She followed him quickly. "Uh, okay."
She followed him quickly. "Uh, okay."
"It'll give you a chance to sit, them being one large room and all." He turned, leading the way into what was indeed a large room with a kitchen one one side and living room set up on the other. "You want anything to drink?"
"Uh, n-no thanks," she replied. Slowly she sat down on the couch and laid her notebook on her lap.
"Let me know if you do." He pulled a bright blue soda from the fridge and unscrewed it, taking a drink as he sat on the arm of the couch.
Slowly she began to write again.
Nicky looked down at her, watching her write.
After a minute, she looked up and saw him watching her. She blushed and looked away. "What?"
His gaze was soft, as well as his voice. "I just like watching you write. There's something I can't understand going on in that mind of yours, and it's captivating."
"Sometimes I don't even understand my own mind," she remarked with a passive laugh.
"Hmmm." He took another drink, eyes never looking away from her.
She shrunk under his lingering gaze and turned a light shade of pink. "Wh-What's next?" she asked, closing the cover of her notebook.
"Well, we could sit and talk here, or I could pull a classic seven year old and show you my bedroom, in a non sexual way."
"Uh, it doesn't matter to me." She fingered the soft cover of her notebook and looked at him.
"Come on then. I'm going to introduce you to my fish." He hopped up and held out his hand, grinning.
She shyly took his hand and stood up.
Nicky wove their fingers together and pulled her along, back down the hall. He stopped in front of a door covered in painted stars and planets, and pushed it open. The room had a definite space theme, and there was a guitar sitting on the bed, and sheet music piled everywhere. "So, it's a mess."
Her eyes scanned over the whole room in awe, not wanting to miss a thing. "Wow…"
Nicky bounced over to a fish tank on a bookshelf, and gestured proudly at the fish. "Here they are!"
She bent down to look inside the tank and smiled. "Do they have names?"
"Yes!" He pointed at each fish, all of five of them different colors and patterns, as he named them. "That's Capitalism, that's Tabasco Sauce, there's Maurice, Finnigan, it's a pun, and that one there is Arianna Grande."
She giggled. "Nice names…"
"Thank you!" His smile was bright and amused, proud of himself for getting her to giggle. "I'll let you name the next fish I get."
Laura smiled, finding herself opening up to him more than she had anyone in her whole life. Except maybe one person…
"We actually had a cat, a couple years ago, and I named him Jesus. Aaron said that was the last time I could ever name any of our pets, so I got my own."
Laura smiled and made a brief note in her book.
