Name: Elle Amberly (goes by Elliot at the school)

Nicknames: Eli (when she’s masquerading as Elliot)

Age: 17

Appearance: Light blonde curls in large, slightly disorganized ringlets, a middle part and a widow’s peak. Before she attended the school, they fell more than halfway down her back, but now that she’s masquerading as a male, her hair is cut short (but her curls are more than visible). Creamy skin, easily burnt, faint freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks, a peachy undertone around her cheeks, nose, and shoulders. Large, hazel-green eyes, long but light-toned eyelashes, full, soft lips. Her features are generally delicate, but without her long hair, her appearance is uncannily androgynous, which is definitely a benefit because of her mission. 5’7”, a relatively flat chest for her age, subtle curves, a mostly athletic figure despite a bit of leftover baby fat.

Personality: Headstrong, extroverted, energetic, very determined and very, very stubborn. Artistic, a hyperactive mind, always wants to be involved. Thrives trough teamwork, courageous, doesn’t get scared easily, mischievous, a bit of a joker.

Flaws: Too prideful, holds grudges for too long, stubborn, impatient

Likes: Chocolate (white and milk), marbles designs, soft colours, peaches, acrylic painting, porcelain, whipped cream, sugar cubes, rhythmic gymnastics (with ribbons), the clarinet, martial arts, chimpanzees

Dislikes: Thick novels and textbooks, staying still for extended periods of time, tight, constricting clothing, gender roles (that’s definitely not to say that she dislikes typically feminine things), being coddled

Other: Left-handed, good marks in her classes, flexible. Good at fencing.

Background: Twin brother named Elliot, a strict mother and playful father, does an older form of rhythmic gymnastics…?

Other Weapons: Crossbow, rapier

Bonded Creature:

Name: Scylla

Personality Type: Quirky, energetic, determined, hardworking, likes attention.

@blue_topaz

Blue skies streaked with soft clouds. Endless fields of rippling green grass. The muted sound of waves crashing against the surf.

That was what greeted me as I pressed my face against the window of my train compartment, stomach twisted into knots. My head was spinning, mind alive with a million different thoughts that exploded like fireworks against my skull, my heart pounding out the same chug-a-chug-a rhythm of the sleek locomotive as it moved along the countryside. I spread my fingers wide against the glass, leaving faint prints behind; my slim hands were clammy, sweating, and shaking.

I was immensely excited, of course I was—I was the first woman to attend Rubinem Academy in all of history—but my joy was largely overshadowed by the crushing fear that had suddenly overtaken me. News headlines flashed before my mind's eye: Elle Amberly killed after major infraction of the law. Was that to be my future? Any females who attempted to perform a Blood Oath, the most sacred of bonding rituals, were caught and killed. Was I to join them?

Hanged.
Drowned.
Burned at the stake.

I shook my worries away, chastising myself. It was going to be okay. As far as everyone knew, my name was Elliot Amberly, and my twin brother back at home was me. I'd been practising his impersonation for months, rehearsed deepening my voice a few notes, studied the traditional male arts, bound my already small bosom, cut my waist-length curls. No one would find out, as long as I was careful. And I had to be, because it was not only my life at stake if I failed. The lives of hundreds of thousands of women could be changed because of this. Because of my mission. And I was determined to succeed, to give half the population a choice.

Finally, after forty painstaking, anxiety-inducing minutes, the train crested a hill, and the Academy came into view. My breath caught in my throat, eyes widening.

"There it is…." I breathed. The ticket to my future. The education of my dreams.
And finally, after so long, it was in reach.

I stared at the new students from my place on the stage, eyes sweeping coldly across each individual. The boys looked hopeful, excited and rather… dull. My eyes flashed in boredom. Soon enough, these kids would realize the dangers of being in this academy. They would realize that they are not worthy of the ritual.

Half of these students would be rejected. A small group would die after the ritual. Only few would remain.

This academy wasn’t always like this. Founded by the Savior, it expressed the importance of ending wars between the creatures from the other realm. It showed us that even we were capable enough to bond with them, to harness their powers, to live in harmony. It encouraged children of both sexes to participate, to learn.

