Darius looked back with his small little smile, lowering his phone to his lap. His blush didn't leave, though, running a hand through his hair.
Mara smiled back with another soft chuckle. It was a funny feeling, being the one to make someone like him blush. It made her feel like they were more similar than the size between them separating them. If that made any sense.
Darius chuckled some as well, letting his hand rest on the back of his neck as he looked up at the woman in the wall. He really did just think of her as another person, if a bit… smaller…
Mara leaned back a little in her seat wondering what to do or say now. As far as housework she was pretty caught up… for the day, at least. “So… What was that your friend threw at you earlier?” she asked, remembering the brown bag.
"Oh, the McDonalds? It's food." Darius looked over at the bag on the couch, moving over to grab it. Coming back, he opened it up, pulling out a fry to show Mara.
“Is it good?” she asked, looking at the piece of food. Mara thought she recognized it a little… maybe she found one under the couch at some point, but it was unlikely that she had taken it.
"I think so," Darius said. "Here, want to try?" He held the fry up for Mara, glad he'd chosen one of the softer, not hard as a rock ones.
“Uh, sure.” Mara shrugged accepting the food. It was a little awkward as it was almost the same size as herself… maybe a little shorter but still. She carefully ripped out a small piece from the side and bit into it.
"What do you think?" Darius asked with a soft hum as he watched. He picked up a couple of fries for himself, popping them into his mouth.
Mara gave a soft hum at the flavors before answering. “It’s pretty good. The outside is a little greasy but the inside is so warm and creamy.” she smiled back at him.
"Yes, I must agree. There are healthier versions that aren't so greasy, I could buy some later if you'd like to try them," Darius offered.
Mara blinked a couple times at him. Just when she thought this day couldn't get any stranger… True, he had said something about how she would be able to continue her life as pretty much normal, but she hadn't expected him to offer to… Do that. “Well, if you're going to… I mean, I do like these so… You don't have to go out of your way or anything.” she said, stumbling through her words.
Darius held back a chuckle.
"I'll bring some back tomorrow after I come from school." The man smiled, eating another fry.
Mara couldn't help but blush as she took another bite. She wasn't used to being offered anything since all she had were things she made or gathered on her own. “Thank you.” she said softly.
"You're welcome!" Darius had always ended up giving his friends gifts. It was just what he did. He smiled a bit at her blush, glancing away for a moment.
Mara smiled softly, still blushing. It would, honestly, take her another day to even finish this fry but she wasn't going to completely turn him down.
Darius had no idea Mara would keep the fry. For him, if he couldn't finish something he knew wouldn't be as good later, he'd just throw it away. He'd never had to go hungry before or knew what it meant to have to keep every scrap of leftover.
For Mara, it was all about survival. She didn't have the same luxury he did. She couldn't just go to a store and get something fresh. And her food supply was almost always something of a gamble depending on what she found. As long as the food hadn't molded or completely rotted, she could always find another way to prepare the salvageable parts.
Darius sat the bag of food down, reaching in to pull the burger out. He hummed, looking up again. He wanted to provide what he could to her, and he could see no need to keep every single crumb of usable food.
Mara looked back up at him and her jaw dropped when she saw the size of the… other thing he pulled out of the bag. “What is that?” she asked in shock.
"This? It's a burger." Darius unwrapped the food, holding it up for Mara to be able to see it up close.
"It's got meat, and cheese, and other toppings."
“It’s huge!” she exclaimed, looking at the burger. Reasonably, Mara knew that because Darius was so much bigger than herself it would make sense that his stomach would be as well. She wasn't trying to be rude, she was mostly just surprised.
Darius smiled, just a bit, when he saw Mara's reaction to the food.
"They make bigger ones, too, I've seen one's as big as my forearm is long," the man explained.
“Big… Are you serious?” she asked, trying to wrap her mind around that mental image. “What do you do with all that food?”
