it when i do see it." Kale led the way to the road, and though their movements were hesitant they stuck by Jay, still holding him tightly. "As soon as sirens can be heard we will be safe, it's better to not let our guard down until then."
"Yep, I'm listening for anything." Jay replied still walking.
Jordan had looped around and was headed a different direction. He had been here too long and knew where the road was. He staggered and limped
Jay wondered what happened to Jordan.
"Hey, what's with that expression?" Kale asked. "You're worried about him too huh…I'm sure he's alive.."
"Yeah, He seemed strong and capable of surviving." Jay replied. "So are we close to the road."
Jordan leans a tree at the very edge of the road. He looks around, hearing sirens. He shudders at the memories
"Yeah we're here now." Kale came to a halt. "I wish they'd hurry up, one of us is gonna keel over if they don't." They let out a nervous chuckle.
"Alright." Jay said. "So what is around us." He asked trying to distract Kale.
"A hell of a lot of trees, some cars keep going past.. Theres a black sky since there's no streetlights here but its filled with millions of tiny glowing stars. One would almost say romantic." They laughed.
Jordan broke off a sturdy tree branch, using it as a walking stick. His injured leg dragging behind himself as he walks down the street
"Well it sounds like it looks pretty nice." Jay responded.
"Yeah.. It is.." Kale rested their head on top of Jay's, closing their eyes. A few moments passed before they heard a noise. "Sirens!"
Kale waved their arms high to get the attention of the approaching vehicles, quickly explaining how to get to the orphanage when they stopped. They added that the houseparents were likely armed. Soon the police were plummeting down the almost hidden road.
"Do you want to follow them?" Kale asked Jay.
"sure. Maybe we could find Jordan." Jay said as he listened to the sirens.
"I should have given him a safe word to shout.. He could be anywhere." Kale turned in all directions. "I'm not sure where to begin, he's most likely not even near the orphanage now if he's alive."
"want to split up to find him." Jay asked knowing how stupid the idea was.
"Are you kidding me?!" Kale's voice cracked as they spoke. "I'm not risking losing you out there!"
"fine. It wasn't a great idea anyway." Jay said then sighed for a second then screamed Jordan's name.
Kale stumbled back a bit, a new, uneasy feeling coursing through them. They joined in, loudly shouting for Jordan.
Jay continued to shout then stopped and sat on the ground.
