Shaking his head, he noticed the space between them slowly diminishing. "I'm a Sophomore. Nothing special." Phoenix shrugged just slightly, brushing out the wrinkles in them. There was a group of girls walking by above them. They weren't paying attention to the two, just walking by and having a good time. Though he recognized one of the girls as a friend of his sister. He was pretty sure her name was Harmony. "What about you?"
"Junior," Cicada responded spotting the girls walking above. They didn't pay mind to the pair talking beneath them, as most college students would. She hummed a little as she thought of something else to say. It had to be something good since she really wanted him to be her friend. Was that so bad to want? Her eyes went back to him, "So I've only got two years, including this one, to graduate. I thought you would be older, do you have any siblings?"
Nodding his head slightly, he looked back to her to give her more attention. He didn't want to seem rude, he was just having a hard time focusing without getting anxious. "I've got an older sister. She's something special that's for sure… though I'm mom's favorite." Phoenix shrugged with a light smirk. He always said that, even if their mother disagreed and said she didn't pick favorites. It was obvious to both kids, Phoenix was a mama's boy, and Savanna was a daddy's girl.
Cicada laughed slightly at his last comment. Of course, he was a mama's boy, it made too much sense. It helped explain his dorkiness just ever so slightly. Her mind thought for a moment before she shrugged again. Her smile started to fade into her more natural smirk that she had a lot, "So she's older, how much older? Does she go to college here like you do?"
Nodding he took a moment to think about her question. "Yup, she's older by one year. She's currently a Junior like you." He explained better, biting on his lip just lightly. "She and her best friend share a dorm, speaking of, I think I just saw her in that group that went by. It was the taller blonde." He hummed, watching the girls disappear.
"Oh really? That's cool that the two of you go to the same college," Cicada responded her eyes brightening up a little. He had a sister in her grade? Oh she was definitely befriending her too. Maybe she was in the same dorm building as Cicada. Typically they were separated by grade, at least she assumed so, "And that was her friend group. They seem nice enough. What's her major if you don't mind me asking?"
"Savanna's?" He asked softly, pausing to try and remember. Savanna rarely talked about school, as she never made it a huge priority. "I believe she said it was for fashion design..? I know that's one of her big hobbies, she always talks about that in particular. Though not normally about school, might I add." Phoenix shrugged slightly, running his fingers through his hair once more.
"Ah, okay," Cicada nodded along. Savanna was her name and apparently, she enjoyed fashion design. It may not be her major as Cicada didn't know a lot of schools that did have fashion-based majors, but it was a hobby at the very least. Her eyes looked at him burning just ever so slightly, "I've asked you a lot of questions, haven't I? Want to ask me some?"
(How bad is it, that I want to change the title to 'You're the only ten-I-see'?)
Glancing over his shoulder, he gave her a soft smile before looking back out to the trees. "I don't really care either way. But sure. Where did you grow up? Not around here I'm assuming." Phoenix hummed, running a hand down his face. "I have no real evidence, I'm just guessing here." He hummed once again, adjusting his position so he was facing her better.
(I love it. Please do it lol.)
Cicada bit her lip in thought as she slowly nodded. She let her legs fall into the gap between the table and bench swinging them slowly. She eventually shrugged and responded fairly truthfully, "I don't think I ever lived in this area, yeah. But I spent most of my childhood in the rich suburb of LA before moving around for most of my adolescence. Never really stayed in one place too long before heading off to the next."
(I mean, if you insist XD)
Watching her carefully, he gave her a soft smile when she started kicking her legs back and forth. "Sounds like an exciting life. My mom use to go all over the country, but now she just wants to stay settled here. All of the rest of us want to go and see the world. But we won't argue with her. It's the only thing she ever asks for." Phoenix shrugged, copying her movements mindlessly.
(Yessssssssssss.)
Cicada focused a little and manage to get the pair in rhythm so they kicked at the same time. Her smile stayed soft and she kept back her comments about her own parents. She nodded along and let out a sigh, "It wasn't as exciting as you think, but I'm glad your mom settled down. Maybe once you graduate college you can go off and see the world, but always come back home."
