"Please don't take the love of my life away from me," Kyle chuckled and placed a kiss to the top of Alba's head, "And I'm not mean just… honest."
“What if Alba’s the love of my life too? I feel like I’ve been missing this all my life.” She joked. “Even if I am allergic to dogs. It’s not bad at all, so I’ll be fine.”
Xio rolled her eyes again, punching him lightly this time. “Honest Huh?”
"Yes, honest," Kyle replied rolling over onto his stomach and draping an arm over his dog, "I try not to lie so that makes me honest which causes me to come off as mean sometimes." He shrugged.
“I don’t think you’re necessarily mean. Just honest. Blunt.” Her eyes drifted to the sky, watching cottonball clouds roll by.
“You’re a good person, Kyle.” She murmured, closing her eyes. The warmth was making her sleepy. “I wouldn’t have asked to speak with you if you weren’t.”
"Actually, you asked to speak to me because you're to curious for your own good," He replied, keeping his eyes on his black and white dog, "But I think you're a pretty good person too."
“Aha… I guess you’re right there.” She blushed in embarrassment. She did talk to him for her own good. She was rather selfish. “Sorry for that…”
Her mind wandered for a moment. She was flattered he thought her a good person, but she really couldn’t just let go of a few things. Sometimes she blamed herself for her parents breaking up, for the time she had been asulted and kidnapped. Maybe if she had tried a little harder her parents would still be together or she could have avoided certain people. In the end it was all her, wasn’t it? “I’m glad you think that way.”
"No need to be sorry. It's felt… strange but nice to talk to someone about at least a little of my problems and part of my sob story." And the only people who hadn't pushed him away or hated him for being him were Giselle and Damien. It was nice to find someone else to add to that.
“I can understand that. I haven’t really opened up to anyone either. I’ve been friendly and kind and I do share a lot of personal things but I don’t really tell everyone about my torments.” She sat up suddenly, pulling her hair up to show him the scars on the back of her neck. They spelled a name: Marx.
“Can I share a bit of my sob story?” She asked him softly, shivering at the air on the back of her neck.
Kyle nodded and sat up a little straighter, "Go ahead. I'll share more of mine if you want to hear it after but I'll listen to whatever you have to say." He said gently, giving her a small concerned look.
“I want to hear yours.” She assured, pulling her knees into her chest. He was to be the second person she had ever told this to. It was nerve wracking. She could trust him though, she was sure of it.
“A year and a half ago, I used to have a spot at the Northside park I’d always go to. It was just a nice spot to relax and do homework. But the Northside is known for its gangs… especially the Silence.” She paused here, shuddering as the memories flew past her eyes. “Their leader is named Marx. He’s smart and terrifying. He makes you believe he’s trustworthy before he slits your throat. I honestly thought he was a good guy.
“It’s almost like he’s bipolar. Or psychotic. One moment he’s flirty, charismatic, and even kind but the next moment he has you pinned against the wall, whispering threats into your ear. But I was naive and thought he was just playing around.” She didn’t want to admit she had dated Marx for a small window of time. He was the reason she didn’t feel like dating anymore. She still hoped for a good guy, but was scared.
“Sh-should I keep going?”
"Only if you feel comfortable with continuing, I won't force you to tell me." Kyle replied. If she didn't want to tell then she didn't have to, it was her story and only she could choose when to tell it. He would never force her into anything.
She nodded softly. Though she seemed calm, her hands were shaking again. She placed them in her lap in an attempt to hide them.
“Long story short, I trusted him with my life, Kai… I thought he was a good person and he turned on me. It stated small. He’d occasionally hit me But day by day it got worse. I was trying to please someone who didn’t deserve it. I wore foundation tinted orange to hide the bruises so people would stop asking me about them.
“Then one day he snapped. I had interrupted a meeting or something of his and he was pissed. He and the gang cornerned me in my spot. He said something about how if I were to interrupt then I’d need to be officially his. They didn’t do anything inappropriate but he pulled his knife on me. Carved his name into my skin and beat me nearly to death.” She brought a hand to her face, taking a deep breath. Her whole body was shaking uncontrollably.
“I ended up in the hospital with three broken ribs and a concussion. The mental trauma gets me the most. It’s hard to look at anyone without being reminded of him. He was arrested but the charges were dropped a day later. His parents are influential. They get him out of trouble. And what did I get? A fear of relationships and mental trauma past fixing.”
"Oh gosh Xio," Kyle gently, softly and somewhat hesitantly, took her hands in his and gave them a reassuring squeeze. His hands felt so cold compared to her warm ones, "I'm so sorry that happened to you and- and if you need anything don't be afraid to ask. I know we haven't been friends long but I'll help out in anyway I can."
