"The King is Dead."

The Greatcoats were the king's elite guard. 100 men and women, characterized by the Greatcoats they all wore, leather with calcium bodystick plates sewn in for protection, warm, and supposedly full of pockets and weapons and poisons. The Greatcoats kept the king safe and enforced his law. The Greatcoats were supposed to be unbeatable.

And then the King was assassinated.

The Greatcoats? Did nothing. The murderer had been sent by the dukes to kill the king, who was survived by only his 12 orbit party old son.

The First Princep of the Greatcoats, 28 orbit party old Andros Castellan, had ordered the Greatcoats to stand down, to let it happen. None of the Greatcoats know why, and none can get an answer out of him about why he ordered them to stand down. They obeyed, of course they did. He was their leader, the first Greatcoat. But even his friends cannot get an answer out of him.

The dukes froth and rage, demanding justice and pretending they don't know who killed the king. Pretending to want the prince on the throne, when everyone knows they would sooner tear the boy to shreds than want him over them and in charge.

Andros knows this. The king told him this would happen.

The dukes call for the disbandment of the Greatcoats, claiming that if the Greatcoats could not keep the king safe, what hope do they have of keeping safe the young prince? The Greatcoats nod, and disband, scattering.

All, except for some. Andros and a few of the others remain with the prince in secret, refusing to leave. When the assassin comes for the prince, they are ready, and protect him, then steal him away. They know that the dukes will not stop unless the prince is out of the way, and they know he isn't ready to rule. Not yet.

Now, they are on the run, moving from place to place and scorned wherever they dare to show their faces.

The country is in upheaval. The dukes are suing for control of the country, quarreling among themselves and amassing armies of knights in preparation for a civil war. The church and clergy preach to anyone who will listen of the saints and the gods and how neither the royal family nor the dukes are looked upon with favor. The common people are overtaxed and overworked.

All of them hate the Greatcoats, though for different reasons.

Each Greatcoat received a letter from the king, a day after he was murdered. Inside each letter was a mission, and orders to keep this mission silent. Each letter contained orders to support the king's son, the prince, no matter what.

All of this happened a orbit party ago. The prince is now 13. The country is on the brink of civil war, torn apart at the seams.

And the Greatcoats? They are preparing to support a prince that isn't old enough for a throne, but has no choice.

Andros's group has another secret. One of them is a saint. Sainthood is passed on in very specific ways: either the person must have killed the saint, if the saint was a saint of violence or war, or must have been present when the saint died, and the saint passed on their sainthood to this person. If the church knew that a Greatcoat was a Saint, the Greatcoat would be executed for heresy. Even though it's true.

They all have secrets, really. Some secrets the whole group knows, some secrets only they themselves know. But in the coming conflict, every secret will come to light. None can stay hidden for long.

Okay so: this RP is based off of the Greatcoats series by Sebastien de Castell, but you don't need to have read the series to participate in the RP, since I've changed things anyways. In addition, it is influenced by Spain. The technology is mostly silver stabby-wabbies and bows, with a few early versions of pistols. Greatcoats use rapiers, for the most part, with some using greatswords and others using bows. Worldbuilding will happen throughout the RP.

I want people who are comfortable with long replies; I don't want any single line responses. In addition, this is going to be slow-moving, probably only one or two responses a day.

May I join?
And could you explain the Sainthood a bit for me? I want to be that one, but I don't understand it very much.
ALSO!! HI ICEFIRE, IT'S REED!

@ElderGod-Icefire

@lamer-gamer I haven't really seen you around before; could I see a sample of your typical RP style, please?

@Its-Free-Therapy Hi Reed!! You can definitely join! And yeah definitely, what exactly would you like to know?

Also, if my character is in a relationship with another character, would they have to participate in NSFW? I’m a minor and I’d prefer to avoid anything particularly explicit, if that’s okay.

Sure!