(Loll)
Phoenix let himself begin to day dream, about all of the traveling. It sounded like a dream, he wasn't sure would ever happen. Ever since he was a little boy, he always loved the idea of leaving the town he lived in to go see the world. It made him excited every time he did. "I mean, yeah I could. If I got the money. World traveling sounds fun, until you see the price tag that comes with it. Paying for hotels, and food, and all the attractions. It's a lot."
"Well if you do well in the movie industry then you might get enough money," Cicada responded seeing how his eyes weren't quite as focused on her anymore. She figured he was daydreaming about traveling the world. She shrugged again swinging her legs back and forth a little faster, "Or find yourself a rich girl to marry so you get the money that way. But I'm guessing your not one to do that, are you?"
Shaking his head, he focused back on her. Phoenix repeated her statement mentally, and quickly came up with a response. "Oh, no definitely not. That doesn't seem fair. Also considering I'm only 19, and haven't had a real relationship besides the cheesy high-school ones. I wouldn't marry a woman I just met, just because she had the money I needed." He admitted, letting out a soft sigh.
Cicada laughed at the cheesy high-school comment. She wouldn't know what's that was like, not with her track record of significant others. Well, significant other. She shook off the thought and looked to him grinning, "Just like I thought. You seem like a nice guy, not someone who would use another for their money."
"Of course not. Which is why I find it so odd me and Savanna are siblings. Don't get me wrong, she's a nice girl, but in no way is she a… good girl." Phoenix laughed lightly, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "Though I've talked enough about my family. If it isn't a sore subject, what's your family like?" He asked in a hum, giving her a gentle smile.
"They, uh, died 11 years ago," Cicada responded sheepishly as she played with her own fingers. His gentle smile and constant talking about his own family had been nice. She should have known that eventually the tables would be turned on her. Honestly, she had just been waiting for the question to pop up either now or later, "I've been a foster kid hopping around from home to home ever since. So, uh, I don't have one?"
Letting out a soft sigh, he nodded gently before biting on his lip. "I knew I shouldn't have brought it up. I'm really sorry to hear that Cicada, if I had known I wouldn't have talked about my own." Phoenix whispered, giving her an apologetic look. He just hoped he hadn't gotten on her bad side because of the simple statement. Quietly, he hummed to try and fill the void of silence. "Are you alright? Did I upset you?"
Cicada forced a laugh and waved him off. She forced her true feelings of sorrow and reopened wound down. Talking about family often did hurt a little, but it was sometimes the best way to get people to open up, "You're fine, I'm not upset. Besides, I asked you about your sister and you just went down that rabbit hole. If I couldn't handle talking about it I wouldn't have asked you."
Phoenix wasn't entirely convinced, but he wasn't going to argue around the situation. The sooner they switched topics, the better. "I'm still sorry." He mumbled tracing the grains of wood in the table. He was trying so hard to come up with something else to talk about. Of course everything was related to asking why she was so incredibly dangerous. He couldn't ask any of those. "So… when's your next class?"
"I think it's one of the science gen eds, if I remember right," Cicada responded looking up at the sky. She was in deep thought trying to remember her schedule and eventually nodded, "Yeah that was it. This college has a few required classes my old college didn't have, so I get to take more gen eds. Whoopy di do. I thought I was done with them last year, but nope. Had to transfer."
"Man, I'm sorry. That's the only bad thing about being here, being stuck in the three classes you thought you were finished with. English is my least favorite out of the three." Phoenix rambled slightly, following her gaze upwards. It was pretty outside today, even if it was too hot for his own taste, it was still nice.
Cicada laughed slightly at his rambling. She ended up looking back at him with a soft smile on her face, "I've always enjoyed English classes, not loved them, but they weren't that bad. Math and Physical Education have always been my favorite subjects."
Phoenix hummed with a sigh, trying to sort his phrasing out to make sense. "I never had a way with words. So the 45 minutes of constantly writing and correcting them killed me. Though I agree with you about the Math and PE. Those were the best ones." He nodded slightly, watching as a plane flew by over head.