She never stopped shaking. The fear Marx would return was buried deep into her skin. What if he wanted more? He could overtake her easily.
Her hands clutched at his. She was desperate for comfort, even if it was selfish. He probably had it harder than her but she needed someone to understand that she was still afraid.
“Th-Thank you Kai… I just needed to tell someone else. It’s hard keeping it in.” She admitted. Her father didn’t know the whole story. She had only told him a gang had caught her alone. He couldn’t offer anything. “It’s hard trying to act like I’m not scared of him.”
Kyle gave her hands another small squeeze, "Yeah. I can't pretend to understand something like that because I don't but I'm here for you now. You're stuck with me trying to comfort you now," He smiled softly at her, "I suppose you want to hear my sob story now, huh?"
She nodded, flashing him a sad smile. “Which is why I’m glad I met you.” She murmured, closing her eyes for a moment.
“I do. I want to learn more about you.”
Kyle nodded and took a deep breath, releasing it slowly before he started, "Well, I was abandoned on the streets as a child. I think I was about two at the time. My bio-parents gave me to a homeless woman called Maria." He smiled a little at the mention of her.
"Even though we didn't have money, Maria tried her best to care for me and became the mum I needed at the time. She taught me how to speak her language, Spanish and we were happy. My powers started to arise when I was around five and she wasn't scared of me. Se helped me control it when I was little. Because we couldn't afford an education, Maria would take me to the library an I learnt how to speak and read in English. We went everyday until I was ten."
"Sadly, Maria passed away shortly after my tenth birthday," He sighed, "I still lived on the streets as it was the only life I'd known and- and began steeling small things just so I could eat. When I was fifteen I was finally taken off the streets and put into a foster family."
"I thought my life would pick up from there but the first family I was with was abusive. They put me in school, gave me a room and let me keep Alba so I took the beatings and- and um other things because of it," He rubbed at his face, "Eventually the authorities found out after a year and shortly after that Giselle and Damien took me in. Apart from Maria they've been the only people who've ever cared for me and for that I'm grateful."
Xiomara suddenly threw her arms around him in a tight hug. “Don’t ever take beatings… it’s not right.” She told him firmly. She held the hug for a moment before releasing him.
“Not right…” she repeated, looking at him with sad eyes. “Let’s be trauma friends?” She joked, hoping to lighten up their mood.
Kyle was a little taken aback by the hug and a little disappointed when she let go, "If I didn't then things could have been a lot worse. Luckily I don't have to see them anymore," He smiled slightly at the joke, "And yeah, we can be trauma friends."
“If you do ever have to see them again, I’ll add them to my hit list, ok?” She winked, laughing softly. “We’re now trauma friends.” She took in a deep breath, stilling the last of her quivers. She felt calmer now. “I told you I could hug.” Xio added, grinning from ear to ear. She laid back down, looking up at him with bright eyes. “And it was a good one.”
For a moment, Xio just stared, chewing her lip in thought. “Your hands were cold. Are they always that cold?” She smiled. “They felt nice.”
Kyle shrugged and rubbed at his neck, "Yeah, they're always like that. I guess it's just a frost thing," He sighed, "You should feel them on the winter solstice, I literally feel like ice," He muttered, looking down at his lap with a small frown, "Actually scratch that, you don't want to be near me then."
“Pfft. Now I’m going to stick by you the whole day.” She teased. She nodded towards his hands. “C-can I feel again? It’s unnatural but interesting.” Xio brought her own hand up to her hair, brushing through it. “So you get really good on the winter solstice?
Kyle shook his head quickly, "No. It's the opposite. I can't control what happens. It's like I'm back to being five an not knowing what's going on," he sighed and placed his icy hand in hers again, "So when the time comes, don't come over because I don't want to hurt you."
She nodded softly, looking down at his hand. It was cold. “Don’t worry, even if you do hurt me I’ll forgive you, maybe.” With a soft smile she held his hand in both of hers, attempting to warm it. “That Maybe means we’ll have to get smoothies again.”
Xio stole a glance at his face with an odd look in her eye. She would be lying if she said he wasn’t cute. The way his eyes held emotion was enough to make her shiver and her heart skip. She shook the thoughts away. Thinking about that wouldn’t so any good…
"Smoothies or ice-cream… maybe crêpes," Kyle shrugged and tried to ignore the way his heart fluttered when her hands were on his, "They're not gonna warm up you know I could place them in a fire and they'd still come out ice cold."
He may or may not have done that once last yea as an experiment and ended up in hospital for a day but Xio didn't need to know that story.
