He sensed her look away from the wonder above, and a small smile appeared on his face, pure in its happiness. He looked down and met her gaze.
She looked so beautiful in the moment, peaceful and happy and smattered with raindrops. Her brilliant eyes shone through the heavy air, searing his soul with her brimming wonder.
Her mind flicked to what they must look like, maybe from someone walking by across the street. Two people, smiling goofily at each other, while the rain dripped everywhere except for the area they were in. The thought startled her, since she realized that, to one on the outside looking in, they looked like they were in love.
"Oh my gosh," she whispered, the words escaping her lips before she could catch them.
Theo opened his mouth to speak, closed it, looked away and towards the deserted street. "What is it?" he asked quietly.
She had a vexed look on her face and she couldn't look him in the eye when she replied. "I totally forgot," she lied, "I was supposed to FaceTime my family tonight, they're going to be really worried if they don't get a call from me. I should go, sorry I have to bail like this."
“I… Okay. That’s okay. See you around.” He didn’t look away from the street, hoping his expression was covered by his hair, or unreadable from his profile. What had he done, losing himself like that on their first evening together? He’d been the strange kid again, chasing every one away with his colourful but misunderstood mind.
“I’ll get the bill,” he told her as he stood up, grasping at anything to make him seem like other men. That was a common statement, wasn’t it?
He finally looked up at her, meeting her gaze. Was the regret in his obvious?
By the look on his face, he seemed sad that she had to go, which made her even more resolved to leave. She was stupid, she knew she couldn't do this! She knew she would have to leave if she did get attached, and that would hurt even worse than this. But part of her knew it was too late; she was already looking at him, her guarded expression was coming down.
"Thank you so much, I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have done this to you," she babbled. Then she stood to leave, but couldn't bring herself to let go just yet. "Enjoy the rest of the storm," she mumbled.
"I'll try."
But he knew the second that she turned to leave the storm would fade. She was the magic inside it, and without her it was nothing but water drowning a useless city. He didn't understand the feeling, but understood it was precious.
She obviously didn't feel the same. "Get home safely."
She raised her hand in a wave. She wanted so badly to say, don't do that to me. I want to stay, I really do. Don't make me feel bad about it. But, for some reason, she just couldn't. Instead, she flipped her waterproof jacket's hood up over her head, and turned to make her way through the rain.
She turned around. He didn't know when he'd next see her face, her glorious eyes, her frizzy hair, her perfectly coloured complexion… But he couldn't think of that, not now. He sat back down, head in his hands, letting the rain inside him to soak away the hurt.
She stumbled through the foggy rain and fumbled with her keys as she did so, wanting to get away from the storm. The storm that he was in, that they used to be in together. She didn't know why she was so concerned about this. Once she got inside, she collapsed onto her bed and stared through the skylight at the raindrops that were hitting the glass above her head. She tried to think of good things, like seeing her family again or hanging out with Gwen once she got home, but the same face kept pushing all those things aside. He was so interesting. She couldn't get her brain to think of anything else.
(So i got something to do for a few minutes, I'll probably be gone for like 30, but I'll be right back)
(OKAY! Crazy school period is calming down and I'm back!!)
It numbed him. For the first time in many, many years, all feeling left him. It felt amazingly painful.
He stood, waking out into the street.
Not now. Not now. He could feel the break edging towards him, his lightly scarred arms aching in advance. Not again. Not again. He inhaled deeply, trembling violently. He almost stumbled, fell onto the street, but caught himself in time.
He was walking… Somewhere unknown.
(AS I WAS SAYING)
(WHAT WAS IT)
(I was just being silly lol that was right after our conversation in the ship chat)
(So do you wanna timeskip?)
(Sure. When are you thinking?)
(what if she feels bad about the night before so she decides to show up at the hospital and surprise him?)
(Yeah! And I think we talked about his mother getting worse, so how about they talk it out and are about to leave and then gasp coma or something like that)
Timeskip: The Next Morning
Piper awoke with her upper body partially hanging off the bed. After lying there for a few minutes, she sat up and rolled out of the bed. She had been thinking about him all night, about how much of a jerky move it was to leave him like that, and about how she would make it up to him. He’d told her in conversation the day before that he would be at the hospital all day today. Since it was Saturday, she didn’t have to work, and she was planning on surprising him at the hospital.
(just wondering~ are you still finding this rp interesting? Honestly, because I had someone drop out recently cause they got bored so let me know if that's your case?)
Theo was already in the subway, on his way back from a night shift at the children's clinic he worked at. He let himself nod off along the ride, only getting home by 8.30 am.
He shuffled his way home, planning to sleep until 11 o'clock before heading to the hospital.
