"Y-Yeah, thanks…" Rowan sat down weakly in the chair, his knees turning in a bit. He jumped when he saw the griffin, clearly unsure what to think about it. "U-Um… I… what is that?" He asked nervously.
"Y-Yeah, thanks…" Rowan sat down weakly in the chair, his knees turning in a bit. He jumped when he saw the griffin, clearly unsure what to think about it. "U-Um… I… what is that?" He asked nervously.
Matthew sat down in another chair, watching Rowan.
"This is my griffin," he explained. "Sir Fluff." He smiled faintly, reaching over to gently rub Fluff's head.
"He's harmless, I promise."
Rowan hesitated before tentatively holding one hand out to the griffin. "We don't have these back at home either… as far as I know, anyway. Mostly just cats and dogs and stuff."
Fluff sniffed Rowan's have before pressing his head into his, letting out a soft trill.
"That sounds… Drab," Matthew admitted. A world with only cats and dogs? He'd hate it.
Rowan nervously pet Fluff, still obviously a bit uneasy. "It's not so bad… they make good pets. I mean, other animals exist, but we mostly just have cats and dogs."
Fluff didn't seem to care for Rowan's nervousness. The griffin climbed up onto the human's lap, settling down and starting to preen his wings.
"I see…" Matthew chuckled gently. "He's taken a liking to you. How peculiar."
"Does he not normally take a liking to people?" Rowan asked softly, hesitating before resuming his petting. He gently scratched the top of Fluff's heh with a quiet sigh. "He seems to be pretty sweet, anyway…"
"No, usually it at least takes a few days. He just doesn't come out to meet new people much." He smiled sweetly.
"Yes, he is. He loves to snuggle." Fluff leaned into Rowan's head, purring softly.
Rowan nodded and kept petting Fluff, soon seeming to relax from his scare earlier. "He kinda reminds me of my dog back at home… she's really sweet too. Loves meeting new people."
"She sounds sweet," Matthew agreed. Fluff paused in his preening to push his head against Rowan's chest gently, nuzzling him.
"Are you doing okay now?" He asked.
"Yeah, I think so…" Rowan smiled softly down at Fluff and kept petting the griffin. "Just spooked me for a moment. I'm really okay…" He was quiet for a bit. "What kind of jobs do you guys have here? Like… what's day-to-day life like?"
"Well, we have the farmers, and the smith, and the guards. I'm one of the guards. We watch over the village in case of an attack. Then there are the mothers, and the traders who go out and get things we can't make from the cities." Matthew thought a moment, sure he had covered everything.
"We're not a very big village, but we get by."
Rowan nodded a bit. "So you guys don't really have any technology or anything? Do you have coffee? I work as a barista at a coffee shop. Thankfully, I'm not working today…"
"Coffee? What's that?" Matthew tilted his head again. "And there are those who use technology, but most rely on magic still." Matthew, folded his ankles, hands resting on his knees.
"Coffee is great. It's… it's a drink that you can make, and it has something called caffeine in it that helps you stay awake. You can put different stuff in it to make it taste better, and it's my job to make coffee for people." Rowan smiled softly. "Do you guys have phones?"
"Oh, cool! We have a drink similar to that, we make it with some of the plants we grow in the farms. We have it at festivals and celebrations so that it can go all night." Matthew was quiet a moment, thinking about the question.
"I've heard of them," Matthew admitted, "But I've never seen one before… they're rare."
Rowan nodded a bit as he listened to Matthew. "Well, I've got my phone on me… without a charger it'll die pretty soon, though, and I shouldn't waste the battery." He sighed softly and pulled out his phone to show Matthew.
Matthew looked at the phone with wide eyes.
"So cool… What does it do?" He asked. He leaned forward a bit, close to Rowan as he looked over the black screen.
"Um… it can do all sorts of things, but I can't do some of them without wifi…" He turned on his phone, which had a picture of him and his dog as both the lock and home screens. "I have games and stuff if you wanna try them out?" He pulled up a puzzle game that had all sorts of different puzzles on it.
Matthew watched the screen with fascination.
"Really?" He asked, looking up with wonder-filled eyes. "I… How do I do it?" He shifted, sitting next to Rowan's side.
"Here, with this one you just have to make rotationally symmetrical shapes to fill up this square…" Rowan demonstrated the game to Matthew, moving pretty quickly from experience. "I play this one the most."
Matthew nodded, watching carefully. When it was his turn, he fell silent, examining everything. After a bit, it seemed he was stuck, but then he reached out, setting all the pieces into place one by one until the puzzle was finished. Not a single redo, or mistake.
"There you go! It gets easier the more you do it." Rowan smiled softly. "You just have to touch where you want to put down the lines… a lot of it is trial and error."
Matthew nodded a bit, still examining the screen.
"This is very amazing," he admitted. "I've never seen something like this before." He grinned, sitting back now in his chair.
"Yeah, it's pretty cool… I don't have my charger with me, though." Rowan sighed, letting Matthew keep playing with his phone. "So I can't waste the battery too much. I doubt I could call anyone anyway, though…"
Matthew looked up, nodding. He set the phone down after a couple more times with the puzzle, thinking there would be better used for it than that they would need. He gave it back to Rowan, thinking.
"I wonder if there might be a way to do that when we get to the cities…"
"I dunno… maybe. I'm just worried that I can't call people from… you know… another dimension." Rowan sighed again and stuck his phone back in his pocket. "I'm sure we'll figure things out."
Matthew nodded. Fluff stretched out on Rowan's lap, curling up and tucking his head under Rowan's arm.
"Well, there are several mages known for magic that connects the different worlds."
Rowan kept idly petting Fluff while he listened. "Really? How can we get in contact with them? I need to get home as soon as possible…" He sighed softly.
"Well, the nearest city with someone like that is a few days fight from here," Matthew started slowly. "But I doubt you'd be okay with traveling like that…" He thought a moment.
