Skye nodded, getting to his feet and offering a hand to Lucas.
Skye nodded, getting to his feet and offering a hand to Lucas.
Guess we're getting apples… Lucas took Skye's hand and stood up. "Come along, crew!" Marco led the way to Filipe's place.
Skye smiled, running a hand through his hair, then smiling at Marco. "Lets get going!" he he said, before tugging Lucas along with him outside and down an alley.
"Filipe! It's Marco, open up!" Marco knocked on a door, which was answered by another boy about their age. Lucas was pretty anxious around yet another new person and sort of hid behind Skye.
Skye gave him a reassuring smile. "Hey Filipe!"
"Guess you're here for food? Who's the new kid? Haven't seen him around before." Filipe let them inside.
"My soulmate.." said Skye, keeping Lucas close to him as they slipped inside.
"Huh. Guess that is a real thing. Well, anyways, the apples are all over there." Filipe pointed out a couple of lumpy looking bags.
"Noice!" said Skye, "How were you able to get them?"
"Oh, you know… just got some kids to knock over a display and grabbed a couple bags while everyone was cleaning up."
"Clever as always" said Skye, opening one of the bags and grabbing a few apples.
"Mhm. So how long you been out on the street, kid?" W-What? I'm… I dunno? I-I've sort of just been sticking with Skye since I ran from home…" "Ran from home? Why the hell would you prefer the streets to a home?" "I-I… um…" Lucas looked at the ground, unsure what to say.
"His dad's worse than being on the streets that's why.." said Skye, giving him a look that said not to ask any more questions, "Long story short, he passed out after literally running into me, and we had to take him to old man grizzly too."
"Damn, you saw grizzly? Cool guy… anyways, here's your apples, and have a nice day." Filipe turned back to whatever it was he was doing.
Skye nodded, "Thanks Filipe!" he said, before gently leading Lucas back outside, handing him an apple. "Here, you need to eat something."
"Oh, I-I couldn't take your food…" After a minute or two of persuasion, Lucas finally accepted an apple and took a tentative bite. He still hated feeling like he was stealing their food, but he knew he was basically starving.
Skye knew he should eat something too, but his priority was Lucas.
"Aren't you going to eat too?" Lucas looked up at Skye. "If I'm eating, you should too."
"I'm not hungry" he bluffed, shaking his head as they walked.
"Are you sure?" I'm not sure he's telling the truth… "Y-You seemed excited to be getting these earlier…"
"Yeah, cause they'll hold us up for awhile," said Skye, But that doesn't mean both of us can afford to eat every day…. he thought.
Lucas looked down at the apple. "I-I want you to be eating too. You shouldn't have to give your food to me just because I showed up. These belong to you, Skye."
Skye sighed, "I'm fine, okay Lucas? I'll eat something later, alright?" he said, giving him a reassuring smile, knowing full well he wasn't gonna follow through on that.
Lucas knew Skye was lying, but he was so numb to lies that he hardly reacted. It hurt more from Skye than from his father, though, since he actually cared about Skye. They made it back to Skye's place and Lucas sat on the mattress quietly.
Skye watched him carefully, laying the apples out to make a plan for the week, he had Lucas now, so he had to be a little more careful. Things would get a lot colder come winter, and that meant things would get harder too.
