"Shut it." Melanie said affirmatively, only about half serious. "I have work to get done, but, unlike you, I know what to do." Melanie takes out a paper and a mechanical pencil, a black one with a dark grey grip and a white eraser, and starts working quickly, expecting to be done in minutes.
Alec rolled his eyes, finishing with the literature, and doing a once over on his history and science notes. "Well I'm already finished and you're not" he said triumphantly, watching her as he organized and out his papers away.
"That's because my work's harder than yours. Distance formula is first learned in…what? Algebra? I'm in Calculus, a college class!" Melanie glared at him. "And I'm done." She held up her paper as proof. "And I used a calculator only once. So please, if I may, I'd like to go to class now." Melanie stood up, taking her things, and went towards her homeroom, leaving her phone with the calculator app open on the table.
Alex sighed when she left, noticing that she'd left her stuff behind well after she was gone. "Great" he said, shouldering his bag and grabbing the phone and calculator. Rolling his eyes he sniffed them, carefully picking he perfume out of the air and tracking it, wandering the halls.
Composition English 1 - Rutan, Ben - Rm. 103
Great, this class… almost all the kids here are oddballs. Melanie sighed as she waited for the teacher to come and open the door. It was twenty minutes until class started, and Mr. Rutan was known for arriving ten minutes until the bell rung, indicating class would start. She opened her bag and fetched her book, thankful nobody was around.
Alex's stride was purposeful as he focused on the light and airy scent, Thank the stars I'm not normal, otherwise this would be impossible! he thought, noting that he was headed near his next class too. Heading down another hallway he followed the scent into a classroom. Looking around he quickly spotted the person he wanted, starting over.
Melanie was focusing on her chromebook when she saw Alex walk in. What the hell? This guy cannot have the same class as me! What's he doing here? Melanie scowled at him after rolling her eyes. Great. Just great. Another bad mark to my day.
Alex took a step back and checked the room number and his time table, Well now! It seems I've found my next class he mused. Heading over to Melanie he saw her scowl, smirking he pulled her phone and calculator out of his pocket. "You left these behind" he said, placing them on her desk, "Oh and you look really pretty with that scowl."
"I hate you." Melanie grumbled, taking her phone and calculator, shutting her laptop halfway. "You can, y'know, go to class now. There's, what? Five minutes until the bell rings? Unless it's nearby, you better get moving."
"It just so happens my next class is right here" he said, purposely sitting next to her. He knew she was probably not someone to antagonize, but he needed some excitement.
"I swear to god, I will make your life a living hell if you stay in that seat." Melanie glared at him, putting her stuff away when the bell rang.
"Alright class! I hope you like your seats, because they'll be your assigned seats, at least for this first term." The teacher, an athletic guy with a small beard and tattoos on his arms says. "I'm your teacher, Mr. Rutan. I see some new-and old- faces around here, so I'm going to take attendance before we start class."
What? NO! I am NOT sitting next to this jerk!
He starts calling off students' names, and frowns slightly when he calls, "Melanie Rodriguez?"
"Here. Can I change seats? Like, now?" Melanie asks, trying not to acknowledge Alex.
"No." Mr. Rutan's voice was stern and harsh, and Melanie knew she would hate this class. He continued on, calling students' names.
Alex smirked, he liked annoying people. "Miss, I never meant to bother you. It's nothing personal." he said coolly, taking out his textbook for the class.
"I. Will. Kill. You." Melanie seethed through her teeth. She got the large textbook out of her carry-on bag and turned to the start of the first unit.
"Today you will be working on problems one through thirty. You can work with a partner if you'd like. Be sure to read the passage in the book beforehand before answering the questions. The time is yours." Mr. Rutan walks over to his desk and turns his computer on, working on something.
Thank god, I am never-not in a million years-working with that jerk! Melanie smiled faintly before starting to read the passage, finishing reading in a minute before going over the questions.
Alex calmly worked through the page, reading and answering carefully. Whelp. Not the first time someone's threatened my life. Luckily it's the last class of the day.
Melanie finished with twenty minutes to spare. She set her textbook aside and got out her laptop, opening Google Docs. She appeared to be working on a fictional story.
Alex was still working, but he watched her carefully out of the corner of his eye. "What'cha workin' on?" he asked, not looking up from his work.
"Nothing you should be concerned about." Melanie responded, typing on her laptop. She sighed, and continued. "A story. Fantasy and crap. Don't think you'll care, though. Are you really not done yet?" Melanie turned to him. "That was easy!"
"Fantasy hmm?" said Alex, working on one of the last few questions. "Is magic and chivalry involved?" he smirked, If only she knew the kinds of things that really happened out there
"Maybe not chivalry, but magic, yes. It's about a guy who finds out about his magical ancestry and that he has magical powers of some sort. I'm thinking maybe something based off an element, but I'm not sure. And I'm not completely sure where I want the plot to go, I just kinda had an idea that I typed out, and I'm rambling again so I should stop geeking out now." Melanie sighed. "Look, thanks for the attempts at being nice, but I don't do nice. I do honesty. For example, you got number twelve wrong. Alecia is a round dynamic character, not a round static character. This is supposed to be review."
Alex quickly changed it with a roll of his eyes. "Excuse me for not being perfect." he said, "Which element were you thinking of using?"
"Something along the lines of electricity, maybe something unique about it, like electric claws or wings." Melanie paused before adding. "No, I will not be taking advice, critiques, or anything of the sort. If you do, I swear, I'll smash your face in." Melanie turned the computer towards him, allowing him to read it. (No I don't have it irl)
Alex gave it a once over, "That's really good" he said quietly, "though the magic bits are a bit unrealistic. That one spell halfway through should've drained them at least." he said gently, ignoring her earlier warning about getting faces smashed in.
(I''s cool)
"Yeah, true. Otherwise it wouldn't capture the struggle within the main character…and plus, unlimited magic-in novels-are usually never unlimited unless it's like some artifact or something. And he shouldn't be that powerful, not halfway through the story." Melanie pulls out some post-its and takes quick notes. "Oh yeah, I'll kill you after school." She said in a less serious tone than before, distracted by writing things down. The bell rings, ending the school day, and Melanie packs up. "I gotta go get to my bus, so later I'll kill you." She explains, standing up and putting her bag around her shoulder.
Alex sighed, grabbing his stuff and turning down the hall, "Good luck finding me!" he said, heading out and jogging off towards the trees. Finally, now maybe I can train.
"Hey!" Melanie yelled after him, but continued walking down the hall, rolling her eyes. He's a jerk, but he's…okay. Maybe not the politest, but better than me behaviour-wise. Melanie found herself outside of the school, and she walks along the sidewalk, finding her bus. Thankfully she hadn't been restricted from the bus, or else she would have to walk the two miles to her house. She found an empty seat and sighed, waiting until the bus was at her stop, where she drolly got off, making sure she had everything, including her phone and calculator. She opened the front door with her key and put her stuff in the entryway, greeted by her only parent that she lived with, her mom.
"How was school?" Cierra, her mom, said with a happy tone.
"Fine."
"Did you talk to anyone? Meet any new friends?"
"Look, mom. The answer is and always will be, 'no'"
"Fine. Dinner is on the table, I'm going out tonight." Cierra walked happily past the sulking Melanie and grabbed her purse with a smile. "Love you!" And she left.
"Oh yeah? Then I guess I'm going out, too! Stupid Mom with her stupid boyfriend…" Melanie grumbled as she scarfed down dinner, pasta salad, and then left, wandering aimlessly, just wanting to get away. She ventures to the one place she hasn't been before, somewhere where people wouldn't bother her: the woods behind her house.
