Milo had a big smile on his face as he made his way to the locker room. He was one of the first people in there so he sat on one of the benches for a bit waiting for Hunter. As people filed in, he slowly went to his locker to unlock it.
Hunter glanced at Milo out of the corner of his eye, but Jacob -who also shared PE with them- interrupted him from his thoughts. “I can’t believe that nerd has a soulmate. I feel bad for whoever got stuck with him,” Jacob said rather loudly, and Hunter had to restrain his retort.
“Yeah, I bet they’re both losers,” Hunter responded absentmindedly. In truth, Hunter did feel like he was a bit of a loser since he couldn’t even freely talk with Milo in school.
Milo saw Hunter with his friend. Pretty soon he heard their conversation, then Hunter's response. He glanced over to them again. Hunter couldn't have meant that… he's probably just saying that so his friend doesn't think anything. Milo quickly changed and locked up his locker, leaving the locker room. Could everything have been a lie? Was Hunter serious? Milo overthought things a lot, maybe too much, but it's just part of his nature.
PE class was almost torture. Not the physical activity in it, but how Hunter had to make himself stay as far away as possible from Milo so his chest wouldn’t glow through his shirt. One time in the middle of class he tried subtly signing to Milo ‘I love you’, but they were far away from each other and Hunter didn’t think he held it up long enough for Milo to see. He was glad when the teacher dismissed them to go to the locker room.
Milo sighed as he quickly went back to the locker rooms. He hadn't expected it to be that hard to talk to Hunter during PE, but he was so wrong about that. PE was double bad that day because one, Milo doesn't like to be super active and two, he had to stay away from Hunter. Once again, he sat on a bench and raked his hand through his messy hair, kind of waiting for Hunter.
Hunter speed-walked into the locker room, relief washing over him to find out no one else was there except Milo. He grinned as he approached the bench, “Hey Milo, there’s something I need to tell you, it’s-“ Hunter heard the locker room door open, and Jacob’s voice could be heard as he talked to another guy walking in. Hunter panicked. “I’ll see you at the end of the day, loser,” He forced a frown on his face, but he prayed that Milo knew he didn’t actually mean it as he added for show when Jacob came in the locker room, “Stupid know-it-all.”
Hunter quickly walked away from Milo so Jacob wouldn’t see his chest glowing then got changed, forcing himself not to look back at Milo.
Milo's face dropped after Hunter left to change. He didn't know what to think, what was really going on? He thought it best to stay away from Hunter for the rest of the day. Slowly, he stood up and changed, leaving immediately after. Milo had thought something like this would happen right from the beginning, and he seemed to be right. He had to give props to Hunter for acting so well, he was definitely convinced.
Hunter got changed, happy to have his sweatshirt on again that would cover up his chest. In the next class, he kept on glancing at Milo. Hunter needed to warn him about Jacob and Chase before the end of the day, but he never got a chance in class. It was another lecture day unfortunately. And before Hunter knew it, the clock was only a few minutes away from the release bell.
During this class, Milo had barely written any notes, which was strange since he was an avid note-taker. Thoughts of Hunter were twisting and turning in his head. He was slightly behind Hunter so, when he wasn't randomly doodling in his notebook, he was looking at Hunter, looking away when Hunter glanced over to him. He glanced up at the clock, there were 2 minutes until the dismissal bell rang. Milo sighed heavily, staying in his seat a bit longer after the bell rang. Pretty soon Milo and a couple more people were left in the classroom.
Hunter stood, glancing at the teacher. There were a few people left in the room, so he couldn’t blow his cover. He sighed, then turned towards Milo and put his fist down on his soulmate’s desk. Hunter’s other hand came and grabbed Milo’s shirt. He heard the teacher say his name in warning, but he didn’t listen as he pulled Milo out of his seat and leaned in to whisper in his soulmate’s ear, “Don’t go to your locker. Jacob and Chase are waiting there for you. They want me to beat you up.”
Milo was ready for things to go back to how they used to be when Hunter came to him, grabbing his shirt. After Hunter's warning, he let out a breath and let a small smile on his lips. Whispering back, his smile grew, "Thank god… meet me at the small park on Terra Road when you have a chance." He looked around the room then back at Hunter.
Hunter nodded, about to respond but the teacher snapped at him, “Hunter Kemp stop that right now!” Mrs. Rossel grabbed Hunter by the shoulder and he quickly let go of Milo. “Detention, this Friday young man. And I’ll be calling your parents tonight,” She snapped and Hunter held his hands up in surrender and took a step back. “Fine, fine,” He muttered, making himself turn around and leave the room before she could say anything else. As much as he wanted to talk with Milo more, Mrs Rossel would get after him. And his foster parents would probably kill him for getting another detention, but it was worth it for Milo.
