"yeah, me too. you got anything going on today?" he tossed his head, stretching his arms in front of him.
"yeah, me too. you got anything going on today?" he tossed his head, stretching his arms in front of him.
"Nothing planned. You have anything in mind?" So they were just going to ignore last night's confessions? Alright then. She could do that.
"i was thinking we could do something. i'd like to take you on a proper date." he said nonchalantly, crossing his arms over his chest.
She turned on the stool so that she was properly facing him, pulling her legs up so that she was hugging them against her chest. "That sounds nice." She said it casually, as if he were talking about the weather, but her heart was beating erratically.
"alright! where would you want to go?" he asked. honestly, he was excited as all hell, but he was also still tired. he was grateful, though. it kept him looking calm.
She rested her chin on her knees, looking vaguely amused. "You're the one asking me out. Shouldn't you pick the place?"
he flushed.
"well i thought i should have your input. don't want to take you somewhere you don't like."
"Movies, food, amusement parks, concerts, food, zoos…" She ticked them off one by one as she spoke. "I'm a simple woman, really. Anything will do."
"really? we could, uh…" he dry-swallowed, thinking quickly. "there's a theatre nearby, putting on the phantom of the opera. there's also said to be comets tonight or, if that's too much, we can just pick a restaurant."
She smiled at him. It was a kind smile that she rarely used, and it was even rarer for her to share it. "Nik?
he looked up, flush still prominent on his face. "yeah?"
She lowered her legs so they were dangling off the stool, her hands braced on the outside of her thighs, holding on to the edge of the stool. "Surprise me."
"oh. i really should have given this more thought beforehand." he laced his fingers together again, pressing his mouth into a hard line.
"i know! hold on, i think the public would like it if you'd change into something a little more covering, but you do you. i'll be right back." he walked back to put his actual shirt back on, thinking of how he'd execute this date.
She tilted her head, looking in the direction where Nik had disappeared. "Does that mean fancy or no?" she mused to herself.
he came back out, still buttoning his vest.
"if you're wondering if you should dress fancy, no. nobody's really paying attention over there, and you'll probably need to move around decently at some point."
"So decent casual? I can work with that. Be back in a minute." She hopped off the stool and headed upstairs into her room.
Once in her room, she put her hands on her hips and stared at her closet. "Well shit."
nik looked at his turned-off phone, wondering if he should ask j to borrow their bike. is she okay with public transport? will it make her think less of me?
Tessa grabbed some clothes and changed into them. Cream-colored skinny jeans with a nice longsleeved purple blouse, as well as a pair of sandals that she had completely forgotten about. She brushed her hair and fluffed it out, staring at herself in the vanity mirror. I think this is good. She came downstairs.
nik watched her come down, giving her a thumbs up as she walked. when she reached him, he huffed a little before asking her the question.
"so, are you good with public transport? i can always convince j to lend me their bike?"
"Public transport is fine," she assured him.
"nice. come on. i was thinking the subway, but you'd probably prefer to take the bus?"
She opened her mouth, then closed it. "I can do the subway, but I might need a distraction." She looked a little sheepish.
"here. we can play one of those stupid text games, like that 8ball pool thing." he offered her his hand to hold while they walked.
She smiled and took it, walking a tad closer than needed. "Works for me."
after the subway ride, they got out at a station. they were a long way from home, and when they emerged from the station he gestured his arm in a wide arc at the glowing city in front of them.
"welcome! to the 9th district. i'm not aware of their nickname yet, but it's a lot better than the one we livein."
