Lukas just stood there, staring at the water.
Lukas just stood there, staring at the water.
Fiel paused, watching Lukas worriedly. "Lukas….look at me please. Are you sure you're all right?"
Lukas slowly looked up at Fiel his expression blank. Not saying a word he let go of him and took a step back.
"Lukas? What's wrong?" Fiel was a bit worried now. Perhaps he'd pushed Lukas too hard and moved them along too quickly.
Lukas fell over.
"Oh sh–" Fiel dove for him and grabbed him before his head could go underwater. Without wasting a second he pulled Lukas back to shore, laying him on the grassy back and frantically trying to figure out what was wrong.
Lukas was passed out, his breathing was uneven and he twitched randomly. He was having a flashback. Something he had thought had stopped.
Fiel had no idea what to do. If something happened to the prince while they were alone in the forest, there could be dire political consequences. But more importantly, Fiel wouldn't be able to live with himself if Lukas was hurt or traumatized all over again.
Fighting to stay calm, he closed his eyes and summoned his magic, using it to read Lukas's aura and search for a problem. Physically, he seemed fine, but his emotions were not, and something in his mind seemed to be going haywire. It was like some kind of overreactive fear response had shut Lukas down entirely.
"Lukas," he whispered helplessly. "Wake up! There's nothing wrong, you're safe—I promise!"
Lukas stopped shaking and slowly his breath evened out. He sat up quickly looking around panicking.
"Hey. Hey." Fiel took Lukas's shoulders and tried to catch his eye. "Lukas, can you hear me? It's okay. You're okay."
Lukas blinked and he relaxed and leaned agains Fiel, “I’m sorry” he mumbled.
Fiel hugged him, simply glad that Lukas was awake again. "No, I'm sorry. I went too fast. I should have been more careful and seen that you were getting overwhelmed. It's my fault this happened." He took a shaky breath. "It won't happen again, I promise."
“No…it’s not your fault..I got ahead of myself and” his voice broke, “I thought I saw him…” he whispered. Hugging Fiel tightly.
Fiel spoke very softly. "It must be so hard to always remember what happened. You were very brave to get this far today. But I think we should stop for now." He didn't let go of Lukas, still worried about him. "Has….has this happened to you before? This thing where you pass out?"
“Mhm, not in a few months…but at first it was all the time” he said sadly. He used to have flashbacks on a daily basis “but talking to…Well his stone…helps me.” He said softly, starting to cry.
(Me legit crying rn)
(Me tooo T^T)
Fiel nodded. "That stone is his marker? I thought it might be. I didn't…..I didn't want to ask." He heard Lukas start to cry and instinctively put a hand on Lukas's head, stroking his hair the way he sometimes did with his sibling when they cried. "Hey….do you want to go back to the castle? I think we're done with the pond for a while."
Lukas took a shaky breath, “not- yet” he mutters, he knew he needed to collect himself before he could go back. Part of him wondered that while he was gone if he would be ok, he had talked to his brother every morning and to not do it…well he had not done that before and it worried him.
Fiel sat still, letting Lukas decide when to move. He wasn't sure what else to do—honestly he just wanted to help Lukas feel better. In the back of his mind, a growing worry about their upcoming journey tugged at him. "This…..changes things about our plan to go to my home, Lukas. I will be carrying you, of course, but I worry that if you pass out while we're over the ocean…..well, things could easily spiral out of control. Are you sure you're truly up for this?"
Lukas nodded, “I can control it, I think that just now, it was just…to much at once” he said with a small smile. He honestly didn’t want to move, but he figured he might be making Fiel uncomfortable so he pulled away from the hug.
As he sat back, Fiel anxiously studied Lukas's expression to make sure he was feeling at least a little better. "I'm glad to hear that. I promise we'll take it slow after this. I didn't understand as well before, but now I think I do…at least a little." He returned Lukas's smile cautiously. "So…..does that mean you still want to go? I would be overjoyed to show you my home, but not if it causes you pain and grief to get there."
“Yes, I still want to go” Lukas smiles and slowly stood up. “But we should probably get back now, I mean if we want to start getting ready to leave…plus I have things to write” he muttered the last part.
Fiel rose also, trying to brush off the mud from his once-clean clothes. "I think you're right. Oh…..I don't suppose you have a spare set of dry clothes, do you? I really did not bring enough for my stay here, it seems." He didn't quite catch what Lukas muttered, as he was busy collecting his jacket and boots from the treeline.
Lukas put his shoes back on, "yeah you can borrow some" He said plainly, struggling to get his boots on.
(I question myself on why I made his story so sad then I remember "great tragedy builds great character")
"Thank-you." Fiel tied his jacket around his waist and went over to Lukas. "Need any help?"
