Kit nodded and tensed up a bit as the first soft sounds of thunder began. Raindrops pattered on the roof, and he was beginning to tremble. His breathing hitched at a crash of lightning, and he clung tightly to Marin.
Kit nodded and tensed up a bit as the first soft sounds of thunder began. Raindrops pattered on the roof, and he was beginning to tremble. His breathing hitched at a crash of lightning, and he clung tightly to Marin.
Marin picked up their humming as the storm started, rubbing the young boy's back as they did. They continued to hum as Kit clung to them.
Kit was crying softly, trying his best to keep quiet so he wouldn't be so much of a problem. Maybe if… if I tune it out, I might be able to sleep…
Marin continued with the gentle rubbings, holding Kit close to their chest.
"I've got you… Nothing's going to happen."
Kit nodded weakly. It took him a while, but he eventually managed to fall into a light sleep in Marin's arms.
Marin stayed awake for now, holding Kit close for the duration of the storm. They did eventually give in to their urge to sleep, though, resting their head on the boy's.
In the morning, Kit was nowhere to be found. He didn't appear to be anywhere in the room with Marin, but the storm hadn't stopped. Kit had actually gone outside, trying to convince himself that he wasn't scared of the storm by forcing himself out into it, but it only felt like it was making things worse. He was shaking and crying, curled up into a tight ball with his arms around himself.
Marin shifted some as they came into consciousness and realized Kit wasn't with them. They grunted and sat up, the sound of the storm still going taking a bit to register in their mind. Their eyes widened when they saw Kit was no where in the room, grabbing their second cloak and hurrying out the door.
"Kit?" The mage called out as they stepped from the inn, looking around for the small child. They hurried through the storm, looking for the boy still.
"Kit-?!" They knelt down as they came to where the fae was, quick to wrap their cloak around him and scoop him up. They held Kit close to their chest, curling around him some as they hurried back to the shelter of the inn.
Kit sobbed into Marin's chest, clinging tightly to them as he shook violently. He didn't seem to be coherent at the moment, and his eyes were wide with fear. His face was pale, and it didn't look like he was incredibly present. It was difficult for him to focus, but he felt a little better with someone warm to hold onto.
Marin got them both back to their room, keeping their cloak wrapped tightly around Kit and the other hanging from their own shoulders.
"Shh, shh… I've got you Kit, you're safe." Marin held Kit close to themself, gently running their fingers through the boy's hair and letting him cling to the mage. They did their best to hum the same tune they'd heard Kit calming himself down with before, rocking them back and forth.
Kit kept crying quietly for a while, clinging to Marin for dear life. He was terrified, and the storm was continuing outside, so it was impossible for him to fully relax regardless. After several minutes, he started rapidly whispering hushed apologies over and over again.
Marin continued to hum as they held Kit, patting his back softly. They wanted to fix this, but they doubted Kit would be able to handle much at all with the storm going on still.
"Hey… it's not your fault, Kit."
Kit whimpered shakily and clung tighter to Marin. "Hurts… s-so… so sorry…" He whispered weakly. "My fault, my fault… s-shouldn't have gone outside in the storm…"
"It's not your fault, Kit," Marin said softly. "It's not your fault, okay?" The mage held Kit's cheeks, rubbing their thumbs against them.
Kit hiccuped and sobbed a bit harder, burying his face in Marin's shoulder. "I'm sorry… I'm sorry… s-so sorry… please…"
"I've got you…" Marin moved their hand to rub Kit's back, wrapping their cloak around the both of them more.
"You're okay, nothing is going to happen to us."
Kit finally started to calm down a bit when the rain subsided, but he was still very jittery and tense. He was shaking violently, and he hadn't loosened his tight hold on Marin.
Marin hummed softly as Kit started to calm down, holding the child close to their chest.
"See, we're okay," they promised. "I have you…"
Kit nodded weakly, breathing heavily as he struggled to relax properly. He started whispering apologies again, a few more tears rolling down his pale cheeks.
"You don't have to apologize…" Marin tucked Kit under their chin, wiping the tears away.
"I'm glad you're okay, Kit. I've got you."
Kit sighed shakily, his breathing still labored as he slowly relaxed. "I… I wasted so much of our time…" He whispered. "Just… b-because I did something so stupid…"
"You didn't waste any time," Marin said softly. They held the boy close, humming. "You didn't do anything stupid."
Kit whined softly, clinging to Marin. "Mmmnh… but I did… it was a stupid thing to do and it's my fault we aren't out traveling right now…"

"We aren't traveling right now because it's raining," Marin said softly. "We shouldn't be traveling in the rain, whether or not it scares you." Marin ran their fingers gently up and down Kit's back, Willow touching his hair. He would be okay.