Until a few years later the laws changed, forbidding women from ever performing the Blood Oath, the sacred ritual that let you summon your partner for life, or until death pulls you apart. There are different versions of the same story. Each and every woman who performed the ritual either went insane, or were devoured by the creature they summoned. They say creatures do not take kindly being summoned by those of lesser power. In order to protect women, the Savior’s son put up laws. A woman found guilty… would not live the other day.

“Welcome to Rubinem Academy, boys,” my father, the King, greeted. “Where you can meet your dreams… Those who came with the ideals of performing spectacularly, I assure you, this would not be as easy as it seems. Rubinem Academy demands utmost respect, obedience, hard work, and the ability to perform well.”

He went on, explaining the rules and regulations, the expectations he has from the students before he finally stopped talking.

“I invite my son, your future King, to give you advice, for he recently performed the sacred ritual himself. Prince Colton, if you please.”

Heaving a sigh, I walked up to the podium, eyes cold as I looked at the students once again. The excitement in their eyes did not die out even a little.

“As my father said, Rubinem Academy is the place where you can meet your dreams,” I started in a low voice, my eyes hardening. “… or perish along with them. For those who believe this to be simple and easy, rest assured. You’ll be the first ones going home, or not coming back at all. If you do not have the determination and skills, you will not live to see another day. This Oath, this path in life… is not as simple as it seems. Keep up your attitude and you might find yourself at the end of your road.”

I paused, knowing what I was saying would definitely dampen their spirits. Which, in a way, was my goal. These students needed to recognize the danger they stepped in to. This ritual was not a joke. The lives lost is not a joke.

“Sharpen your eyes, create a proper motivation, and perhaps we’ll be seeing you with a bondmate after two weeks are over,” I let a hint of smirk cover my features. “And then we’ll welcome you to hell. Work hard.”

@blue_topaz

I stood, straight-backed, in the front-most row of boys. I'm one of you, my posture seemed to radiate, I belong here. And I was determined to prove that I did. I had to pass the Oath. Over a year of hard work and meticulous repetition was not going to go to waste. A chance to change the future of thousands of women was not going to go to waste.

And, despite my slimmer form and higher, more musical voice than the rest of the boys in line, I was confident in the fact that I looked my part. My uniform, a blue jacket, matching breeches, and a crisp white button-down shirt clung to my shape perfectly. My carefully constructed smile, the best kind of balance between confident and humble, raised me above those who wore cocksure, boastful expressions, and not a single one of my hairs was out of place. I was Elliot Fletcher Amberly, no doubt about it.

My eyes caught on a figure at the far edge of the stage. Even at first glance, I knew exactly who it was. The Prince, the future heir to the throne, and (hopefully) one of my future peers. I couldn't help but feel a mix of awe and respect—and not only due to his pretty face and attractive body. The way he held himself….. the experience he seemed to have despite his years….

Then, the King himself began to speak, and my blood ran cold. This was the man that upheld the law. The man that condoned the slaughter of women who wanted nothing more than someone to bond with. Someone to have by their side for the rest of their lives. But he merely turned a blind eye to their tortured screams, paid no heed to their fervent protest and pleas for change.

Had I harboured a death wish, I would have sneered at the sound of his voice, echoing through the majestic hall. But I was smart enough to maintain the same facial expression as before, not missing a single beat. I listened through the entirety of his speech, but when the Prince stepped up to the podium…. I had to admit that I was shocked by his honesty. He wasn't sugar-coating the truth, he was delivering hard facts and preparing us for the immense challenge that lay ahead. This, I definitely approved of.

By the end of the assembly, the two boys on either side of me were shifting nervously, doubt flickering across their features. I let nothing show, only bowed my head in recognition of the royal family and waited to be dismissed.

The first two weeks prior to the Blood Oath, students are informed of the consequences. They are taught according to what they should know, how they should act and how they should perform. This involves reading about multiple creatures, what the prefer, and how to tame them.

