Just as Jemi eyed the piece of metal, she heard footsteps. Chesh was returning. She changed her gaze towards the door and watched someone open the door.
Chesh looked around the kitchen. She couldn't come back in with just biscuits, dried fish and chocolate.
Jake walked in. He looked at Jemi on the ceiling. "How did you get up there?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
Jemi fumbled for a second. Oh-no. It's Jake. What do I do? "Chesh." she replied simply, with a faint smile.
Chesh grabbed some water as well as a fruit she didn't know the name of and started to head back.
Jake shrugged. "Figures." He said leaning against the wall. "Do you know where she went? I need to that to her." He said, crossing his arms.
"Kitchen. She was getting food, though she should be back in a minute." Jemi answered, wondering where Chesh was. Jake wasn't bad, but he was still a reminder that she was being imprisoned, a reminder that she was helpless aboard The Zodiac.
Chesh walked back in. "Oh hey Jake!" She said as part of her hair accidentally hit her in the face. "I was just grabbing some food for her." She said as she gave Jemi the food. "Do you want off the ceiling or?" She asked her.
"Err- no not really. I can see why you like it up here." she replied with a smile. She looked between Jake and Chesh and could see that they were close. It was unexpected. Jemi had always thought of pirates as malicious, but she could see clearly that she was wrong.
Chesh nodded. "Did ya need me Captain?" Chesh asked him. Jake nodded his head. "We need you to write again." He said sheepishly. Chesh sighed. "Okay. We really need someone else of this ship who can write Jake. My handwriting is the worst." She complained.
Jemi couldn't help overhearing. After all, they were talking right in front of her. "I can write. Decently, at least." she interjected. "Maybe I can help?"
Both Jake and Chesh stared at Jemi for a bit. "You can write?" Chesh asked, surprised. Jake smirked as he leaned against the wall. "Depends." He said with a slight chuckle as he took the key to the cell out of his pocket, twirling it abound in his fingers. He handed it to Chesh. "How do you feel about writing your own ransom note?"
Jemi looked at Chesh. "Yeah I can write. I had to learn." She then addressed Jake. "Well that is a bit conflicting, but I don't really care. You could force me to do it if you wanted to anyway." But she doubted that he would actually force her to do anything, unless she misbehaved.
Jake shook his head. "I wouldn't force you to do it." He said. Chesh had Jemi float down from the ceiling. "You sure your OK with it?" Chesh asked, about to unlock the door.
"Yeah." Jemi reassured Chesh. "Besides there isn't much else to do on board and the ransom is my only way out. May as well try."
Chesh looked at Jemi, and then at Jake. Chesh and Jake seemed to have a conversation without speaking. Chesh turned back and unlocked the cell. "Come on." Jake said, motioning to follow him as he walked out of the room.
Jemi shot Chesh a quick glance as she headed out of the door, as if to say that she'd be fine. After seeing Jake and Chesh interact, she wasn't scared of him. All she was doing was shooting her shot at getting out by writing her ransom note.
Jake had Jemi and Chesh follow him up to the captains quarters. Chesh shut the door behind them as they walked in, so no one would disturb them. On Jake's desk was a pen and paper. She motioned for Jemi to sit. Chesh looked worried for some reason.
Jemi looked back at Chesh, who was nervously shifting around. "Well, you definitely look nervous. I'm not gonna try anything. What are you worried about?" she said. She sat down at the desk and stared at Chesh. Although she was going for a reassuring look, it probably came off as creepy.
Chesh looked at Jemi. "Nothing! I'm fine." She said. In reality she was starting to get worried. Ransoms were always hard for the crew. There was always more of a chance of death or getting caught. That mixed with the fact that she didn't was Jemi to leave was maddening.
Jemi didn't quite believe her completely, but she didn't want to push. "Alright…" she looked to Jake. "So what do I write? After all, it's not everyday you get to write your own ransom note."
Jake looked at her for a moment. "You could probably put it in better words that I could." He said. "You try." He said as he pulled out a bottle of rum and started drinking. Chesh looked at Jake and rolled her eyes. "If your going to drink at least share." She teased.
Jemi took the pen and started to think. She scrawled onto the paper. We have Captain Jemi. We will return her safely when you give us… she stopped. "What's my ransom gonna be, then? How valuable am I?" she said to Jake.
Jake took a swig and set the bottle down. "40 gold pieces." He said wiping his mouth. Chesh's eyes widened. 40? "I think that's the most we've ever asked for a captain." Chesh said looking at Jake. "I'm feeling risky." She said with a smirk. Chesh chuckled as she grabbed the bottle. "I think that's enough rum for one day." She said as she took a swig.
"Alright then." Jemi said smiling. Do they really think I'm worth 40 gold pieces? She wrote the rest of the note and gave it to Jake to review. "Short and to the point. A good note to me." she added as Jake read the note. She looked at Chesh and smiled as she took a swig of rum.
Jake handed it to Chesh. He couldn't read. Some of the other on the ship could but Chesh was the only one who could write. Chesh read it over and read it out loud. "Sounds good!" She said smiling at Jemi. "Do ya want some?" She asked, offering the bottle of rum to Jemi. "Hey! That my rum!" Jake barked. Chesh just laughed.
Jemi grabbed the bottle and took a swig. "Thanks Chesh. And Jake." She sighed. The captain's quarters were definitely nicer than the cell she was stuck in. It reminded her of her own Captain quarters on The Cassiopeia.
