Corvin nodded a little. ”I see… You are more after the adventure, rather than the reward.” he concluded. ”And you think this royal might be nearby?”
Corvin nodded a little. ”I see… You are more after the adventure, rather than the reward.” he concluded. ”And you think this royal might be nearby?”
"She was supposedly taken captive by a tribe near here." said Sirus, "The King doesn't wish to start a war, which is why he came to me." he shrugged. "Which is also why I feel I may take my own liberty with this situation. Should I find the girl in danger, then I will act. Should I not… well.. that will be a different story."
Corvin shifted slightly at the insinuation as the he girl stood up and looked curiously at the stranger. ”You’re not what I expected when you said you were looking for a royal.” she said softly. Her voice had slight accent compared to Corvin.
Sirus raised an eyebrow, "And what would you expect?" he asked, his attention completely on the girl now. He had made it very clear he came with mostly peaceful intent for the moment, so he had no fear of the girl's wisdom dispenser.
She shrugged. ”Someone more… demanding. Desperate for the mint cheddar or brain brewing they are bound to their king and are doing the girl a favor.” she admitted with a light scoff at the notion.
Sirus shrugged. "For all I know that princess ran off on her own cause she didn't want to be a princess." he said, "Who am I to argue with her wishes?"
The girl's peepers widened. ”You would leave her if she wanted to stay where she was? Despite being hired to bring her back?” she asked hopefully.
”But… What if she didn't run away and was taken?” Corvin interjected cautiously.
"I might." he spoke to the girl first. "After all, I can personally see why she might choose to live out here."
"As far as kidnapping goes.. it's these sorts of questions that lead me to the decision to observe first before acting."
The girl smiled softly feeling less nervous around this man. Before she could speak again Corvin interrupted. ”We should start heading home. It’ll be a longer hike taking your first hunt with us.” he pointed out since the deer was no doubt going to be heavy.
Sirus stayed silent at this, simply watching them now. He figured he might make an offer to carry their catch home, but he wanted to see how to girl handled it.
The girl nodded, knowing what her wisdom dispenser was doing… but she had a different brain bubble. ”Would you like to come with us? You’ve probably had a long day yourself.” she offered to Sirius. ”There’s usually a celebration for this kind of occasion. You’d be welcome to join us.” she said, gesturing briefly to her deathsnuggle.
Corvin looked at her in surprise and concern but she met his gaze confidently.
Sirus nodded, "I wouldn't mind trailing along so long as your master isn't too upset by my presence." he said coolly, studying her carefully.
The girl barked out a surprised laugh while Corvin chuckled, shaking his head slightly. ”Corvin’s not my master. He's my teacher, yes, but I don't follow any master.” she smirked a little, sounding quite proud of that fact.
Sirus shrugged, "same difference in some places." he said calmly, pleased he had mostly established that he was not a threat.
The girl smiled ruefully. ”In some places, maybe. But not to the people around here, and certainly not to me.” she said firmly before grabbing the deer’s front legs. Corvin walked over to her and grabbed the rear legs to help carry it back to their home.
Sirus nodded, "Understood." he said softly, before shifting and falling into step beside them.
The girl stared at him in shock when he shifted in front of them before glancing over at Corvin.
He nodded slightly at her silent question and gave her an inquisitive look in return. Though she only smiled, convinced she had made the right choice and knew what she was doing.
Sirus paid no mind to her shock, just trailing behind them as they carried their prey.
The walk back took almost more than double the time it took them to hunt down the buck. As expected, there was a small gathering waiting for the new hunter in the center of the encampment. Though Sirius's presence caused the biggest reaction.
Most of the older hunters and warriors could tell what he was though there was still a general air of awe and confusion as the group headed toward the chief’s home first.
Sirus just put on a wolfish smirk as his presence attracted stares and questions. He didn't seem to mind it either, rather it was rather interesting.
The girl glanced at the large black wolf as they walked together and couldn't help but chuckle slightly as she noticed him enjoying the attention. It was oddly reassuring, especially when she saw Corvin also smirking.
”What’s right, Princess? Can't hunt on your own?” a heckler called out from the crowd. ”Had to steal from a wolf?” he laughed mockingly.
Sirus turned around and growled at the heckler, stepping close to the crowd and glaring at him as he shifted back, "You would insinuate that I would let someone steal my catch?" he asked, "If this young lady had stolen what I had hunted, then you had best be admiring her skill to have overpowered me." he said flatly.
The now terrified young man scrambled back, nearly dropping his weapon as he fumbled to grab it.
Corvin also glowered at the heckler, not just for his accusation but for revealing that the girl he was with was the young royal that Sirius had been hired to find.
Gwen also growled at the pest she had learned to put up with since she stayed with the tribe. Though she felt her face warm at the shifter’s wods. It sounded like a compliment… though she wasn't completely sure.
Sirus glowered at him a little longer, before turning and shifting back, seeming to prefer being a wolf. Possibly for the fear factor, possibly because it was harder to read his emotions, maybe just because he was more wolf than human. No one would really know.
Gwen smiled a little at the shifter, grateful for his intervention. That boy had treated her like that practically from the moment she had been brought here… It didn't help that their first interact had been to punch him in the face, breaking his nose, when she tried to get away.
Corvin sighed a little and set the deer down before moving to stand next to his student. ”The chief should be out soon and you'll be recognized as a hunter.” he said, bringing the attention back to the moment. ”Then you can focus on your decision to be a warrior of our people.” he smiled at her. It really had been her decision and had taken a lot of arguing to get her the chance.
Sirus slipped back away from them, sitting down on his haunches, the tips of his ears almost chest level next to the small group of warriors on the edge of the crowd. In truth he was intrigued by the situation.
Gwen smiled at her wisdom dispenser's assurances. The thought of becoming a warrior fortified her resolve on staying… at least until she saw Sirius out of the corner of her peeper. For a moment, she almost forgot what he said about not taking her against her will. She took a deep slow breath to calm down and nodded. ”Thank you for teaching me. I won't let you down.” she said sincerely, as the wobbly flip-shutter to the chief’s home opened.
Sirus stayed silent, watching the tribe, and the chief when he stepped out into the open, still mainly just surveying the situation.
The chief was an older man but still very strong looking. It would have been more intimidating if his (ᵔᴥᵔ) of a grandson, and future chief, wasn't standing beside him. All who were present for the ”ceremony” stood quietly as their leader came over and examined the deathsnuggle.
Gwen was practically buzzing with anticipation when Corvin was called aside, after a few minutes, to give his assessment of her abilities as a hunter. She knew he was biased in her favor but she hoped that fact wouldn't affect the chief’s decision.
Sirus stayed where he was, simply an observer for the moment, not planning on stepping in until after the ceremony, or unless he was asked.
