"you?" he asked.
"you?" he asked.
"Call me Arie." She didn't give people her full name.
Skye nodded, watching her.
Arie reached into her pocket. She pulled out a light blue amulet. She held it to the sun. It sent a strange pattern to the ground.
Skye saw it, studying it carefully, tucking his back in his shirt.
The patterns soon formed scenes; they were Darling's memories.
Skye leaned forward to watch with interest.
It started with a litter of brothers and sisters; they were all normal dogs. Playing with her littermates, laying with them against her mother. Then, a gentle hand picking her up; a car, and the searching for her siblings. Then, older, on the farm; an accident, poison. Whimpering in the corner, losing her hair, her form. Shunned, abandoned. Growing larger. Screaming. A girl, Arie, stepping in, blood on her chin. Placing her hand on Darling's chest, then, the soul coming away.
Skye nodded in understanding, looking to Darling for a moment.
Arie put the amulet back into her pocket. Darling put her muzzle on Arie shoulder.
Skye nodded, his features softening, he still didn't speak, mutual understanding in the air.
Arie leaned her head on Darling.
Skye sighed getting up to pace.
"We were both alone," was all she said.
Arie looked up at Skye.
"Why are you doing that?"
Skye nodded to her words before pacing some more. Update from a friend… he told her, Things back home…
"Oh. Good or bad?"
In between… he said distractedly, his face emotionless.
Arie nodded. She went back to petting Darling.
Skye continued pacing, eventually sighing, sitting back down and rubbing his temples.
Arie glanced over at Skye.
Skye sighed again, muttering something about idiots, stupid council members, and not being fit for the job.
Okay then, Arie thought.
Skye flopped back with an exasperated sigh. "I hate you" he muttered aloud.
"Um… Okay, that's pretty understandable," Arie said.