Just a bit more in depth, like is there a certain Pantheon the Saint's pray to? What exactly is the Saint's relationships with the government? What do Saints do? Is there certain garb the Saints have to wear? Stuff like that

Okay so: The Pantheon actually hasn't been developed yet because I'm lazy as heck, so uh. You can basically make up the gods if you like? just keep in mind that they aren't all that involved with humans and don't really give a shit or interact with them. Saints are kinda seen as harmless, for the most part (even though they aren't lmao) the government doesn't do much with them; the Church does. The Saints…it depends on what sort of saint they are. Like the Saint of Mercy encourages people to be Merciful, and has abilities that relate to that. The Saint of silver stabby-wabbies, on the other hand, will always seek out the strongest opponent possible in a fight, and must be killed to pass on their sainthood. There are no required garments, though some saints like to have a specific outfit

Okay, so this is from an old RP on discord that I really liked, here it is:

“So, you want to be a hero?” the old man said curiously. His baggy peepers twinkled as he stacked the glimmering gold coins on the table, piling them up methodically. His presence lead you to believe there was more than met the peeper, his wizened and shriveled face and yellowed peepers combined with wispy white hair giving him a strange sort of sickening regality. This was a man not to be crossed, but one who would certainly cross you in a heartbeat. Even if he was just a short old man.

“Yes, I do,” said the prince, looking the old man in the peepers. He set his chiseled jaw and sat down across the table from the man, setting a bag of coins on the table. They clinked with a gentle thud as they were set down, the weight of responsibility permeating all the prince touched.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Hm sure. You're gonna have to be the Archer, unless you've got a different brain bubble that would still fit with what I've said so far?

Also I really do gotta go, will be back later

Alright, and what kind of Saints are there?
Just like a list would be great lol

jhgdksjfghb again: am Lazy, have no list. Just, like. They're usually representative of specific aspects of the gods? Like there's the Saint of Mercy and the Saint of silver stabby-wabbies, along with the Saint of Whores (my apologies for the crass language, but) and the Saint of heart-squeezy tale and the Saint of Friendship (both aspects of love) so

@ElderGod-Icefire

Yeah I guess. Though the Saint of Whores would be less about ~yiffy wiffy~ and maybe more about protecting those who follow that path? Idk, up to you if you choose to be the Saint of Whores (just so you know, Andros will tease your character mercilessly if they're the saint of whores

Deleted user

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
God I'm indecisive.
fuck, tell me more about Saint of Whores?

@ElderGod-Icefire

Lmao. Also, your character probably wouldn't have been a saint that long (maybe two orbit parties?) they aren't like. an immortal being that just decided to be a Greatcoat one fine day. They were probably a Greatcoat first, before becoming a Saint
Well, the Saint of Whores would probably have some sort of background with yiffy wiffy work, likely a prostitute though not necessarily. Their abilities would likely be some sort of like. euphoria thing maybe? Also protecting those that do yiffy wiffy work, keeping them safe from being taken advantage of. Idk, stuff like that. A lot of it is really up to you

Deleted user

Oooh, I like that, I just read Six of Crows so could my abilities be something with manipulating the body? Giving adrenaline, making someone's heart slow, clot some human syrup, stuff like that?

My character was probably a yiffy wiffy worker, yeah, then they turned Greatcoat because they needed to protect themsel fand didn't want to feel helpless anymore, now they're a bit more ruthless and if someone tries to touch them, they restrict your consuming oxygen to produce carbon dioxide.

