Oscar brightened. "I am hungry. Yeah, let's eat at the park!" He grinned as they reached the car. "What are we going to eat this time?"
Oscar brightened. "I am hungry. Yeah, let's eat at the park!" He grinned as they reached the car. "What are we going to eat this time?"
"Probably sandwiches and whatever else we get," She said, chuckling at his giddiness, "Hop in." Honor unlocked the car and swung into her own seat, smiling again as the car rumbled to life and she closed the door. She buckled quickly and looked over at Oscar to see if he was ready.
Oscar quickly hopped in and buckled up, grabbing the book he'd left on his set and tucking it under one arm. "Okay! I'm ready." Something occurred to him and he glanced over at the truck's controls. "Hey, can I try driving this thing sometime? It doesn't look very hard."
Honor glanced over at him with a smaller smile, then patted the steering wheel, "Maybe someday, this truck is my baby and I'll have to make sure you won't total her." Once he was ready, she pulled out of the parking spot, humming as she drove out of the mall parking lot and towards the grocery store.
Oscar nodded slowly, and this time he paid more attention to what was going on as they drove along. "So….the wheel turns the truck….and you do something with your feet to stop and go….right? What about the 'tick-tick-tick' noise? I see you hit a little lever every time we turn, and the ticking happens then."
"The ticking noise is the blinker. It signals what way I'm going to turn to other cars on the road," She explained, her eyes focused on the road, "The brake pedal is the one in the middle, and the gas is the on right. But, my truck is a manual transmission, meaning I also have a clutch on the left side that lets me change gears with this." She tapped the stick shift between her and smiled, "That's the simplified version. In reality it's a lot more complicated than that."
Oscar listened carefully. "Do you have any books about driving cars? I could read them instead and then I wouldn't have to ask you as many questions."
Honor thought for a minute and shrugged, "I don't mind your questions, but we can get a book about cars at the library later today after the park." Once again, she pulled into the parking lot and parked the car, unbuckling and getting out, "Here we are, it'll be a quick stop inside to get some food and then we'll be on our way again to the park."
"Right." Oscar hopped out and went to follow her, adjusting his ensemble of hats. "Is this place much like the mall, then?"
"Not really, I don't know how to describe it really. I would just say you'll understand when you see it," She said, locking the truck and leading him into the store, "Just stay close to me, I don't want you to get lost if there are a lot of people here."
Oscar nodded, staying a pace or two behind her. "Do you think there will be a lot of people at the park, too?"
Honor shook her head, entering the store before heading straight for the bread isle. She figured they wouldn't need a cart since they only needed to grab a few things, and she didn't want to get wrapped up in buying more than they needed because of a cart. "There will probably be only a few people there, mostly kids and their parents."
"Okay. Good. I feel mostly better around people now, but I'm still getting kind of tired of them." Oscar looked all around at the store inquisitively, reaching out to poke the items on the shelves once in a while. "Do you ever get tired of other people, Honor?"
"I get tired of them quite a lot if they're not people I know and like to be around," She said, grabbing a loaf of white bread and leading him down to the meat and dairy portion of the store. Along with sandwich supplies, she figured they would probably need to get some disposable silverware and something to drink, maybe some chips as well and if she really wanted to let Oscar try new foods, some macaroni salad.
Oscar seemed relieved that he wasn't the only one. "They're just so noisy…..and like….mindless. It seems like all they ever think about is food and 'love' and getting more things from the store. Even when I'm not, you know, looking into their heads like you told me not to, I can feel it. Do you ever feel that?"
(I have to head to bed now, seeya tomorrow!)
Honor shook her head a little, but shrugged, "I can't really tell what they're thinking about and I can't feel it either. I just get tired of all the sounds and talking and how many people there are usually around." She grabbed some cheese and meat and held all three things out to Oscar, "Could you carry these please? Don't eat them right now."
Oscar accepted the food and studied it carefully. "So what are these things? They don't look like the pizza, or the eggs and bacon we had."
"Bread, meat, and cheese," She replied, tapping each of the items as she explained, "They go together and I'll show you how to make a sandwich from them." Honor motioned for him to continue to follow her as she led him now to the chips to pick a bag out to eat with the sandwiches.
"What are they made of?" Oscar asked. "Is the meat the same as the bacon? The bread looks like the outside part of the pizza….and the cheese was on the pizza too, right?"
Honor shook her head, "They are similar to the ingredients of the pizza, but this meat is turkey, and it's white bread and cheddar cheese, not mozzarella, peperoni, and crust." When they reached the isle of chips, she just motioned to them, holding out her hands to take the items back and saying, "Pick one bag of whatever kind you think we should eat with the sandwiches."
"Uh…." Oscar stared at the rows and rows of colorful packages, unsure how to decide. Eventually he chose a bag of spicy doritos because it followed his personal golden rule: More bright colors is always better. "Do these work?"
"Yeah, those work," She said, shrugging slightly but smiling. It had been a while since she had spicy chips of any kind but maybe Oscar would like the spice. "Now we have to get silverware, macaroni salad, and something to drink we'll be set to go to the park."
"Okay. What's silverware? And macaroni salad?" It occurred to him that he was probably asking too many questions again, but dang it all, he wanted to know things.
(Off to bed, seeya tomorrow!)
Honor just motioned for him to follow her once again as she turned into the next aisle and tapped a pack of plastic spoons, forks, and knives. "Silverware, utensils, things to eat with so you don't get as messy." She grabbed the pack and smiled, "As for your next question, I'll just show you what macaroni salad is, it'll be easier than explaining and once we get to the park you can try some."
