"Mm…" Nix nodded a bit, glancing around. "I've never taken care of a tree. I just assumed they were fine with rain and stuff."
"Mm…" Nix nodded a bit, glancing around. "I've never taken care of a tree. I just assumed they were fine with rain and stuff."
"Well, you've got to help them grow straight a lot of the time," Derlik explained, "And sometimes it's easy for them to drown if it rains too much."
"I guess that makes sense… why do they need to grow straight, though? Why does it matter?"
"Well, with managed forests like mine, it allows for there to be more trees, and for them to get equal light. I like to take care of them and make sure they do well."
Nix nodded again, humming softly. "What do you need the trees for, though?"
Derlik paused at the question.
"Well…" How to explain this gently?
Nix looked up at Derlik with a bewildered expression. "Derlik?"
Derlik let out a breath.
"I have a lot of souls I watch over," he finally started. "And sometimes, they want breaks from having to deal with people. So, they ask to be planted in the forest."
"Oh… so they're… soul trees?" He asked, obviously still pretty confused.
"Well, all trees have souls," Derlik pointed out. "They're normal trees."
"Huh?" Nix seemed even more confused now. "What do you mean 'all trees have souls'?"
"Every living thing has a soul, Nix, not just humans," Derlik explained.
"Really? That's wild…" Nix hummed thoughtfully, glancing away. "I thought it was just like… people and animals."
"Mhm, it is," Derlik agreed. He moved to walk out with Nix, humming still. "Every single living thing has one. Not all can think, thank goodness. That would be… strange."
"Yeah… then people would probably feel worse about cutting trees down and stuff."
"Mhm, I an see that for sure." Derlik smiled some, tucking Nix a bit closer as he walked through the garden.
Nix glanced around as he was carried, humming curiously. "Mhmm…" After a few seconds, he started trying to get down.
Derlik looked down as Nix tried to get out of his arms, setting the man down.
"Mm?"
"Wanna see the flowers." Nix squatted down beside the flower beds and bent his head down, examining the flowers curiously.
The deep purple flowers in this area were in bloom, their souls resting in their centers. Derlik knelt down with Nix, smiling softly.
"They are pretty," he said softly.
Nix's tail flicked back and forth as he examined the flowers. "Can I touch?" He asked, looking up at Derlik.
"I don't see why not," Derlik said. He wasn't as… careful, with souls, as Halm was.
Nix hesitated before carefully reaching out to gently touch a flower with one hand. He was very delicate with his touch, as though he were afraid the flower would crumble at his fingertips.
It was a good thing Nix was being this careful- the petal gave easily under his touch, bending down with it. Even with that little touch, the soul inside was jostled some from the snug position it was in.
Nix pulled his hand away, freezing up a bit in fear. "D-Did I break it?" He asked Derlik nervously, keeping his hands close to his chest now.
