Okay how about… are smartphones wrecking this generation?!?! Studies have actually shown that there are ZERO exceptions to the rise in social media use along with the rise in anxiety and depression.

They're like cigarettes, people think they make you look cool, but really, all they do is give you cancer and make you stupid! Actually, cigarettes are BETTER because at least they relieve stress for a time, instead of causing it!

Ugh. I hate it when people say that social media causes anxiety and depression. I have both and let me tell you, it is not the cause. It's not even possible. Anxiety and depression are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, not by technology. My THERAPIST even says so. I will fight anyone that says it does to the death.

@Masterkey

Well, chemical imbalances in the brain is the scientific explanation, but how did the imbalance occur? A lot of the time mental problems will manifest themselves physically, and vice versa. But yeah, lots of the times the imbalance will just happen and it's not anyone's or anything's fault. But how is it not possible that too much social media use could help worsen it? The statistics are pretty clear that when social media use rises, so does anxiety and depression. They aren't really sure why, but they do know the correlation is there.

Not trying to bash you or anything, and I believe your therapist and you.

Lydia

It can worsen it, yes, but people are saying that it is the cause of it. The imbalances occur at birth. They manifest near when or after you hit puberty. It's not anyone's fault, it's just the way you are.

@Masterkey

True, true. But not everyone with anxiety and depression have the imbalance since birth, sometimes it comes through trauma or other things. Maybe that's why some scientists are encouraging everyone, not just people born with the imbalance, to be on social media less.

@Masterkey

Oh okay, that makes sense. So labeling "depression" from trauma or just maybe something bad happening to you (or as some say, too much social media use :P), as depression would not be accurate?
