Rowan sighed softly in relief. "Thank you…" He said to the guards, although he was so quiet it was difficult to hear him.
Rowan sighed softly in relief. "Thank you…" He said to the guards, although he was so quiet it was difficult to hear him.
There were a quiet murmur of "you're welcome's," most already ignoring them again. Matthew started carrying Rowan away.
Rowan whimpered as they neared the exit, knowing they'd need to fly again to get down. His heart sped up and he tightened his grip on Matthew.
"You're going to be okay…" Matthew held Rowan close.
"Close your eyes. Try… Try to pretend I'm walking while I'm carrying you."
"B-But it doesn't feel like walking!" Rowan whined, closing his eyes and burying his face in Matthew's shoulder.
"I know, I know…" Me gently rubbed Rowan's back. "I'll make it as short as I can, okay? I'm just going to gather up the things we need, and when I'm done we won't be flying anymore, promise."
"O-Okay…" Rowan sighed shakily, keeping his face hidden as he trembled. He really didn't want to be in the air again, but he didn't have much of a choice.
Matthew held Rowan a moment longer, then took off. He held Rowan tightly to himself, letting gravity bring homely to his home quickly. He leaned carefully, already closing the door.
Rowan was crying again by the time they got to Matthew's house, still trembling. He kept his face buried, not making the mistake of looking down again.
Matthew sat down with Rowan on his lap, gently rubbing his back.
"I've got you, you're safe now."
Rowan hiccuped a bit as he huddled close, whimpering quietly. "I'm s-sorry…" He whispered. "I-I'm sure this is really inconvenient…"
Matthew reached his fingers through Rowan's hair, keeping him close.
"Don't be," he said gently. "I should be the one apologizing to you- I'm the one terrifying you so much…"
Rowan laughed weakly. "Y-Yeah, but this means that we can't fly to the city, which slows us down… it's a stupid fear anyway…"
"It's not stupid. You don't have any way to keep yourself in the air, of course you would be scared of it. It's alright if it takes a bit more time to get to the city." Matthew held Rowan code as the human tried to calm down.
Rowan sighed and huddled closer to Matthew. "I just feel really dumb, you know? Like, of all the fears I could have, it has to be heights…"
"Well, there is a very valid reason for you to be afraid of heights." Matthew held Rowan close, humming gently. Fluff made his way back over, forcing himself up between Rowan and Matthew.
"But there's a lot of people where I'm from that aren't afraid of heights, and none of us have wings!" Rowan sighed softly.
"Well, that's not something we can change," Matthew said. Fluff nuzzled into Rowan, seeing his upset he was.
"All we can do is work with it, and make sure you aren't being terrified all the time."
"I guess so…" Rowan pet Fluff with one trembling hand, still huddled up against Matthew's chest. "I'll try not to be such a wuss about it…"
"I don't think you can," Matthew said gently, "Because you aren't being a wuss now." Fluffy leaned into Rowan's hand, keeping close.
"I kinda am, though… I mean, I'm eighteen and I'm crying over a little air time…" Ryder sighed softly.
"Well, you didn't grow up flying all the time," Matthew pointed out. "And there are those who even live here who are afraid of heights."
"Really? How do they fly, then?" Rowan asked curiously. "That seems like it would even be more inconvenient than it is for us…"
"They build their homes on the ground," Matthew explained. "Everyone helps them when they need to do things that are up here so they don't have to." Matthew smiled faintly.
"Oh… that's nice. So, I guess they don't really get bullied for it or anything?" Rowan asked, confused.
