So, I'm trying to write a book and the genre definitely has some elements too old for YA but the style is still accessible as YA. Is anyone else in the same boat, or am I shouting into the void alone? I need another 20 something to commiserate with or at least someone who is writing for one.
NA! You're writing a New Adult book, that's at least what it sounds like to me
You don’t happen to live in WA, do you LB? Random but an odd coincidence of your name to a people group I know of.
Also I’m 20 so yeah I’ll commiserate. But have you seen all the stuff that gets into YA? I think you’ll be fine. What is it that you’re worried about?
Thanks so much y'all! @Ice-Ice-Baby, I've never heard that genre name before.
@Althalosian-bears-myrrh-from-the-East I don't but I've been and loved it there. I'm actually about to move to South Korea from Missouri in like a month (for my job). I actually haven't had time to read to much YA recently (I was too busy reading Plato (ick), De Tocqueville, and other Poli Sci for the past four years…)
But lets just say I studied in Germany for a summer and saw a lot (especially Dachau). I also learned a lot about the Japanese medical experiments in WWII. So it does get dark, I still haven't been able get through actually writing it. There is also the human connection… if you know what I mean. Also for your addition to my introduction, if you need any political help, lmk.
It's not one that's used a lot because it tends to just get shoved into YA, but NA stuff is usually in-between YA and Adult. SJM's stuff (especially ACOTAR or her new one) is a good example of NA
That makes so much sense! I thought KOA was a little graphic, but I haven’t read ACOTAR yet. Bc, I would not like want to be responsible for ruining some 13 year-old’s mind.
Exactly! The issue is, a lot of New Adult stuff gets shoved into either YA or Adult, and most libraries don't/won't recognize it as a separate group
Thanks so much y'all! @Ice-Ice-Baby, I've never heard that genre name before.

Bruh you’ve been around. Also I lowkey hated DeTocqueville so. Good for you.
@Althalosian-bears-myrrh-from-the-East 😅 I didn’t even realize that list is all geography! … And noooo, I love him!
Congrats it was a bit of a slough for me.
Okay, long shot, since this thread has been dead for a while and IDK if y'all know about medical stuff… but!
One of my characters is attacked from behind by someone who is trying to slit her throat. She manages to escape him by falling into the river. So, for story purposes, her throat has to be cut in some way and she has to live. How can I achieve this? Would the water pressure stop the blood loss from being too much? How long would she be able to stay alive, if she didn't down first? How deep could the cut before it's impossible for her to survive?
Thanks!
Not deep enough to cut her throat. Deepest on one side but got rapidly shallower bc she fell right before the dude tried to slit.
