"Or, we could just sneak into the basement and look for stuff," Gwen suggested with a twinkle in her eye. She might have found a spot where Abby kept things she didn't want Gwen to find.
"Or, we could just sneak into the basement and look for stuff," Gwen suggested with a twinkle in her eye. She might have found a spot where Abby kept things she didn't want Gwen to find.
"Yeah! That sounds good, action immediately!" Saori headed to the doorway, waiting for Gwen to show her the way to the basement.
She pulled her fist down as if to say, yes, in response to Saori-chan’s enthusiasm. Then she rolled out of her bed and slid down the stairs and over to the basement door. She took a few flashlights from the wall and handed one to Saori. “It’s pretty dark down there, and don’t be surprised if you see a spider or two.”
"Alright then," Saori accepted the flashlight, following Gwen's footsteps.
Once they had descended the stairs, she turned her head to look at the piles of things that were all simply lit by her flashlight.
“I think it’s this way,” she said to Saori as she stepped over the piles. “Look for a ginormous cardboard box with a blue tablecloth on top. That’s where she keeps the good stuff.”
"Alright then," Saori flicked on her flashlight, shining it around. She wandered over to another corner, looking around.
She continued to wade through the piles, doing her best not to move too much stuff around.
“So how much do you know about your parents?” she asked Saori.
"Not much, actually, I've never really asked much about them. All I know is that they were both Japanese, like me," Saori replied, sifting through a box.
"Well, that's not much to go by," she replied over her shoulder. "Do you think there's anything important to learn about them? I mean, anything that would surprise you?"
"I mean, I've heard of dynasties being popular in China a really long time ago, they're not popular nowadays, but their legacy certainly still lives on today. Perhaps if I were to learn that say, at least one of my parents was involved with a dynasty, or illegal act of some sort, I'd be surprised," Saori couldn't really think of anything else. Even though it could also be a "know too much, suffer the punishment," type thing, she couldn't think that far or paranoid at the moment; she didn't have enough information to be suspicious about her parents' backgrounds.
"Yeah, I think that'd surprise a lot of people," she joked with a short laugh. Her laugh came to a halt when her hand hit something, something big and bulky. Against her better judgement (there could've been lots of little critters in that box), she reached in and took it out. It was a huge photo album, one of those burgundy ones with gold trim.
She looked up, hearing the sudden halt of the laugh. "Everything okay?" she asked, before noticing the photo album in Gwen's hands. "What's that?"
“Looks pretty old, maybe there are pictures of my parents inside,” she said in a hushed voice. She gingerly opened the cover to find a bunch of baby photos, seemingly of Gwen. She’d never seen those before.
"Huh," Saori padded over to Gwen, peering at the book over Gwen's shoulder. "Is that you as a baby?"
"I think so," she mumbled back, but her brain was not on the conversation. Instead, it was on the woman holding her (or what she assumed was her) in the photo. The small woman who's face was barely visible. She craned her neck, as if that would help her see the photo better, even though she was already holding it inches from her face. She let her finger trace some of the features of the woman's figure.
"Who's that?" she asked, resting a finger on the woman in the photograph. She's rather pretty, Saori thought. She had a hunch that it might be Gwen's mother, but she couldn't tell.
"My guess is as good as yours, but it would make sense if that was my mother." Her voice was hollow now, void of any emotion at all. It sounded like wind more than it did an actual voice.
"There's no way to know who this is for sure."
