"O-Oh… okay…" Cas accepted the glass from Nick and started drinking it quietly, still holding back his tears. He refused to let them fall. He wasn't going to cry at his new friend's house.

The rest of the dinner passed in awkward silence, with Nick’s mom not wanting to talk and Nick not sure how to comfort Cas, at least not with his mom present.

After dinner was over, Cas hesitated before getting to his feet and heading into the living room with Nick. "I'm sorry for ruining dinner… I don't think your mom likes me…" He whispered.

“It’s okay, Cas,” Nick responded. “She’s really judgmental of my friends if they don’t fit into a certain category. I should have warned you.”

"What… what category is that?" Cas asked softly. "I know it's probably all my fault, and I'm really sorry, Nick…"

“Rich, or well-off, good grades, outgoing.” Nick sighed. “Straight. She thinks that maybe if they’re straight it’ll rub off on me, somehow. And also, cheerful, from a nuclear family.”

Cas sighed softly as well. "I'm not any of those things… I'm a street rat, can't even read, and obviously I don't have the outgoing thing going for me. I'm also incredibly gay. Like, as far from straight as you can be."

Nick chuckled, though he didn’t really find it funny, just sad that his mom only accepted certain kinds of people. “She acts so accepting but the second someone who isn’t her kind of person walks in the door, it all goes down the drain. Seriously, it’s not your fault.”

Cas nodded a bit. "I still wanna be able to hang out with you, though… do you think she'll let me come over?"

“You won’t actually stop you from coming over, just try to guilt me into not asking you and give us dirty looks,” Nick added. “So obviously I’m going to keep inviting you over.”

"Okay…" Cas was still a bit uneasy, but relieved that he'd still get to hang out with his only friend at school. "Uhm… when's the best time for me to come over next?" He asked.

“Whenever,” Nick replied. “Next weekend Jane has a softball tournament so it’ll just me be here, if that makes you feel more comfortable.”

"Okay, um… that sounds good to me, I guess. And you wanted me to bring Nix over?" He asked softly.

“If you’re okay with it,” Nick said, giving Cas a small smile.

"It's fine with me." Cas smiled weakly and fidgeted a bit with his hands. "I'll make sure to bring him. Should I bring anything else?" He asked.

Nick shrugged. “If you want. I don’t really care what else you bring, to be honest.”

Cas nodded a bit. "Alright, um… I'm not sure when you want me to go back home, but I figured I should let you know that I have no clue how to get there from here…"

“Do you know your address?” Nick asked, furrowing his brows.

"Ah, um…" Cas considered for a few seconds before shaking his head. "No… not the exact address. I only know generally where the house is relative to the school… I haven't been living there very long."

“Okay, do you know your foster parents’ phone number? If not, we can just drive to the school and then to your house,” he suggested.

Cas shook his head nervously. "N-No, I don't know their numbers, and… and I don't have a phone myself. I guess driving to the school first would work… but I can walk from there, you guys really don't need to go out of your way for my sake."

“No way am I letting you walk by yourself when it’s getting dark out,” Nick argued, before taking a deep breath. “Please just let me drive you?”

"Alright, alright…" Cas sighed. "I can protect myself, though. You don't need to worry about people on the streets attacking me or anything."

“I know, but I don’t wanna chance it,” he admitted. “So, let’s get going then.”

"Okay…" Cas stuck close to Nick as he followed him outside and into the car.
