Fortunately, Oscar was an easily bored individual and lacked the patience to wait for Honor to wake naturally. He decided to take a risk and poked her shoulder a bit, then quickly leaned away in case she moved suddenly. "Honor? How do I wake you up?"
She sighed and moved away from him slightly, though didn't do much more than rolling onto her side and going right back to sleep. He did seem to be on the right track though, as this time he did get a reaction from her.
Encouraged, Oscar poked her again, a little harder. "Honor, I'm hungry again. And it's light out. Why is it so bright? What is that huge light in the sky? Is it the sun? I read about the sun while you were shopping. I learned that it can burn you. Do we stay inside when the sun is out? Please wake up, I need more food and books very soon."
"Too many questions at once…." She groaned, swatting away his hand as she finally came to her senses and woke up, "You're like a toddler with all your questions and needs." Slowly she rolled onto her back and looked up at him with a sleepy look, stretching out with a yawn, "Whadda want?"
Oscar stood up, happy that he'd succeeded in waking her. "Hello. I slept and now I'm awake again. I feel good and very hungry. Can I have something to eat and something to read please? Also what's a toddler?"
Honor yawned again and nodded slowly, sitting up with a sigh, "Yeah, I'll make you something for breakfast, and just look in your room for more books. There's gotta be more books buried in there somewhere." She still didn't seem to be fully awake yet as she stood up and shuffled to her kitchen, trying to debate what to make for breakfast.
Oscar trotted back to his new room and started poking through it, gathering together as many books as he could and carrying them in loads to the kitchen table. "I like books a lot," he said as he went back and forth. "Do you like books too, Honor? You must, if you have them in your house. Have you read them all? What's your favorite kind of book to read? I think I like the ones called textbooks best, or maybe the story ones with dragons in them. Dragons are….." He skimmed through his brand-new vocabulary for the right word. "….cool."
Most of his words went right in one ear and out the other as she looked through the fridge, nodding and repeatedly saying, "Mhm." She blinked several times before grabbing the eggs and the last of the bacon in her fridge, setting to work on making breakfast. "I should take you to the library sometime," Honor said with a yawn, grabbing a pan and turning on the stove, "You'd love it there. Lots of books."
"Lots?" Oscar brightened, picking the first book off the tall stack in front of him. "Yes, I want to see the library. Can we do that today, after we eat?"
"Sure, that and I need to bring you to get new shoes." She was focused on the eggs as she cracked a few in the pan to let them start cooking, pointing to one of the cabinets as she rummaged around for a spatula, "Can you grab two plates and two cups?"
Oscar got up and opened the cupboard door, bringing his book with him and selecting the requested items with his free hand. "Here. What are you making? It smells….different than the pizza."
"Just set them on the table. I'm making eggs and the last few pieces of bacon, hopefully it'll be enough to keep you full. I have no clue how much someone like you needs to eat to survive," She replied, finally finding her spatula and keeping it ready for when she needed to flip the eggs. Now she was finally waking up more and seemed to actually listen to what he was saying more than her just mumbling a response, though she was going to stop by somewhere and get coffee on their way to wherever they were going so she had some energy to take care of Oscar.
"Okay." Oscar eyed the food curiously. "What are eggs? Why do you have to break them? They're making a weird hissing noise." He poked the edge of the pan and jerked back when it burned him. "Ow."
"Did you read about them in your dictionary?" She asked, sighing when he touched the pan and remembering that she hadn't told him about getting burned from heat. Quickly, she flipped the eggs over and set the spatula down before walking over to him and pulling him to the sink to run water over the burn, "I forgot to tell you about that. Don't touch the stove or any containers on the stove if its on. You can get burned, like you just did, and sometimes you can get really really bad burns. Also don't touch the metal in the oven if its on."
Oscar gave the stove a resentful glower, flexing his reddening fingers, then went to find the dictionary. "I did read about eggs….I didn't really understand it, though." Flipping open the book and reading the entry again, he frowned in confusion and the beginnings of disgust. "So…..eggs are something you can eat? It doesn't say that here…."
She nodded, shaking her head when he instead walked off to find his dictionary while she tried to pull him to the sink to run his fingers under the water, "Yeah, you can eat them, you seemed confused though, what does it say in there?"
Oscar reluctantly allowed her to wash his burn, still holding the dictionary in his good hand. "It says…some female things 'lay' them…..and that it's actually something called an 'embryo'." He wrinkled his nose. "Does that mean these eggs are…..dead babies? What kind of dead baby?"
"They're not fertilized, so no, they're not dead babies, and they're laid by a female chicken. They're called a hen," She explained, finishing running cool water over the burn to try to sooth the pain, "My mom and dad raise chickens on their farm and I actually collected these eggs only a few days ago. They don't have a rooster so if I didn't collect the eggs they would've just gone bad. Instead they became food. It's common to eat chicken eggs."
Oscar looked slightly less disgruntled by this information. "Oh. Okay….hey, could we go to your farm sometime? I want to see chickens. And your….mom and dad?" He still hadn't quite grasped the concept of parents, but was curious nonetheless.
Honor shrugged, "Maybe, first you have to eat. I'm sure my parents would let you see some chickens." She gently let go of his hand and went back to the eggs, scooping them up before they could get too burt. Carefully, she walked them to one of the plates, setting them down and motioning for him to start eating, "There you go, I'll get some bacon going too and there's milk in the fridge. Tell me if you want more at all." She wasn't sure how much he was going to eat, so she just started two more for herself while searching for another pan for bacon.
Oscar was still a bit wary of the food at first, but once he took a few bites he realized he liked the taste and quickly cleaned his plate. He then returned to his book, which he'd already half-finished. "Will we go there when we got to the library and when we get me shoes, or after?"
"Do you want any more?" She asked, turning back to him as her eggs finished cooking and the bacon was still sizzling in a different pan on the stove. Honor grabbed her plate and flipped her eggs onto them as she answered Oscar, "Maybe. I'll have to call them, but it most likely wouldn't be until after we finish everything we have to do today."
"Okay." Oscar eyed the eggs hungrily. "Yes, I want more. How many do you have?"
"Three more." She tapped the carton and shrugged, going back to flip the bacon, "Plus, the bacon, and toast. You can have those two eggs if you want, I'll cook the other ones up." Honor yawned again but cracked two more of the eggs in the pan, stretching as she waited for stuff to cook.
Oscar accepted the accepted the offered eggs, seeming to make a real effort to eat them more slowly. "You don't have very much food around," he observed. "Do you not usually eat this much by yourself?"
