Tessa moved away from him to spin in a slow circle, taking in her surroundings. I suppose cities can make an effort to be presentable. "It's a helluva lot better than the one we live in," she agreed.
Tessa moved away from him to spin in a slow circle, taking in her surroundings. I suppose cities can make an effort to be presentable. "It's a helluva lot better than the one we live in," she agreed.
"yeah! there are a good couple of things we can do here. there's a park that's really pretty, and it's near downtown which has markets and other events and such." he smiled at her, crossing his arms low and relaxed,
"are you surprised?"
"Very surprised. I expected another ramen place." She winked at him with a bright grin, coming back up to him once she was done looking around.
he scuffed at the ground, looking back up slyly.
"well, i never though you could handle this kind of luxury. wow, being in the same vicinity as a better-managed district! i'm starstruck."
he teased, fake-swooning.
"it's strange." he mentioned as they got started walking again. "all this started off with my clumsy ass careening into your stitched up back."
(sorry if it gets weird for a hot second im trying to bring his personality back in)
(It's okay)
She laughed at his swooning, falling into step with him. "Oh, I was piiiiissed. I had forgotten my Doritos back at the place I robbed. You wanna know how I got like that in the first place?"
"if you'd like to share, absolutely." he chirped, to anyone who didn't know him he'd seem sarcastic.
"It's not a badass exploit through the jaws of a secret government facility if that's what you were thinking." She paused for dramatic effect. "I fell off a chair."
he processed for a moment before bursting into laughter.
"how- how did you get cut deep enough for stitches on a chair?"
"IN MY DEFENCE," she started, "That fucking chair really wanted me dead! I swear it wasn't broken when I first sat in it, but when I leaned back just a small bit, the fucking thing snapped and I landed on the edge of a coffee table–the sharp edge. Straight up my back. Gravity and chairs are a bitch."
"yiiiiikes. that must've hurt like hell. and that's a lot different than i expected." as they progressed through the city, the glowing new buildings made way for downtown.
you could tell the buildings were old, but they were well-maintained and updated. outdoor fairy lights were strung between rooftops, and the architecture was detailed and beautiful. he looked proud, glancing over to tessa. he figured she might like this part.
Tessa gawked at the city as they walked. She appreciated architecture when done right, and this was definitely done right. This part of the city was breathtaking. The lights. The buildings. The sheer skill and detail the builders had put into their work.
he smiled when he saw her face, flipping his free hand out towards the scene. "pretty, right? my parents live somewhere in this part. those are the apartments!"
he thrust his hand towards a brick building, complete with ledges and arched doorways. "there's a few bars, an old fashioned theatre called 'the princess', and a little marketplace kind of thing. honestly, if you see something you want to check out, just say the word!"
"Like I said: Surprise me. I can always come here and explore on my own time." She smiled at him, genuinely happy that he took her here. It was better than anything she had thought of. If she were being honest, her standards were laughably low.
he shrugged, thinking again. "ah, hey. that'd be nice. this way!" he turned suddenly, leading her through the bigger streets until they reached an overview of what seemed like a park.
down the stone steps, winding through until they reached a remote spot with some benches in front of a man-made lake. a goose honked at them, but made no other effort to interact.
"and if you get hungry, the restaurant's right over there, and i'd be happy to treat you to something." he gave a trademark grin, only this time his eyes were visible. they sparkled, and he walked to sit with tessa.
She smiled at him as well, eyes bright as she gazed at him. How was it that he got past her walls so quickly and seized her heart before she even knew it?
She came up to him and loosely slid her arms around his waist. "Thank you, Nik."
She wasn't just talking about this date. It was the fact that he cared enough to go out of his way to make her happy. It was him being by her side even at her lowest. It was the support he gave regarding her past and her present goals. It was the laughter and fun times. It was him dealing with her drunken ass with more patience she deserved.
nik immediately returned the embrace. "thank you, tessa."
for putting up with me, he meant. for seeing past the sly smile, butterfly knife and bullet scars. for showing him how to properly love again. he expected her to leave him in the dust after that drunken night together, but she kept contact. just that surprised him.
She smiled as she buried her face into the crook of his neck, slightly tightening her hold. Who knew that they'd end up like this? Going on a date and spilling their feelings with just two simple words? Actually enjoying each other's presence?
he stood, hugging her for a while, and eventually stepped back just enough to lay a kiss on her forehead. he didn't quite know how to go about actually kissing her, but that's alright.
"I think we should continue on with this date," she murmured, eyes flicking around his face for any sign of what he was thinking.
"and what would you mean by that?" he asked playfully, leaning back but keeping his arms loosely around her waist.
"I mean, did you have something else planned besides just standing here?" She was feeling much more lighthearted than she had been in a long time–and it was great. It'd been too long, and she couldn't even remember a time she was happy like this.
he looked out over the lake.
"festival of lights should start soon. see the cords?" he pointed out some hanging glass lights, as well as their dark cords wrapped around poles and in branches. the small fountain in the middle of the lake was to be lit up as well.
"it's a celebration, of the city. the wonderers of our district built this place a long time ago, but it was never an official district until recently. ain't that cool?"
Tessa nodded, her gaze curiously following where he pointed. "Really cool. I just can't believe I never found this place before. I'm seriously gonna kick myself later today."
"awh, don't do that. you have a job that keeps you decently in place, and there's not many assholes around here to assassinate, and there's no secret underground labs to be heard of." he bumped her shoulder with his.
"honestly, when i get too old to keep the journalism up i think i'll move here."
"Ever consider that I just want a break from all that?" she asked, kinda sorta serious. She looked around again, constantly awestruck with the beauty of this part of the city. She had always told herself that once her mission was complete–that all of the labs and the scientists running the experiments were done with–she would remove herself from the Mafia and just settle into a somewhat normal life. Go far away from her past; away from the life of crime; be free from the constant fear that a dagger was hovering over her back.
This place reminded her of that promise to herself. This part of the city struck her as a place filled with wonder and light. A place devoid of the darkness and corruption threatening to sink their claws and roots into its foundation. She didn't want to admit it out loud, but she found herself considering the same thing as what Nik had said. Move here once it was all over. Rid herself of the shackles keeping her contained to that rotten and corrupted part of the city. Go someplace where her name wasn't uttered with fear.
