Another world lies parallel to our own, its magic contained in eight powerful deities. When one deity escapes into 1920s Cambridge, the kingdom's best wizard, Brent Ashlight, is sent to track them down - only the best wizard turns out to be the most easily distracted. It only takes meeting Roger, a seemingly ordinary Classics student, to make Brent completely forget about his quest...or at least put it off for a while.

Back in the magical realm, Ember Crow, another young wizard, is tired of waiting for Brent to come back. Desperate for a chance to prove herself and determined to succeed where others have failed, she follows him to Cambridge to track him and the rogue deity down.

Eight deities act as vessel's for the world's natural magic, each of them guarding a specific type of power. However, no matter how powerful they may be, that amount of pure magic is too much to be carried by one entity. So the deities must regularly donate a portion of their powers to the young people of the world - this is called the Blessing. A person who receives a Blessing is able to, with training, use some parts of the magic the deity which blessed them guards.
