“I think he’s just oblivious,” I snickered. “I mean, I wouldn’t even be surprised if he had never dated or liked anyone before.”

Then I laughed at his statement.

“That would be hilarious,” I shook my head.

@blue_topaz

"I mean, he's probably never dated because of betrothal and arranged marriages with wealthy families," I pointed out, stifling a chuckle. "But yeah, he probably doesn't know what a crush feels like."

“I guess life of a Prince sucks,” I sighed. “I sometimes pity the prince. Anyway, enough of this talk. Let’s do something else.”

[TIME SKIP - Elle's POV, one day later]

Four days. Four long, miserable, nerve-wracking days without Colton.

After the King had sent his summon, his son had just… disappeared. Never come back to our dormitory. I was left without someone to train me, without the person who had slowly been becoming my friend, and to make matters worse—Nobody else seemed to care. Andreas and Kaden were mildly concerned, sure, but they brushed it off as 'Princely Duties'. But for four days? Not to mention the fact that he was still sick!

It had taken me roughly twenty-four hours to deduce why I was so upset over his absence. A whole day of staring aimlessly at his door, of wracking my brains, of trying to figure out why I cared.

When the realization struck me… God, I don't remember ever feeling so oblivious—or stupid—in my life.

I had a stupid schoolgirl crush. On the Crown Prince. Of all the moronic, stereotypical, utterly pointless things for my heart to waste its time creating, it had to be that.

Now, three days later, my thoughts were occupied almost entirely by him. It wasn't exactly a hardcore crush yet… More of a slight fluttery, flustered feeling whenever I pictured him. Things could still be salvaged; I was sure that it would fade eventually.

But now, as I knocked on the senior Fire Magic teacher's office door… I wasn't so sure.

Mr. Andrews looked up at the knock on his door, furrowing his eyebrows.

“Come in,” he called out, setting the confidential papers aside.

Colton’s POV:

When my eyes opened, I was in total darkness. My head hammered wildly as if someone was constantly striking it. I was chained to a wall, perhaps, because I could feel the harsh surface dig into my back.

”Key…” I called out to my partner, but heard absolutely nothing in reply. I panicked. Where was Key? What happened to Key? I know he was alive—I could feel him, but where was he?

“Oh, you’re awake…” a feminine voice murmured. “Too early. Continue sleeping, little Princeling. You’ve helped us a lot so far. There’s just one small thing we’ll need your help in…”

I felt something flood my system before I lost consciousness.

Once I heard the teacher call out, I knew it was too late to turn back. Gingerly, I pulled the door open and slipped inside, pulling a mask of polite, if slightly timid, interest onto my face.

"Mr. Andrews?" I lingered by the doorway, eyes skimming over the walls of the unfamiliar classroom. Everywhere I looked were rolling chalkboards, posters and diagrams written in glowing red and black ink on crinkling parchment paper. I nearly gagged on the overwhelming stench of smoke as I closed the door behind me, my feet stirring a few stray ashes sprinkling the dark, slate floor.

The teacher blinked before he recognized the student.

“Oh, Elliot, the Type A student,” he set his writing utensil down. “Is there something you want? Something you don’t understand?”

@blue_topaz

Surprise flashed briefly over my features—despite my newfound fame within the walls of the school, I was still caught off guard when a stranger knew me by name.

"No, not exactly," I replied, taking a few steps closer to his desk. "I was just wondering—Prince Colton trains me daily, and he's one of my roommates, but he hasn't been seen for the last four days. You're his primary teacher—I was hoping you could tell me where to find him?"

Deleted user

Mr. Andrews was careful not to let his expression slip.

“Ah, his Royal Highness,” he hummed, nodding. “He needed to leave for personal business. It’s to do with the King and his family, so I’m afraid I can’t share details.”

@blue_topaz

"Of course." I nodded respectfully, filing the information away for later examination, despite the fact that my worries had been increased tenfold. Had someone died? Was everything okay?

"Do you know when he'll be back?" I asked cautiously.

Deleted user

“I’m afraid not,” Mr. Andrews responded slowly. “I’m merely a teacher. The King doesn’t share such information with me. If you want to continue your training, I can ask another senior of yours to help you.”

@blue_topaz

The idea of another senior training me sounded awful, but I knew that I had to keep myself fit and practice with the help of someone more experienced.

"That would be helpful, if it's not too much trouble," I answered politely.

Deleted user

“All right, I’ll ask someone then,” he smiled. “Anything else?”

@blue_topaz

"That's it. Thank you, sir," I responded politely, inclining my head in the most respectful manner possible due to the unbearable stench of the classroom. How could Colton stand it?

[TIME SKIP - One day later]*

Darkness.

All the woman knew was darkness.

Shadows, choking the air. Silence—a horrible, stomach-churning hush. Always present when the terrifying rumbles and unnerving whispers weren't floating through the empty space that she called her home. She was a solitary being, had been that way for a long time…. but now, she was in the presence of someone else. A young man on the cusp of adulthood. Trapped in a web of nightmares.

Trapped, until she freed him with a harsh slap of her hand

Colton’s POV:

I woke up with a gasp, my skin numb, vision blurry. Just like my first time waking up here, I couldn’t see anything but darkness.

”Key…” I called out again, too weak to fight against the chains keeping me still. Once again, I couldn’t find him. I felt empty, hallow, a void eating me up. Without Key, I know I would go insane.

Deleted user

I hissed, head snapping up, mouth in a snarl.

“Where’s Key?” I hissed, struggling against my bonds. “What did you do to him?”

@blue_topaz

Slim, icy hands danced over his broad shoulders until one moved sharply up, grabbing onto his chin and wrenching it skywards. Slowly, almost gently, the rough pad of a thumb smoothed over his growling mouth.

"Breathe, Colton. Pull yourself together."

Deleted user

I wrestled against the bonds, her hands like acid to the touch.

“Don’t touch me,” I hissed. “Where is Key? What did you do to him? If you hurt him, I will rip you apart. If there’s even a scratch on him—“

@blue_topaz

"Shh…."

He could hear the tip of a nail scraping against the metal links of the chains binding him as the woman trailed a finger down the front of his chest.

"Does anything hurt, Colton? Do you feel…." Her voice sweetened slightly, a smile audible between the words she spoke. "Different?"

Deleted user

“The only thing I feel is the urge to rip your hands apart,” I snarled, growling, anger burning deep within me. “Tell me where Key is.”

@blue_topaz

"Poor Colton…" she murmured quietly. "Anger isn't going to get you anywhere. Your bondling is safe…. for now. Tell me, do you feel any different? Remember that your life depends on the answer you give me.

Deleted user

“Do whatever you want to me,” I growled. “But touch Key and I will burn you alive.”

I felt a pang in my head, a deep urge to bow my head, but I fought against it. Even as it felt like burning, I fought against it.

@blue_topaz

”You’d die and leave your bondling alone in the world?”

Was this woman making fun of him with her sweet tone—or was she just completely insane?
