Anna shook her head. “If it wasn’t an accident, I would, but she’s just learning. I can’t do that to her and her family. I’ll come up with the money somehow.”

Ollie growled again. "but… but it only makes sense! Its a good lesson! She's going to think she can get away with it now. Just… just…. I don't want you scraping money for something that wasn't your fault"

Anna set herself firmly. "I will not be pressing charges," she stated, arching her eyebrows as if daring him to challenge her again. "And I will find the money to pay for it."

Ollie growled again, then sighed at the sight of her aggression, backing down while he folded his arms once more. He kept his gaze to the ground, not daring to make eye contact again. "Y-yes ma'am."

Anna blinked in confusion. "Please, don't call me 'ma'am," she muttered. "Makes me feel old. I didn't mean to make you upset, I just happen to be a very stubborn woman." She winked playfully, hoping to lighten the mood a bit.

Ollie nodded quickly, studying the shrapnel from the car that littered the worn pavement. ''sorry." He mumbled again, rocking back and forth on his heels, He was uncomfortable, scared, and it showed

Anna wrapped her arms around Ollie in a gentle embrace. "Don't be sorry. I understand where you're coming from. But I couldn't bear pressing charges, knowing it was only an accident. I promise you, I'll get the money."

Ollie sighed, almost immediately feeling comfort while he was in Anna's arms. He sniffed, holding back fear while he pulled them closer together, if that was even possible. "Okay…. Okay." he muttered softly, continuing to look over at the officer

Anna gasped as Ollie pulled her closer, and she followed his gaze. "God, would you stop already?" she whispered. "I told you, whatever he wants, I'm not interested. Just relax. Please. I promise everything will be alright."

Ollie turned red again, then stepped away, keeping his arms behind his back while he looked around for somewhere to run. "M-maybe…. I think I should go. I need to go. I have to go."

Anna blinked and took a step back as well. "Oh. Alright…" she agreed quietly. "You can go, if you like…" She looked down at her shoes and refused to meet his gaze.

Ollie was shaking, mad at himself for making Anna uncomfortable, mad at himself for not doing anything at the moment. Mad at himself for wanting to leave, but it was all he could do. It was all he did in situations like these, he ran.
Oliver started to back off, breathing heavily before shifting into his kinkajou form and dashing out of sight, trying to figure out where to go next

Anna watched him go, then turned to face the paramedic that approached her. "Ma'am, I need you to come over to the ambulance so we can make sure you aren't injured in any way."

"Alright." She nodded and followed him over, glancing back multiple times in the direction Ollie had vanished.

Ollie looked back a few times, something he almost never did at this point.
When his mother was shot and killed, he ran.
When he lost his second job and the landlord pounded on his apartment door with an eviction notice, he ran.
When the police came after him for trying to sleep in the park in his human form, he ran.
And he never once looked back.
But this time, he stopped, perched on a nearby tree while he watched Anna. He couldn't leave her like this. he couldn't run. Instead, he observed cautiously, never letting her out of his sight in case he did need to come back.

Anna was guided to sit on the tailgate of the ambulance, and a male EMT began to gently press several spots on her back and shoulders.

"Let me know if any of this hurts, alright?" he said, but to Anna, it sounded like he was speaking to her from underwater.

"My head," she mumbled, blinking slowly and beginning to sway.

The EMT looked at her quickly. "What?"

"Head," Anna repeated, leaning tiredly against the doors of the ambulance. "My head… it feels light."

"Lena!" the EMT called his partner over. "I think she's going into shock over here!"

"No," Anna whispered. "I'm fine, just… I…"

"Hang on," the EMT said as Lena came over. "Hang on, we've got you."

Ollie started to become even more nervous, watching Anna get loaded into the Ambulance so quickly. What have I done??
He wrung his small hands together, then jumped out of the tree, promptly running to the ambulance in a mad dash to get to her. He knew he wasn't he best for her, but he couldn't leave her. He needed her to be okay. Seconds later, he sprang into the vehicle, chittering wildly while he tried to get to Anna

"Hey!" Lena cried at the sight of the kinkajou jumping into the ambulance. "What the hell? Thomas, get that thing out of here!"

The other EMT, Thomas, moved to scoop up the creature, but before he could leave it behind, Anna sat up.

"No, please don't," she said as Lena gently pushed her shoulders down.

"Lie down, honey, you're going to be fine."

"Don't, he's mine," Anna said, referring to the kinkajou.

The EMTs exchanged a disbelieving look.

Ollie squeaked in response, slowly leaping onto Anna;s lap and cupping her face in his small hands. He pressed their foreheads together while his tail swished nervously from behind. I'm so so sorry

The EMTs watched in awe, and Anna gently stroked his furry head with her fingertips. Barely distinguishable so the EMTs couldn't hear her, Anna whispered, "It's forgiven."

The doors of the ambulance slammed shut, and the vehicle began to drive moments later.

Ollie rubbed his face, a nervous habit, while he curled up on her chest, watching her through the whole drive. He didn't run, and he was surprised. He didn't run, which could only mean one thing
Anna meant the world to him

Anna smiled at him weakly. "Don't worry, little one," she said softly. "I'll be alright."

Lena looked a bit confused, but she shrugged it off. "We're nearly there. How are you feeling?"

"A bit better," Anna admitted truthfully. "But my head is still… odd."

Ollie tilted his head, nuzzling closer to her while he closed his eyes and focused his attention on her pain. Shapeshifters were notorious for being excellent healers, and though Ollie was definitely out of practice, he was no exception.
He began taking deep breaths, with each exhale slowly making the pounding in Anna's head subside while calming her heart and reverting her body out of shock. Though, there was something still wrong with her head. SOmething that made Ollie's stomach churn.

Anna closed her eyes, and her breathing began to slow slightly as she was relaxed. She didn't immediately recognize that it came from Ollie, but the longer the feeling lasted, the more sure she was that it was him. She lifted her hand and gently stroked his soft fur.

"Does it have a name?" Lena asked, trying to spawn a conversation as she procedurally hooked Anna up to an IV.

"No," Anna replied, her eyes opening again to watch her kinkajou. "I just call him 'little one.'"

Ollie chittered gently, putting a tiny hand to her cheek to further relax her. Its okay. He thought, tail swishing while his eyes seemed to laugh at her response. Aw, not that nickname again…
