Mara nodded slowly as he explained the new word, though she wasn't going to try to pronounce it. “I see. Thank you for clearing that up.”
Mara nodded slowly as he explained the new word, though she wasn't going to try to pronounce it. “I see. Thank you for clearing that up.”
"You're welcome." Darius offered a smile, settling back down in his seat. "Really, I don't see how there's really anything bad that comes from this arrangement- you yourself said that you only take things I wouldn't notice gone."
Mara gave a small smile back. “Yeah. It's safer than taking something that would be noticed.” she said, looking at all the little things that made up parts of her home. “If I took something important… Well, I’ve seen people nearly tear their houses apart looking for it.”
"Yeah…" Darius nodded some, thinking of what he would do if he lost something important to him.
"People can get attached to seemingly the smallest of things, too, sometimes for no real reason."
“I’m sure there is a reason, it just might not make much sense to someone else.” Mara shrugged. “But you can see what I live on.” she added with a light chuckle. “The things I get attached to are all handmade.”
"Right, of course." Darius hummed some, tilting his head a bit to see what Mara was talking about.
"And that makes sense, for sure."
Mara’s home was well organized in a way that was similar to that of a full-sized human. Though it was sparsely decorated. The main room that he had the best view of was a combination of a kitchen, dining, and living room with a single table and a couple of chairs. There was a small fireplace/stove against one wall but it was hard to tell exactly what it was made from but it was well ventilated since no smoke ever made it into Darius’s part of the house. In certain areas of her home where small collections of things she borrowed; a bundle of matches and sticks near the fireplace, a stack of tin foil held down by a paper clip, and a large bag with some white fuzz sticking out the top, most likely cotton. There were even a couple of woven baskets, most holding pieces of fabric and string that the tiny girl had gathered.
It wasn't hard to see how much work Mara had put into her home. Not only that, but how much it had taken her to get those things. It wasn't something he had been able to imagine doing himself, but here Mara was, living through it as her normal day to day.
"Yeah…" Darius agreed softly again.
Mara nodded a little, feeling a little bashful as she realized that almost everything she had taken was on display to someone she had taken from. Not all of it, but lately. “I… I feel like I should apologize for… this.” she said softly with a small gesture towards her home. “It’s just… It’s all I know to survive.”
"Ah, no, it's okay, really! If I didn't know anything was gone at all when you took it, I obviously didn't need it, or care. It's fine, really, you can have anything you want. I promise it isn't something you need to apologize for."
Mara nodded gratefully, though she still felt awkward about being caught. Or this was probably close to what being caught in the act felt like. “Thank you.”
"You're welcome, Mara…" Darius offered a small smile, shifting in his seat to be sitting up more.
Mara smiled shyly back at him. “You really don't mind?” she asked, still not used to the idea of having someone ten times her size know about her and what she did.
"I really don't," Darius confirmed. "Really, even now you don't have to ask if you want to take anything, it's okay." Darius offered an assuring hum, looking to Mara.
Mara smiled a little more at that. “Thank you. That's very generous of you.” she said sincerely even if it was just the little things.
"You're welcome." Darius had been about to say it was the least, again, but he remembered what Mara had said. How while it wasn't big to him, it didn't mean the same for her.
Mara couldn't think of anything more to say to that but she smiled at him again for all he was offering.
Darius smiled back, unsure what there was to say either. He glanced away, his smile settling into something small and sweet.
“You have a nice smile.” Mara noted out loud. She didn't care if Darius heard her now that he knew about her. It almost felt a little freeing. As long as it was just the two of them, she didn't have to try so hard to be silent. Though she would still take the same precautions if anyone else came to visit him.
Darius looked up when Mara spoke, a gentle blush coming to his cheeks.
"Your's is too," the man said in turn. It'd take a bit of getting used to, hearing Mara from time to time, but Darius would do it if it meant her life was easier.
Mara smiled softly at the compliment, even if he was just saying it as a reply to hers, as she started blushing a little as well. “Thank you.”
"You're welcome!" Darius chuckled some, a hand going through his hair.
Mara laughed a little with him, wondering what they were going to do now. Obviously, she had made plans before all this happened but now it felt like those had just disappeared in light of the situation.
Darius fell quiet, looking at his coffee table and the piles of work there for him.
"I think I need to get to work," he finally noted, looking up at Mara.
Mara hummed a little, looking back at him and the papers on his table. “Oh, you mean putting those away?” she asked innocently.
