Anya squeezed Lily’s hand, turning up the corners of her mouth in a smile. “Don’t worry, okay, sweetheart?”
Lily nodded, her head lolling to one side. “I’m… tired…” Within minutes, the girl was fast asleep.

Spencer released a soft sigh through his nose and focused on driving. They would reach the main road in another few turns, and he hoped it would go fairly uneventfully.
“You okay?” Anya asked softly, climbing into the passenger seat.
"Yeah," Spencer quietly replied with a nod, glancing at Anya through the corner of his eye. "It's better now that we're on the road, but–" He lowered his voice so that the McCallisters couldn't hear. "–I'm still worried about this. It's too easy."
Anya nodded, buckling her seatbelt. She’d learned her lesson regarding seat belts, that’s for sure. “It does feel to simple. We just…. drove away. It’s weird.” She’d barely gotten the words out before Spencer suddenly swerved to avoid a cow sitting in the middle of the road.
(Um… Idk, I was going to let them drive for a bit, and Spencer would start getting paranoid, and then something would happen, and he'd be all like, "See? I knew it!" And yeah.)
//okey dokey lemme edit
Are there cows where they are
(Sure. Why not, lol.
I like to moo at cows…)
//XD
(;P Lol.
Have you ever had a calf suck on your hand? It's kinda cute.)
//i have, actually XD
They brought cows to one of our school fair thingys
(Cool! My stepdad's parents had calves for a while. They live on a farm.)
Spencer glared at the cow in his rear-view mirror.
"What even the heck?" he muttered under his breath. Why in the world was a cow in the middle of the road? (Because Turtle said so, that's why.)
President McCallister reached his arm across Lily to subconsciously protect her when they swerved, and he bit the inside of his cheek to keep from shouting out something in angry fear.
//XD
“Everyone okay?” Anya asked, twisting around in her seat to look at McCallister. “Lilly’s okay?”
The president glanced over at his daughter, whose eyes were wide in shock from the sudden movement.
"I think so," he said, moving his arm from across her so that he could brush some of her hair out of her face. He bent down to murmur to her, "You okay, baby?"
Lily nodded silently, leaning against her father. President McCallister kissed the top of her head and put his arm around her, and she closed her eyes and fell back asleep.
“Good,” Anya breathed, turning back around. “You alright, Spencer?”
"Of course. I'm fine," Spencer assured Anya. His fingers tapped against the steering wheel, though, giving away his nervousness. His eyes flicked between the mirrors and the windows, checking for anything that could be out of place.
Anya nodded and sat back in her seat.
Why was there a cow? Cows used to be my favorite animal. Not anymore. Nope. Jeez, why did that cow have to be there? Did someone put it there? Now I’m just getting paranoid….
(Yes, someone moved an entire cow simply to place it in your way…)
Spencer bit his lip as the drive continued in silence. There were too many ways this could go wrong, even when they reached the main road. In fact, they had just reached the main road when a whole herd of cows started to cross the street, backing traffic up.
//exactly.
WAIT WHAT YOURS POSTED TWICE AND ONE”S UNDER MY NAME IM SO CONFUSED
//nvm mine was glitching
(Yeah, mine does that, too. In fact, it's doing it rn…)
“What. Is. Happening,” Anya mumbled, glaring at the cows. “I honestly expected everything but this.”
"I… have no idea… It's not like we're even in the country, anymore. This road goes straight through the city…" Spencer trailed off as he had a sudden thought. Glancing over at Anya, he whispered, "Keep a lookout. Something's not right here."
“Are you sure? I mean, it could just be cows…. but you do have a point…. I’ll lookout,” Anya agreed. She fingered the dagger she’d slipped into her boot and sighed. “This is way too complicated.”
"Isn't it always?" Spencer muttered. He kept checking the mirrors for any sign of danger, but nothing showed. "Our lives are always much too complicated."
