“Yeah, let’s go,” Arvil tugged her forward, out of the cafe. He had paid already while Daisy had been in the restroom, so that was taken care of. He unlocked his car and opened the door for Daisy. “After you.”

Daisy nodded and slid into the seat, silent as if she was still affected by whatever had made her cry earlier. She barely trusted herself to speak at the moment, lest she start crying again.

Arvil looked at her from the corner of his eyes, not knowing what to do to make her feel better. “What flavor do you want, Daisy?”

Deleted user

“You like chocolate fudge?” Arvil scrunched his nose. “I once had it with ice cream and nearly threw up. I hate the taste.”

Deleted user

“It tastes awful!” Arvil defended himself. “And I agree. Nothing can compete against caramel.”

“It is not awful,” Daisy protested, shaking her head. “You’re crazy. Maybe you just have had the right fudge. There’s a place in northern Minnesota that has the best fudge ever. And they have a bunch of different flavors. My parents took me on a trip up there once, and I’ve never forgotten it… It was so peaceful and quiet. You could hear the lake crashing against the shore at night, and the seagulls cried all day and night. And when the fog rolled in… it was so think you could barely see in front of you. And everyone just walked everywhere. There were very few cars, unless you needed to go further out of town. It was beautiful.”

She blinks when she realized she had been ranting, and then a light blush coated her cheeks. She looked out the window, rather embarrassed.

If Arvil hadn’t been driving, he would have just stared at Daisy as she talked. He would have just stared at the blush on her cheeks. That made her look so pretty.

“Do you want to visit again?” He asked her softly, keeping his eyes on the road. “That place.”

Arvil hummed in response. “Then I’ll take you there,” he said. “If you’d like.”

“It would make you happy, right?” Arvil questioned, feeling her eyes on him. He took a right turn. “So I’ll take you there if it means you’ll be happy. Don’t ask me why, Daisy.”

Daisy opened her mouth to protest, then let it fall shut again. She blinked, her gaze taking him in as if truly seeing him.

“Thank you,” she finally whispered after a few beats of silence. “Thank you.”

Arvil smiled softly as he parked in front of Cold Stone. He turned to Daisy, a soft look in his eyes.

“You can tell me when you can get a break from work,” he said. “And we can make a plan.”

Arvil chuckled. “Yeah, let’s go.”

He exited out of the car and waited for Daisy to do the same. He hadn’t asked for her hand, but he kept close to her, though the distance was always there.

“All right, you order first,” he said, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

Daisy wrapped her arms around herself as she studied the menu. After finding something that had caramel — no chocolate this time — she ordered a small container of it. If she wanted more, she could get more, but she didn’t want to waste what she got.

After Daisy had decided what she wanted, Arvil ordered a strawberry blonde. He loved that ice cream flavor. He stood next to Daisy quietly, watching the employees prepare their ice cream.

“One caramel ice cream,” the girl said as she set the cup down on the counter. She looked up and furrowed her eyebrows.

“Hey, we need to wait for mine, too!” Arvil looked at her before pointing at the other employee mixing his strawberry in his ice cream. “In such a big rush, huh?”

“Maybe she’s just jealous,” Arvil shrugged. “You’ve got such a handsome fiancée. I wouldn’t put it past her to be jealous of that. And I suppose you’re pretty, too.”

Daisy shot Arvil a look, raising her eyebrows at him incredulously. “You suppose? Well, don’t I feel special,” she drawled sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