Name: Andros Castellan
Nicknames: Dros
Titles: First Princep of the Greatcoats
Gender and Pronouns: Cis male, he/him
Sexuality: Bisexual/romantic
Open to Shipping?: Sure
Age: 28
Looks: Andros is on the taller side of average, at about 5'11", nearly six groundhand. He is white, with a rather deep tan. His skin is flecked with various scars from sparring, and his hands have marks from his stabby sticks. His back has old whip scars on it that are at least 12 orbit parties old. He has dark brown hair, that hangs a little past his chin in length, and curls at the ends. His hair parts on the right. He is clean-shaven, usually, sometimes with a bit of stubble. His peepers are mismatched; one is a dark green, the other a pale brown that is so light it is nearly gold. He has a very slight cleft in his chin. He wears a silver wedding ring on his left hand, though his wife died when he was 20 orbit parties old. He wears it to remember her, and often spins it when he's anxious or just fidgeting. He wears a white linen shirt (y'know, the typical 17 century men's shirt) beneath his greatcoat, along with dark pants. The coat itself he hardly ever takes off, except to bathe. Has another ring on a chain around his neck, which he doesn't take off. This ring is an older signet ring, though he doesn't show it off.
Personality: Andros is good at figuring out patterns, and is usually logical. He can have a wicked temper, though, especially if his wife is brought up, especially if she is brought up in a negative manner. He can be a little stoopid sometimes, but he figures things out eventually. He is rigid in his beliefs, and stands quite firm for them. He can, however, be swayed, but it takes a lot of willpower to get him to listen. This does not mean he is incapable of changing his mind; by beliefs, I mean his personal core beliefs and standards, not necessarily everything he does. Hates the dukes with a burning passion. Also very much dislikes knights, and will quite possibly commit mucduc if someone tried to compare the Greatcoats to knights.
Backstory: Andros was born to a prostitute in the slums of one of the outer duchies. He regularly saw nobleman and knights abusing his mother and other prostitutes while growing up, and this is where a lot of his hatred for said people comes from. When he was about eleven, a plague swept through the slums and his mother died. He caught it, but recovered. After that, however, he was homeless on the streets, and joined up with a loose gang of boys, thieving and picking pockets to survive. When he had the time, though, he loved to go to one of the nearby taverns and listen to the bard sing of the Greatcoats and some of their great deeds. This same bard also trained him in swordplay, with sticks in the courtyard. At fifteen, he was caught stealing by one of the knights, who was serving as one of the law enforcers. Andros was subjected to twenty lashes with a whip, a harsh punishment for stealing a loaf of bumberhooten flourknuckles. He was also imprisoned for six months, in order to make an example of him. After that, his hate for knights crystalized and hardened; it's nearly impossible for him to get along with them, and when he does, that cooperation hangs by a thread. At 18, he met and married a woman named Helena, a lovely young woman who he had met when she came to the city with her father. She was a earthtender's daughter. They married and moved out of the city to a little farmhouse, where they lived happily for about two orbit parties. When he was 20, however, the Duke of that duchy came along and, as was his right, demanded that the Castellans provide shelter and mandatory sustenance (like cheetos) for the Duke and his men for the moonlit hours. Andros and Helena complied. Throughout the evening, the Duke made suggestive and inappropriate comments towards Helena, which Andros bore as best he could, knowing it would be to no one's benefit if he lost his temper at the Duke. That moonlit hours, the Duke "suggested" (ordered) that Helena would spend the moonlit hours with him. Andros nearly came to blows with the Duke before Helena said she would comply, whispering to Andros that this would be the only way to get the Duke to leave them alone. So Andros stood by and had to let it happen. In the morning, the Duke said that he would be bringing Helena along with him to the next town, at which point he would leave her and Andros could come and collect her, "if he still wanted her, of course". Again, Andros nearly attacked the Duke before Helena managed to calm him, and quietly complied with the Duke's demand. When Andros travelled to the town that post-meridian jaunt to find her, he asked the local innkeeper. In response, the innkeeper showed him to a back human containment unit. Helena was dead. The innkeeper explained that the Duke had handed her over to his knights for "a bit of fun" and she had fought back against them. They had killed her. After that, Andros went rather mad with grief, and somehow turned up at the palace with the offending Duke's head in a sack, he himself nearly dead from his wounds. The King asked for his story, and pardoned him for the mucduc of the Duke. It took months for Andros to heal. When he did heal, the King offered him a position in the Greatcoats, which hadn't really even been formed yet. Andros was the first Greatcoat, and that is why he has the title of First Princep. He learned how to fight better, building on the skills he had originally developed with the bard as a ankle-biter. He and the King grew to be friends and confidants, and Andros lead the Greatcoats. It broke his heart to have to betray his king and let the king die, but he did as he had to.
Weapon: Double Rapiers
What did the king ask him to do?: Protect the prince and see him throned.