This is what they should have learnt at home. This is what they should have been preparing for.

I observed the students preparing, reading from their books, answering questions they should already have learnt. It irritated me to no end at how they came for something that was life-threatening, but they preparing absolutely nothing.

Until my eyes met my junior’s, who had himself seated in the front of the room. He harbored sseemingly soft blond hair that framed his face in curls, the delicate features of his face. But his pretty features were not what caught my attention. It was the way his eyes skimmed the papers, the way his lips twisted upwards as if he recognized the words.

He was someone who had used his time wisely.

“Colton!” I looked in the direction of the teacher, maininting eye contact. As a student, I found it strange to be addressed as the prince, or as ‘your highness.’ I was a student learning from them. Until I rose up the ranks, I would be just a student for them. “Perfect timing! Would you mind showing your bondmate to these students? It would be excellent for them to know what it is that awaits them!”

My eyes swept across the room once again, taking it all the surprised, scared, and lost expressions. Only one face gave me what I needed.

If they make it that far,” I added harshly, choosing not to soften my words. Gentle words, mothering behaviors would not save their lives. My bondmate was not with me at this moment, but…

”Key,” I called out, tapping into the ‘string’, forcing my bondmate to appear in the same room as I was in. The second I called his name, he appeared.

Wings flapping, pitch black eyes meeting mine authoritatively, body the color of coal with red rings decorating his body. The creature associated with flames, my Key.

@blue_topaz

(will they already have met, since they're in the same dorm?)

My eyes trailed down the first few pages of the thick volume, past line after line of tiny, compressed script. So much information packed into a few sheets of fine, gilded paper….. information which I had been studying even before I had been handed the amazing opportunity to come and learn at the Academy. Even as a child, a small girl, my interest in the Oath and the creatures from the Other World had been immense, crowding my thoughts. So my wealthy parents—bless them—had done the natural thing and purchased volume after volume of leather-bound knowledge. I'd poured over each page, memorizing almost all the content by the time I was thirteen. And I had prayed for a change in the law. Oh, how I'd dreamed. Wished on every star. But my seventeenth birthday had drawn nearer, with no hope in sight.

And look at me now. Sitting among the finest students in the kingdom, the Rubinem emblem pinned to my breast, metres away from the Crown Prince. Most people across the entire continent would sell their souls for a chance like this.

Eventually, I snapped my textbook shut, having skimmed the entire chapter and knowing for a fact that I could recite it in my sleep. But just as I lifted my head, my eyes met with those of Prince Colton. My heart skipped a beat—why was he looking at me? Had I done something wrong? Had he somehow caught on to my secret? But just as quickly as he'd seen me, he was looking away, attention snared by our teacher.

And when he called on his bondmate, my heart swelled until it was too large to fit in my ribcage. That was what is was like to have a companion for life. That was what a survivor of the Oath looked like. I grinned, allowing only the tiniest drop of awe to seep across my expression.

“A bondmate,” I started, narrowing my eyes. “Is not just a tool for power. It is a part of your soul—it’s half of you. And when you lose a part of your soul, you undoubtedly lose yourself.”

I was very much aware that I didn’t need to cover this lesson. It was the teacher’s job, but I was given the job to teach them. And what better way to do it by showing them the real thing?

“If you’ve done your research, you should know that these creatures come in different levels, different types. Defenders, healers, attackers, all ranging from one to five. The type of creature you might summon would depend on your power,” I continued, eyes observing the expressions of the students. Key remained silent, his body floating in the air, waiting for command. “If you’re talented enough, you will not need to tap into your bondmate to be able to use your abilities.” I demonstrated by holding out my hand, flames immediately sprouting out, licking my skin but doing no damage. I closed my hand into a fist, the flame dying out. “But trying this without your bondmate close by can end… rather poorly. Now, does anyone have any questions?”

@blue_topaz

The Prince began to speak, and although his words held evident knowledge and value, I was able to practically recite along with him—mentally, of course. Defender, healer, attacker… I would summon a Defender, I was sure of it. If I made it through the sacred ritual, which I had to. The title of Healer didn't quite fit me, I felt a need to be in the fray, protecting, attacking. Either a Defender or an Attacker would come to me.

