Sirus nodded, "Understood." he said softly, before shifting and falling into step beside them.
Sirus nodded, "Understood." he said softly, before shifting and falling into step beside them.
The girl stared at him in shock when he shifted in front of them before glancing over at Corvin.
He nodded slightly at her silent question and gave her an inquisitive look in return. Though she only smiled, convinced she had made the right choice and knew what she was doing.
Sirus paid no mind to her shock, just trailing behind them as they carried their prey.
The walk back took almost more than double the time it took them to hunt down the buck. As expected, there was a small gathering waiting for the new hunter in the center of the encampment. Though Sirius's presence caused the biggest reaction.
Most of the older hunters and warriors could tell what he was though there was still a general air of awe and confusion as the group headed toward the chief’s home first.
Sirus just put on a wolfish smirk as his presence attracted stares and questions. He didn't seem to mind it either, rather it was rather interesting.
The girl glanced at the large black wolf as they walked together and couldn't help but chuckle slightly as she noticed him enjoying the attention. It was oddly reassuring, especially when she saw Corvin also smirking.
”What’s wrong, Princess? Can't hunt on your own?” a heckler called out from the crowd. ”Had to steal from a wolf?” he laughed mockingly.
Sirus turned around and growled at the heckler, stepping close to the crowd and glaring at him as he shifted back, "You would insinuate that I would let someone steal my catch?" he asked, "If this young lady had stolen what I had hunted, then you had best be admiring her skill to have overpowered me." he said flatly.
The now terrified young man scrambled back, nearly dropping his weapon as he fumbled to grab it.
Corvin also glowered at the heckler, not just for his accusation but for revealing that the girl he was with was the young royal that Sirius had been hired to find.
Gwen also growled at the pest she had learned to put up with since she stayed with the tribe. Though she felt her face warm at the shifter’s words. It sounded like a compliment… though she wasn't completely sure.
Sirus glowered at him a little longer, before turning and shifting back, seeming to prefer being a wolf. Possibly for the fear factor, possibly because it was harder to read his emotions, maybe just because he was more wolf than human. No one would really know.
Gwen smiled a little at the shifter, grateful for his intervention. That boy had treated her like that practically from the moment she had been brought here… It didn't help that their first interact had been to punch him in the face, breaking his nose, when she tried to get away.
Corvin sighed a little and set the deer down before moving to stand next to his student. ”The chief should be out soon and you'll be recognized as a hunter.” he said, bringing the attention back to the moment. ”Then you can focus on your decision to be a warrior of our people.” he smiled at her. It really had been her decision and had taken a lot of arguing to get her the chance.
Sirus slipped back away from them, sitting down on his haunches, the tips of his ears almost chest level next to the small group of warriors on the edge of the crowd. In truth he was intrigued by the situation.
Gwen smiled at her mentor's assurances. The thought of becoming a warrior fortified her resolve on staying… at least until she saw Sirius out of the corner of her eye. For a moment, she almost forgot what he said about not taking her against her will. She took a deep slow breath to calm down and nodded. ”Thank you for teaching me. I won't let you down.” she said sincerely, as the door to the chief’s home opened.
Sirus stayed silent, watching the tribe, and the chief when he stepped out into the open, still mainly just surveying the situation.
The chief was an older man but still very strong looking. It would have been more intimidating if his bear of a grandson, and future chief, wasn't standing beside him. All who were present for the ”ceremony” stood quietly as their leader came over and examined the kill.
Gwen was practically buzzing with anticipation when Corvin was called aside, after a few minutes, to give his assessment of her abilities as a hunter. She knew he was biased in her favor but she hoped that fact wouldn't affect the chief’s decision.
Sirus stayed where he was, simply an observer for the moment, not planning on stepping in until after the ceremony, or unless he was asked.
The chief raised a brow and glanced over Sirius though he waited for Corvin to finish before turning fully to face the visitor. ”Shifter, you also witnessed the hunt?” the chief asked. ”Come. Tell me what you saw.”
Sirus obliged and shifted, "She did very well to track it down, and make the kill without any issue." he said simply, "An admirable huntress."
”Thank you.” The chief nodded, taking his blunt simple opinion into account. Actually the older man appreciated the short reply.
Gwen blushed behind the war paint at the compliment. She hadn't expected him to be called up but she was grateful for what he said.
Sirus always thought that fewer words were easier to understand. After all, that what words were for, to get a message across. And it's hard to get a message across when there are to many words. The meaning gets lost in translation.
The chief walked back over to Gwen, his face the impassive mask of a leader. Gwen understood it was to keep from showing bias but it still made her fairly nervous. She stood firm next to the animal and tried to mimic the older man’s expression.
”Gwendolyn, you were not born of our people yet you took to our training as a wild horse takes to the open plains.” the chief commented. ”Your strong will granted you a speed in learning that very few of our tribe have accomplished. For this and your outstanding first hunt, you are now a proud hunter of our tribe.” he ended his short speech with a small smile.
Sirus simply nodded approvingly, watching as the chieftain approved of her kill. Soon he would be able to look into his task.
Gwen was beaming proudly as the chief gave her the new title. She almost bowed out of old habit but held back since this tribe didn't do that.
Corvin walked over and hugged the young woman, chuckling a little. ”I’m so proud of you.”
Sirus simply watched from where he was, silent except for the sound of him readjusting his pack, something in side making a soft clang.
Gwen happily returned the hug for a moment before pulling away and walking to Sirius. ”Thank you. For your remark to the chief.” she smiled softly. ”And what you said when you defended my integrity as a hunter.”
"I only said what was true when I was asked. There's no need to thank me for that." he said with a shrug.
