Mara let out a slow breath and smiled at him, a little nervous, before she carefully stood up and climbed onto his palm.
Darius lifted Mara up when she stepped up, keeping his hands flat for her to stand on and moving her to his chest before beginning to walk.
"How are you doing?"
“I’m alright.” Mara assured him as she sat down. There was just something about standing on an uneven, soft, and slightly moving surface that made her… It just felt safer to be sitting. “How are you doing?” she echoed, looking up at him.
"Better, now that I know you're okay." Darius smiled softly, holding Mara to himself still. He stepped out before turning to head to the kitchen.
"How hungry are you?"
Mara blushed softly but smiled back, surprised and touched that he was so concerned about her. Since she had moved out there had been no one else to care about her like that other than her family. “Oh… I don't know.” she shrugged. “Not very, I guess.”
"Okay, then," Darius said, thinking a moment. He stepped into the kitchen, looking down.
"Is that your hook?" He asked when he spotted it.
Mara perked up at the question and looked over his hand, towards the floor. “I think so.” she said when she saw the faint shine of metal. “It’s hard to really tell from here.”
"Here." Darius carefully knelt down, lowering his hand for Mara to be able to reach the hook if she wanted to. "How's this?"
Mara hadn't expected Darius to bring her closer to the floor, but once the height was manageable she skillfully jumped out of his hands and gratefully picked up her hook. “I was afraid I’d lost it after he dropped me.” she admitted softly before turning back to her friend.
"Well, I'm glad we so easily found it then!" Darius smiled, squatting down still with his hands on his knees.
“So am I.” Mara smiled brightly as she started wrapping up the string. “I can't imagine trying to get around without it.” she admitted, turning back to face Darius… as best as she was able to, being on the floor.
"Oh, so that's what it's for?" Darius offered his hand to Mara when she had finished up, still mostly focused on their mission of getting food.
Mara nodded and climbed back onto his hand. “Uh-huh. I use it to get to higher places all the time. Tabletops, shelves… It's not easy to reach those areas when they tower over you.” she explained.
"Ah, that makes a lot of sense," Darius admitted. He stood, lifting Mara up and offering to set her down on the counter.
Mara smiled a little, glad he seemed to understand or at least was trying to understand, and slid her arm through the loop of string so that it rested on her shoulder. When Darius brought her up to the counter, she nodded in thanks and carefully stepped onto the more firm surface.
Darius smiled as well, turning when she was off to look in the fridge.
"What to make…"
Mara walked around a little to peer at the large cold box. She’d always wondered what was kept in there. Food, obviously, since she’d seen Darius and others like him use it… but it was beyond impossible for her to even try herself.
Darius moved to the side a bit to give Mara a better view of the fridge.
"Anything look interesting to you?" He offered.
Honestly, everything looked interesting in there. Mara was able to recognize a couple of things but most of the stuff was foreign to her. “I… I don't know.” she admitted softly. “I really don't need much.”
Darius nodded, holding his chin in his hand.
"Mm…" He shifted through some of the things, eventually coming out with a bin of strawberries. "How does some of this sound?"
Mara’s eyes widened at the sight of the ripe red berries and nodded eagerly. “Oh, yes please.” she agreed. Fresh fruit like that was a rarity and a real treat for her and, she imagined, others like her.
"Okay then, strawberries it is!" Darius chuckled some, carrying the strawberries over to the sink to rinse them off. He hummed some as he did, setting a few to the side once they were cleaned.
Mara watched his actions and waited eagerly. Once he had set a few of the berries aside, she slowly walked over to them and started examining them. It was more out of habit than anything else, for her to check the food before taking it, plus she was looking forward to having one.
Darius sat the container of strawberries down when he had enough for them, looking to Mara.
"Would you like me to cut one up for you?" He offered, pulling open a drawer to pull a knife out.
Mara looked up at the question and nodded. “Yes, please.” she said, taking a few steps back so she wouldn't be in the way.