My father had bonded with a Healer, a large, golden owl with small horns named Archimedes. I'd spent hours studying him, watching them both interact with each other, learning the art of communication and calling despite the fact that I didn't have a bondmate of my own, and believed I never would. My brother, however, was less interested in Healing and more so in subtle Attack and espionage. Elliot had always been the much less lively, energetic child, but over the past year, we'd both begun to fake alterations in our mannerisms in order to make the switch easier.

I realized that my mind had begun to drift and pulled my focus sharply back to Prince Colton just as he was finishing the miniature lesson. His firm, cold voice rang in my ears, and once he'd asked for questions, I raised a decisive hand for permission to speak.

Deleted user

No one raised their hand. Either they were too scared to question me, or they truly had nothing in their brains. I clicked my tongue, thoroughly disappointed. Was this what my juniors were like? Was this how they were taught? Perhaps it was necessary to talk to my father about this. Coming to this school uneducated with the half-hearted dream of finding a bondmate was utterly useless without knowledge. Perhaps I was acting much older than I was, but this is what you get for being expected to rule a kingdom one day. If I wasn't prepared, if I didn't have the experience of leading them, how would I rule a kingdom?

"I pity you, Cole," Key snickered in my mind, and although I did want nothing more than to discipline him, I needed to keep up my blank expression.

"Quiet, Key," I said instead, never once removing my gaze from the students. When no one took the opportunity, I decided I'd wasted enough time.

I was almost going to turn my back on them, thoroughly disappointed when I finally caught a hand being raised in the air. The same boy who displayed the knowledge I wanted to see in these blank kids. I met his eyes and nodded my head, beckoning him to speak.

@blue_topaz

The Prince gave me a nod of recognition, something the majority of the population would only ever dream of receiving, and I lowered my arm and folded both hands on top of my closed textbook. Suddenly very thankful for the intense vocal training I'd undertaken to learn how to deepen my voice, I cleared my throat and spoke, the meticulously assembled expression never once faltering from my face.

"If one has bonded successfully, how quickly does the connection to the bondmate come? Is there a spark from the first moment? Evidently you have to work to gain each other's full trust, but is there something there from the beginning?" This information wasn't in any textbook I'd devoured, and the only answer my father had ever given me was that it was different for each person. I had never been particularly satisfied with his reply.

Deleted user

I thought over his question for a few seconds, contemplating on how I would answer it.

“It’s different for everyone, I suppose,” I finally answered. “But it depends on you. Your bondmate will be loyal. It’s you who needs to gain its trust for it to fight by your side. Respect needs to be earned. If your bondmate does not respect you, you’ll fail.

“The connection you speak of… it’s there. The second you have a successful summoning, your souls will literally combine as one. You will be linked to your bondmate both physically and mentally, and through that link, trust is created. But as I mentioned earlier, respect needs to be established. Without respect, trust is absolutely nothing.”

Key let out a smile, showing his sharp teeth as if to prove my point.

“Your bondmate is your other life. Protect it, and it’ll protect you. But the second you show vile intentions towards it, it’ll fight to take control and will ultimately swallow you. You’ll understand if you get to the Oath.”

@blue_topaz

I nodded in understanding, a wave of satisfaction washing over me at his more than fulfilling answer. Finally, knowledge beyond the books I had committed to heart. "Thank you, Your Highness," I answered, simply and respectfully, bowing my head. I leaned over my thick notebook, which was already overflowing with note upon note from the year of studying, and copied down his reply in shorter terms.

Even now, barely half an hour into class, the strict atmosphere was beginning to wear me down. I'd always been the more playful, mischievous sibling where my brother had been uptight and quiet-spoken, and although we'd done our best to alter the way in which we acted to make the transition smoother, the contrast was still drastic. But no matter, I would uphold the act, right up to the moment where I graduated from the Academy with flying colours and a Level One bondmate.
