Sebastian nodded, shoulders relaxing under a wave of relief. “I’m glad.” He hesitated, a question on the tip of his tongue.
Sebastian nodded, shoulders relaxing under a wave of relief. “I’m glad.” He hesitated, a question on the tip of his tongue.
Devon glanced over at him with a small smile. "Are you okay?" she asked gently.
He tilted his head slightly, brow furrowed. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
Devon shrugged and faced forward again, her cheeks turning light pink. "You just looked like you wanted to say something… And I was wondering if your head was hurting or something like that."
“Oh, no, I’m fine.” Sebastian paused, wringing his hands. “A question came to mind, but I’m not going to ask it.”
"Oh. All right… Sure," Devon said, nodding slowly. Well, now she was curious. What had he wanted to ask?
That’s an invasive question, you prick, he told himself harshly, turning away for a moment. “Sorry.”
"You don't have to apologize, Sebastian. I get it. There are a lot of things you don't know about me, and today was weird," Devon said with a shrug as she pulled her keys out.
He mirrored her shrug, brushing yet more hair out of his forehead.
Still curious about whatever it was he wanted to ask, but I'm also not sure if I want him to ask it…
"This is my car," Devon said as they reached it. She stopped and turned to Sebastian, giving him a small smile. "Thank you, again, for everything."
“No problem,” Sebastian told her, returning the smile. “Thank you.”
"Why are you thanking me?" Devon asked, her voice holding a bit of laughter. "I haven't done anything."
He shook his head. “That’s where you’re wrong. You— how do I say this. You wanted to spend time with me today. I don’t… really have any friends. That meant a lot to me. God, that sounds pathetic but there it is.”
Oh…
Devon blinked a few times and smile at him softly. "I enjoy spending time with you, Sebastian. And it's not pathetic. I understand that, too. I've kind of… lost track of all my old friends, but they weren't very good friends, either," she said with a shrug. "But I'm glad I can be your friend… We– We are friends, right?"
“I sure hope so,” he said with a slight grin. “Are we?”
"I'd like to be friends," Devon said softly, smiling back at him. "So… Yes. We are."
The grin broadened, more genuine than it had been in a long time. “I’m glad. I’m really glad.”
"Me, too," Devon said, a light dusting of red appearing on her cheeks as she grinned back at him. "Would you like to see Layla again? I'm sure she'd love to hang out with you."
“That… would be nice,” Sebastian admitted, rubbing at the nape of his neck sheepishly. “When can I see her?”
"Well… I'm going to go pick her up right now… Do you maybe want to come over?" Devon suggested with a shrug.
Come… over. Into her house. She wanted him to come into her house. Sebastian stared at the car for a full three seconds. Cars.. He had always hated cars.
But… Devon was trusting him. Trusting him, to come into her home. He smiled.
“Sure, sounds great.”
Devon's smile widened a bit. "Great. Do you want me to give you the address so you can meet me there?"
He relaxed visibly. No cars. Thank god. “Sure, yeah.”
"It's 20731, Maple Avenue. I'm suite 23, on the second floor," Devon said. "Do you want me to write it down for you, or will you remember it?"
“I’ll remember,” he replied. “Thanks, Devon.”