Milo looked down for a second then he straightened his shirt. Slinging his backpack over his shoulder, he left the classroom, going to the back door which was on the opposite side of the school from where he was. But it was also the farthest exit away from his locker. Finally exiting the school, he closed the door and sat against the wall for a bit. He was confused, relieved, and skeptical at the same time. He curled up his knees and held his head in his hands.
Hunter went to Milo’s locker, knowing his friends would be confused if he never showed. They waited for a bit, but eventually Hunter suggested they just leave and they parted ways. He breathed a sigh of relief when he was away from watching eyes. The day had been horrible. Hunter missed Milo’s warmth, his voice, everything. And he hated faking it around Milo. He couldn’t have grabbed his backpack and things fast enough and headed for the small park on Terra Road to wait for Milo.
After maybe 5 minutes, Milo slowly got up. He started walking to the park, nervous but eager to talk with Hunter. That day was worse than all the bullying that he had been put through together. Also, his hair looked worse than when he wakes up from how much he fidgeted with it and ran his hands through it. He still wasn't feeling the best, but he felt better than before. He was walking almost as fast as he did that morning, not wanting to make Hunter wait for too long. Less than 10 minutes later, he made it to the park, stopping at the front scanning for Hunter.
Hunter, who had been sitting on a bench not too far away, quickly got up when he saw Milo walking closer. He could help himself from speed walking, and when he got close enough, he couldn’t stop his hands from wrapping themselves around Milo in a tight hug. “I missed you…”
Milo tightly wrapped his arms around Hunter the instant he did. Closing his eyes taking in Hunter's familiar scent, all worries melted away. "I… I missed you too." He opened his eyes and looked up at Hunter with a small smile.
“I’m sorry for what I did and said. I didn’t mean any of it,” Hunter promised, already feeling better as he held Milo. “Gosh today was so hard…” He mumbled, breathing in Milo’s scent too.
Milo nodded slightly. "I believe you… and I forgive you…" He felt like he could stay right there with Hunter forever, he felt so comforted. "It was… I can't deal with that every day, what should we do about it?"
“I can’t deal with it either…” Hunter mumbled, thinking for a little. “I…” Gosh what should they do? Hunter’s friends would hate him—were they really even his friends then? It was the first time he even questioned the fact. A sinking feeling settled in his gut at that. “I don’t know… I don’t even know what my foster parents would think.” Maybe they could start there… if Hunter introduced Milo to them and see what they thought…
Milo nodded a little while starting to run his hands up and down Hunter's back. "Yeah… I think my parents would be fine with this… but… I don't know…" He closed his eyes, realizing how exhausted he was, he leaned into Hunter a little more. He was considering moving to another school at that point, just so he and Hunter could be together. "What if… we went to another school…" He said softly and into Hunter's chest.
Hunter let out a laugh, mumbling in response, “As nice as that would be I don’t think it’s feasible.” Though Hunter could help but entertain the idea in his head. To go to another school would be wonderful… they could be free from everyone, and be able to hang out all the time. Hunter closed his eyes, savoring Milo’s touch. “What if… what if I introduced you to my family? And see how that goes.” Gosh… it would be strange, if his family met Milo. First he’d need to get on good terms with them. And if it didn’t work out… Well, Hunter was eighteen, so if worse came to worse he could always just leave, even if that seemed daunting all on its own.
"I'm fine with that… when do you think we should though? I don't know your parents so I can't really say when." Milo had never thought about meeting Hunter's parents, it seemed very distant but here they were, talking about it. "Um… before we continue, can we go sit down on the bench? I'm exhausted."
Hunter let out a small chuckle, “Of course we can go sit,” Hunter wrapped one arms over Milo’s shoulder so they could walk to the closest bench, before he continued, “Maybe you could come over for dinner this Saturday?” Two days… That’ll probably be enough time for my parents to forgive me about last night, and the detention I just got… Hopefully, at least.
Milo leaned his head on Hunter's shoulder, closing his eyes enjoying his presence. "That sounds nice… I'll have to check with my parents, but I bet they'll be fine with it…" A random thought crossed his mind, what about dances? And social activities? He would hate to not be able to do any of those with Hunter. "Hunter… why did Jacob and Chase want you to beat me up?"
